Curtains for Richo?

Total Tiger said:
Just posted on another thread but Hardwick's press conf left me thinking that Richo is gone

Yeah right... when Hardwick still rates Richo in the top 3 players on our list!

Says he will sit down with the medical staff and Richo before making a decision on his future. If Richo is fit and motivated (is the Pope a Catholic?) = another year IMO.

No doubt Richo and Cousins should go on next year, as long as Hardwick has a medical assessment he can trust!

Hope he has his own Medical Team as well ;D

Gary March just said on SEN that Hardwick rates Richo as the best 1 or 2 players on our list....& when Hawthorn played Richmond that Richo was the first one they looked at for game tactics..... Also said Harwick will sit down with the medical team in reviewing Richo..... I think it's pretty safe to say that if the medical team give the thumbs up then he'll play next year.....
He also said that Cuz still had upside & Hardwick was impressed with him....

Should see these 2 play next year, one feels.....
They are also very important for marketing, sponsorship etc.....
Plenty to cut before them....

hmm this is where i hope things change at richmond.
personally i dont believe hardwick should have the say in who stays and who goes. a say yes but the sole judge no.

we have had a review the process of identifying who stays who gets recruited player types etc should be down to list manager recruiting manager head of football as a group. those processes should be well into place by now or what good was the review.

damien hardwick is not going to come in and be the messiah he should be coming in and being the glue to a team all on the same page with a common goal and the process in place to achieve that goal. anything less and we will endure more misery.

we now have a coach hes just a cog in the wheel. to me it is more important to find those people who can run and be part of a successful footy dept.

if hardwickk goes down the wrong path or diverges from the process the footy dept should be capable of pulling him back into line.

Well said Claw, spot on.

Didnt hear the interview, but Geez leysy wishes March would stop commenting on our players & the likelyhood fo them staying on.

Its not your domain to make any comment no matter how innocent you believe your words are Gary.

If he's to play on (I still think he should retire), hopefully Rawlings recent mantra towards Richo playing a more oriented team game will be followed up by Hardwick. After seeing the presser today and his focus on team I expect it will be.

I don't for a second doubt Richo's passion but for all the bleating here about Matthew helping other kids develop, leadership etc., poor defensive application is and always has been a glaring weakness in his game.
It's a major issue in Richmond's culture in general and many of our senior players are the worst offenders, Richo is not excused.

It's not good enough for our best players to just get interested in the game when the football's near them, they have to learn to run hard both ways and help their team mates out as required. Personally I reckon the chances of Richo rectifying that aspect at this point of his career is pretty low.
However if indeed he is passed fit there is no doubt he's still one of our best players and deserves his spot on the list next season.
I'd just hate to see him play on next year for half a dozen games and be a shadow of his former self whilst we are getting pantsed again (which I fully expect).
Sometimes footballers need to know when their time is up. I sense that time is now but if he goes on I'll cheer him again in '10.

Totally agree, but there is no doubt Coachs get a say in list management. Just shouldn't be the final say. I've said in plenty of earlier posts as much and I also have a gut feel Cameron wants Cousins and Richo there next year. So it is the list management's decision.

However there is no doubt Hardwick's vision for the team will have a huge impact on list management, just like Clarkson's did on Hawthorn.

March brought Hardwick in because he fit Gale and Cameron's philosophies/manner. Keep that in mind.

As long as his body is right, Richo isn't going anywhere. And I'm sure both the player and the coach think that.

Oldest player in the comp in a team that's currently in a rebuilding period while trying to develop young key talls.... if he has full authority to do what he wants, Richo is gone. I just hope the ferals don't lash out on Dimma if it occurs because IMO it's the right decision.

Disagree, I think only Richo and Cuz will be there in 2010 and possibly 2011, because both of them are far superior players to anyone else over 30 at Richmond. Both are probably still in the top 5 players at Richmond when you include the few young players that are good.

You cannot by any stretch just get rid of all your experienced players let alone the two over 30's who are consistently up there in the best category. Granted Richo had a nasty injury, but he's had almost a year off, now he's got the pre season to rest up and then build up for 2010. Richo is still needed, he is a dangerous player and even he played only half a quarter for 4 quarters, the opposition will have to cover him accordingly because of the damage he can do. Riewoldt needs Richo, so too Morton and anyone else up forward who is young, his competitive example on the field is just too much to waste right now when we start the rebuilding process.

That's the kind of rationalization that seen our club in darkness for the last 29 years. Richo stays if Richo wants to say? Are you kidding me......the club will decide the fate not the individual. Sentiment has no place in football and not being ruthless will kill this club off for good.

How has that been the case in the last 29 years? We've had no champions, the simple fact of the matter that has kept us in the wilderness is poor recruiting and this has nothing to do with Richo leaving or staying. Topping up with mediocre players and trading drat picks are to blame for 80% of our problems.

Kill this club off for good? Bit over the top I reckon seeings as we just got a record amount of members and about to post a massive profit.

Bullcr@ap.... if james hird wanted 2 play on would the bombers have stopped him.. NO! footy clubs are all about respect and earning that respect. Richo has earned our respect... its that kinda respect that every1 of our players on the list should be striving for.... thats a successful culture! not the crap we treated matty knights and co with.

Its the crap on our list that we retain in hope of a miracle that holds us back!

That's exactly it mate...great post

in world sport only champions in champion teams - jordan................have the elite status that earns them the right to call their own day. Seriously (for richo), not won a flag, and really not in the top ten players of the last decade in AFL. Emotion is running very high here!!

So I guess Tony Lockett and Gary Ablet aren't champions either?......give us a break. It takes 22 players to win a premiership and Richo can only cover for 4 or 5 players which he's been doing for his whole carer. Wayne Carey "Matthew Richardson is a Champion with a capital C"

If his body's sound let him play.

Plenty of boy's that have been tried & failed need to culled before the Big Fella.

I think Cousins is the perfect player to keep on board during a rebuild.

A young team needs a leader, someone they can all look up to and aspire too. Cousins has the best work ethic I have ever witnessed from a Tiger player - ever.

Not only that, but he's won a premiership and a brownlow medal, so can lead by example. He can also fill a need on the field, without affecting the development of any other players.

I can't say the same about Richo as much as I love him.

Totally agree. Our side has numerous passengers at any given time...But Cousins is not one of them. Must keep him for at least another season.
Richo...inclined to keep him on because he is big and hard to match up on. Play him on a wing/flank and let Jack/Post/whoever do their thing as key forwards. Get him to 300 games and give him the send off that Knighter never got.

He also quoted John Kennedy when asked about Richo that there was no room for sentiment in football.

I agree, he's not

He's bigger and better than both of them

Rubbish of course...but in terms of his continuing whatever is best for the club

I love Richo but I have noticed him slowing down considerably in the last year and a half. I think he would be a terrific presence in the forward line, although he should be played in the square. This would leave Riewoldt free to play half forward.

Yes definatley slowed down playing on the wing and polling 22 Brownlow votes ;D
