Re: Cricket

Aussies finish up on 254 for 6. And if you listen to the so called expert SA commentators SA should win in a canter.... ::) ::) ::) Should be interesting to see but im off to bed.

Re: Cricket

Fair effort to pile on as many runs as we did in the late stages by the sound of things, Tuby. I've got my fingers crossed...Anywhere I can go to keep up to date with scores?

Re: Cricket

First Test, Nagpur
England 393 and 297/3 dec.
India 323 and 260/6 (Jaffer 100, Dravid 71; Harmison 2/48, Flintoff 2/79)
Match drawn
Man of the Match: MJ Hoggard

After the early breakthrough England were frustrated for more than two sessions by Jaffer and Dhoni. At the time of Dravid's dismissal, India still needed 200 to win off 25 overs... and they decided to go for it. Pathan was promoted in the order and clubbed 35 off 25 balls and Tendulkar smashed 28 not out off 19. Ultimately it was the reintroduction of Harmison, who gave Pathan less to hit with his steepling bounce and then claimed the wickets of Dhoni and Harbhajan, which put an end to the uprising. Laxman walked out to bat with India needing 108 off 70 balls, but with his side now six down took the light when it was immediately offered.

Anything but a dull draw, and combat resumes in Mohali on Thursday.

Re: Cricket

In Port Elizabeth the South Africans, chasing 255 to win, are 175/5 after 41 overs. They need 80 off 54 balls, with de Villiers and Pollock well set in an as yet unbroken 107-run partnership.

Re: Cricket

Australia are back in the hunt.

Pollock and de Villiers were claimed in quick succession by Watson and Clarke respectively, and there went the South Africans' chances.

South Africa all out for 230 after 47.2 overs, giving Australia a 24-run victory.

It was nice to hear them change their tune. Barry Richards is the only commentator with anything remotely resembling balance.

Re: Cricket

Good performance by Aussies but problems remain.Kattich & Martyn bat for themselves & are too slow. They must go so the new players have time to settle in for the World Cup.Hussey should bat 4 & not be wasted where he is.We still need to find another quick bowler.I noticed Hogg only bowled 2 overs for 12.Does anyone know the story there?

Yes ToO....... and he knows what he is talking about.

After all these years Tony Greig still makes an absolute goose of himself  :blah :blah :blah

Yes MB, like Sam Newman does on the Footy Show....... the resident village idiot role  :hihi

It makes the "star" performer look a lot smarter than he actually is.  Like Eddie  ;D

Maybe that's a bit harsh and it is the "2nd banana" role like Bert used to play to Kennedy and then Lane. Bill "Phantom" Lawry is the most entertaining caller for mine, and Tony plays the "2nd banana" role well to him.

In summary, Greig should only ever get a gig working in tandem with Bill. So put Bill on the next bloody plane to South Africa please Foxtel(or whoever is responsible)

Re: Cricket

You're too kind in my eyes Hayfever. Greig and Lawry are both past it IMO. Cliche ridden drivel, talking about past times that few veiwers remember.
Continue with the new blood. Slater was a breath of fresh air this past summer. Nine's commentary team needs an overhaul big time.

I was being very kind to Tony Greig . Much kinder than when he said the Saffas were cruising to a 3-0 whitewash when they were about "one for fotty" last night........ what a wanker! It helps when we win and prove him wrong of course ;D

As far as Bill goes though mate it is a different story. He is the only oldie who still has his faculties left and makes the call exciting. Richie, Chappelli and Tony ought to be pensioned off and Tubby is dull, colourless and boring. Ian Healey is the only newbie I have much time for. Slater has potential but is still very wet behind the ears.

Re: Cricket

No doubting Bill's enthusiasm(has there ever been) but there's only so many times you can hear "he's hit that clean as a whistle" or "he's got 'im, Yes! What a classic catch." :p

I agree about the other commentators except Benaud. He's all class and still provides insight after all these years. Tubby's boring. O'Donnell's worse & Chappell is a corpse. Healy and Nicolas are Ok.

Personally I prefer insightful commentary, than just being told what I am seeing. Particularly with a game like cricket. That's why they need to keep blooding new talent. Sure Slater's a bit as you say wet behind the ears but he's still close to the game and has a better understanding of the current goings on than the other pensioners in the box.

Warne will be there soon enough, Gilchrist as well I'd say. Hopefully they'll inject a few other recent retirees with a bit of flair(not Steve Waugh). Something's got to hold the spectators interest because this summer the cricket on Nine was as disinteresting as it has been for years.

Re: Cricket

Damien Fleming
Mark Waugh

The longer they persist with this hack the less chance the Aussies have of winning the world cup.Martyn should be pensioned off also.

NEWSFLASH - somthing different from me ............

KATICH IS A DUD and he is in no way shape or form a one day player.

The guy is playing for his spot in the side not the team cause and is a nothing player, and as for Martyn he has to go to.

These two duds went a long way to losing the Aussies the ASHES, with their lack of impact in the middle order, and are both playing selfish cricket after the selectors made the mistake of telling them to make runs or forget the world cup.

I cannot stomach Katich and i dont recall in recent times a more disliked cricketer in the AUssie side.

Heres some names for the future, Cosgrove, BIrt, Jaques, North, Rogers- forget the other two duds FFS.

While i am at it why isnt Griffith from Tazzie getting a look in ahead of Johnson, and the other superdud Stuart Clark, even Lewis as he is the highest wicket taking bowler in Oz this season by quite a margin i believe.

Even Dizzy has been back in very good form and his experience is invaluable, along with Taits raw speed and unpredictability.

The Australian selectors are doing a Richmond and playing proven duds in the feint hope that they can manage to cling to success or attain success, thus stifling the development of young talent and the continued success of Aussie cricket.

Tis gonna backfire for mine and if Martyn and Katich, Stuart Clark, and the likes are picked for the WC then Australia will not win.

Re: Cricket

Lehmann has potential based on the coverage he did recently. Understands the game and has a good sense of humour.

I like Mark Waugh's opinions and style....... astute, laid back and does not take himself too seriously(like some). He is not backward in giving raps to young players from other states.

Fleming is good too.

Julian...... OK as host but otherwise limited.

Berry....... NO THANKS.
Hogg........ NO NO.
Henry...... HELL NO.

Gilchrist worries me lately. Seems too naive, both on the Cricket Show and as acting captain. After playing with Steve Waugh for years you would think he'd learn to play his cards closer to his chest. Ponting is a lot smarter these days after doing it tough in England.
