Cricket

IMO, Smith and Warner should never have been selected to play Test Cricket again.

I wonder if good all Dave, while he was patronised and lionised yesterday, while history was glossed over if not seemingly rewritten, even gave Bancroft a thought?

Remember him Dave? The kid whose career you destroyed? The kid who, while you sanctimoniously touched Phil Hughes' memorial plaque while going out to bat in full view of the cameras (of course), sat a million miles away bearing the only real punishment to come out of the sordid affair. He will never play Test Cricket again.
Yep, Smith and Warner got 12 months, Bancroft supposedly copped 9 months, but after dominating shield cricket for the last two summers it would appear that he's been banned for life.

No mention of Fergus O'Neil, took 10 wickets in his last shield game, should come into consideration if he keeps performing as he has in his young career.

I'd have him in my list ahead of Wyllie, with all due respect, even though one is a bowler and one is a batsmen.

A 10WM is pretty damn impressive for as young bowler. All in all I'd rate it much higher than a 100 from a young batsmen.

Yeah, but like Cornes, Warner will be the poor man version of the evil villain. I prefer the more witty, sophisticated and generally knowledgeable versions, like Stuart Broad.
Who knows? He might be another useless gibbering numpty in the media, or he might have some honest and open opinions on the game. Think I'd rather listen to Warner's opinions than Howie's.

It was significantly worse because of your second point. And it directly involved an Australian Captain. It was blatant cheating that went directly against the tenets of the game.
So how much worse was it than a Pommie captain using dirt to sand the ball, got a couple of weeks from memory, it was also Smudge who was Captain at the time not Warner. So more on him than Warner. Or perhaps the whole Pommie side dribbling sticky mint sauce down one side of the ball for an entire series? Or what about the bloke who got caught using a bottle cap to scrape one side of the ball? Then there's always the match fixers within the game, got me a feeling there was a wealthy Jaapie captain involved in making a bit of extra on the side among others which also included a couple of super high profile Ozzies that copped not much more than a whitewash after they got found out.

Done the crime n done the time, plenty have done as bad if not worse n copped insignificant penalties by comparison. There's bugger all puritans in sport, business or life. Pretty much everyone pushes the boundaries n fudges *smile* when they think they can get away with it, get caught n cop your whack then move on.

So Bancroft was stupid enough to be led by the nose because he was some sort of innocent ten year old. Stupid bloke had a fairly large input into his own suspension n obviously by his own actions didn't have much value for the so called historical integrity of the sport. Maybe we'll never know if he had the capacity to step up to the pressure at international level and become a regular player. We do know however that both Smudge and Warner had that level of talent even if they were *smile* wits during that Sth African tour, and again after.

Sadly happens on a regular basis that some players spend their entire careers on the fringes of the test squad simply because the incumbents do enough to hold onto their spot in the senior side. Been happening for generations, especially when the test side is reasonably successful that the hopefuls can't get into the team no matter how well they perform at the lower level.
Could say exactly the same thing about footy sides.

Bancroft played test cricket after his sandpapergate suspension. He played the first two tests of the 2019 Ashes, scoring 8, 7, 13, 16.

I'd say using sandpaper is more egregious. Plus there's no doubt players from other sides got off far too lightly.

There's no incumbent though.

True, one of the incumbents has left the building and the other one probably won't be that far behind so Oz cricket will be needing to find two openers in a relatively short period of time.
Just had a quick google of Bancroft's numbers at test level and apart from one knock of 82 in 18 innings there's not a lot else to write home about. Perhaps there's more than one reason H.O. hasn't bothered to go back to Bancroft despite his numbers at Shield level.
Gun player at VFL level, list clogger at AFL level.

Yep, robbing a bank is way nastier than robbing a milk bar, just ask the poor bastard behind the counter who gets a machete waved under his nose while his missus n kids are out back of the shop how nasty them bank robbers are.

Yep. H.O. always spends way more time diminishing the offence and protecting the image of the game while attacking the offenders with wet lettuce leaves.
Reckon Oz cricket at least got the punishment fairly right, publicly shamed the perpetrators, suspended them for a lengthy period, then allowed them the opportunity to rebuild their careers after the punishment instead of destroying them completely.

Good to Hamish McKenzie get another game for the Scorchers, he's a left arm wrist spinner (Chinaman) he's a good prospect.

Is that still appropriate these days? Haven't seen to many Chinese cricketers over the years.

Green will come into the team and either he or Smith will open. The three specialist opener candidates are underwhelming.
