Curtains for Richo?

Now you're speculating Dr Mel.

Well when in Rome ;)

Almost EVERY post pro Richo being forcibly retired has "old" "age" "35" etc .... I am not wrong that this is simply looking at his age. Whether others are prepared to admit it or not.

it wont be about age, it will be about ability to contribute. On that front he ( Richo ) still cuts it. On any given week he would get the best defender from any of the other 15 clubs. On that measurement alone he would be an asset to take the pressure off other fwds or mids.

If you can't correlate his tendonitis injuries with age, I can't help you mel.

Age should be a factor. How many players in recent history have played at 35 years old and not have to be nurtured through games and training and remained injury free? I dont think its a matter of 'simply' looking at his age. There are a number of other ramifications at that age.

No,he'll get another year

Craig Bradley seemedto do alright for an old bloke. Alistair lynch too. Age should not be a factor, his ability to contribute on the field and to help his teammates develop should be the key.

I think Richo is in the "Untouchable" category. Sacking him would certainly be a strong statement from Coach Hardwick, but my gut says that Richo will play next year unless he decides not to or the medicos decide he can't. Other pro Richo posts are on the money - he gets the best defender, he kicks 40+ goals a year, from a wing now, he takes 15 marks a game (4 contested).

I will be very disappointed if we get rid of him to give his spot to a new recruit. There's quite a few in the guillotine queue before Richo!!!!

there would have to be at least 6-7 duds you would give the kyber to before Richo, you don,t get rid of guns just because they are 35. It also depends on there capabillity to hold there place in the team, and if you would put Simmonds Hueghs or mc muffin in the team before him you would have to be kidding yourself. Richo even at 35 is still in our best 22 even if he was on one leg he is a champ and deserves to go out on his terms i dont care who the coach is ,this bloke held our club together when it was all falling apart by his loyalty and honesty we owe him more than to go out by the media street that some are forced to go out by , i would love to go and see his last game ,he deserves it and so do we :clap :clap

Why do people want to retire Matty? Because he's considered 'old'.

Line up all the players on our senior list and decide who should be delisted, based on their ability to contribute to the team next season. Does Matty fall into the top 15, top 20 of the group of players who should be delisted? No.

Simple fact is, Matty deserves to go around again, and if Hardwick wants to be known as the guy who cost a team half it's members ... That's precisely what will happen if Matty is forcibly retired, and other outright SPUDS kept on the list.

& let's cut the "Oh but he will hinder our forwards development" - If these sh!t trucks (Sarge, Clever etc) were any good ... They'd still be kicking goals whether Matty is out there ... on the wing ... or not.

If someone like McMahon is kept ahead of Richo because Hardwick wants to join the "Let's cull the old fellas simply because they are old" brigade ... FMD

Great Post.....seems i'm in the minority here of keeping Richo. If McMahon is on the list next year and Richo isn't due to being forced into retirement, I'm pretty sure RFC can stick their membership renewal forms as I wouldn't even open them. I'm an 18 year straight member and would turn my back on the club if these sorts are kept on the list. If Richo and Hardwick come to a mutual decision while hacks like McMahon, Hughes and co are culled then so be it that's fine.

Of the elder statesmen Richo & Cuz will survive

That's it

Apart from anything having them on the list will solve our TPP problem

Players older than 35 during the season, last 10 years:

Year Player           Max Age Ma
--------------------------------
2008 Harvey, Robert   37y 30d 24
2007 Buckley, Nathan  35y 57d  5
2007 Harvey, Robert   36y 11d 19
2006 Harvey, Robert   35y 18d 23
2004 Lynch, Alastair  36y 98d 13
2004 Smart, Nigel     35y 30d  6
2003 Lynch, Alastair  35y100d 22
2002 Liberatore, Tony 36y167d 16
2002 Lockett, Tony    36y 98d  3
2002 Bradley, Craig   38y291d 19
2002 Blakey, John     36y 46d 13
2002 Salmon, Paul     37y236d 15
2001 Blakey, John     35y 40d 22
2001 Bradley, Craig   37y327d 23
2001 Liberatore, Tony 35y203d 17
2000 Bradley, Craig   36y308d 21
2000 Salmon, Paul     35y211d 24

Average of 17 games each, brought down slightly by Lockett who was optimistically returning after three years. There's enough success stories there not to write Richo off on the score of age alone.

All depends on Dimma's game plans.

I doubt Richo will be kicked out quick. I'd say just 1 more year of Richo and Cuz should be enough to help the younger brigade considering we won't make the finals next season.

36. His last game was in 1997, 12 years ago now. Two things, the game has changed alot since then, its much much quicker and pressured now. Also Richo has had his fair share of injuries and is recoveriung slower from these. This year he missed most of the season from what was an initial hamstring injury.

Game is becoming a younger players game making it harder and harder for older players to continue on.

Good stats and probably proves the point that its becoming a younger man's game and harder for older players to get up and play after 35. In that list in the last 5 years there have only been 2 players who have played over 35, Harvey and Buckley and Buckley only managed 5 games. Harvey is a freak, have always said that. Other great players who couldn't continue on due to recurring injuries include Hird and Crawford. Its just not that easy anymore.

Richo will be on that list next year if he wants to play on I am sure. The question is how many games will there be beside his name in 2010.

Oldest player in the comp in a team that's currently in a rebuilding period while trying to develop young key talls.... if he has full authority to do what he wants, Richo is gone. I just hope the ferals don't lash out on Dimma if it occurs because IMO it's the right decision.

well i reckon the only reason richo would be kept on is for fear of a supporter/member backlash. it's time things changed imo.
