Na, that's not the truth. Boon, Marsh, Khawaja, none of these were specialist openers - until they were.
They didn't make the change at 34 though?

Smith is an eye player, he's on the decline. We shouldn't be asking him to take on a more difficult task. No doubt he would have aksed for the challenge but that's why you have selectors.

Smith is nowhere near the player he was but saying it is to some like shooting Bambi, but he just isn’t. He is probably still be in our best 11 but he is a decent test batsman atm and no more.
Our batting is really fragile. Khawaja is a fine player but 37, Labuschagne has had a very ordinary summer, Green has consistently struggled at test level, Head and Marsh are boom or bust.

We didn't ask him, it was his idea.

There's talk it might be the challenge keeping him in the game. And there's no one else jumping out.

I see the SACA has released its all-time best team:

Clem Hill
Greg Blewett
Sir Donald Bradman
Ian Chappell
Greg Chappell
Darren Lehmann
Sir Garfield Sobers
Barry Jarman
Clarrie Grimmett
Jason Gillespie
Rodney Hogg
Geff Noblet

Surprised they didn't put Joel Garner in there.

David Hookes stiff to miss out to a couple of imports (Bradman and Sobers - also Grimmett was a Kiwi, via Sydney and Melbourne, and Hogg was a Victorian). And Sobers at 7 - ha!

Be interesting to see other states - NSW would be bloody tough.

I'll have a go:

WA:

Simon Katich
Justin Langer
Mike Hussey
Damien Martyn
Kim Hughes
Tom Moody
Rod Marsh
Dennis Lillee
Stuart MacGill
Terry Alderman
Bruce Reid

Edited to include the blokes Leysy reminded me of, and to replace Gilchrist with Marsh and Yardley with MacGill because I've decided it's State of Origin.

Hussey?

Katich and Chris Rogers have claims ahead of Wood/Marsh.

Jo Angel was a colossus at state level, but didnt quite crack international.

I knew I was forgetting someone!

You're not picking Jo Angle over Lillee, Alderman or Reid!

That's what I mean, selectors are there to make decisions in the best interests of the team right now and in the future. What Smith wants is irrelevant. You could look on it as a slightly desperate move by a bloke on the decline.

Personally think Bancroft has the local form and should have been offered the opportunity.

Head showing again he's our most important batsman. Game changer.

Hugh Trumble, Ian Redpath, Bill Woodfull, Brad Hodge, Graham Yallop all stiff.

I've gone from a Head hater to lover.

Bancroft has scored plenty in Shield cricket but when you add in Australia A type games, Renshaw's been better and is a better player in my O.

Native South Australia:

Clem Hill
Greg Blewett
Ian Chappell
Greg Chappell
Darren Lehmann
Travis Head
Barry Jarman
Clarrie Grimmett
Jason Gillespie
Tim May
Rodney Hogg

They can have Hogg, and Grimmett is a moral South Austrlian, never playing for NSW and only three times for Victoria.
