Gilchrist's poor form continued in NZ ...Is he another suffering from burnout ? Should he consider (or be 'tapped' by selectors) standing down from ODIs to revive/prolong test career ? Rather than Haddin (re ODIs) reckon Crosswaite & Hartley ,both good young keepers, should come into reckoning. M Hussey has also kept for WA but may be a case of  'if it ain't broke....' rather than thrust a further burden on him.

Jacques (NSW) continues to hammer at the selection door, with a ton v Vics followed by centuries both days last weekend in club / intrastate matches. Cosgrove (SA) + Bailey (TAS) have also impressed lately as has L Mash (Vic) ...What's his background ? Late bloomer just sprung up from 'nowhere'.Certainly been consistent.

If only the young bowling stocks were even half as bountiful as the batting reservoir.Wise has been impressive this year but seems selectors more keen on Johnson from Qld on the promise of 'potential'.Thought Lewis did well in NZ & Bracken ok.Still puzzled S Clark gets a game for NSW,let alone the national side.Kaspar,Bichel + Gillespie deserve to be re-tread ahead of him,if we're going down that path...

Aware (c) look good on one's CV but think it also affecting C White's bowling in that he's not using himself enough.May be better for him to give the Vic (c) to someone else at  season's end & concentrate on his bowling if he wants to crack & establish himself in international ranks.

I worry about Gilchrist too. He's getting to an age (or maybe got to it) where players lose their "eye" and for such an instinctive player as him that is a big problem.

Re: Cricket

Being tests specialists has revitalised Warnie and Langer two of our best performers in Test arena not too mention the rest having helped re ignite Matt the Bat.
Maybe Gilly should concentrate on the Tests and prolong his shelf life as well.
Haddin could replace him in one dayers as he is a good bat and a good keeper obviously not as damaging with the stick as Gilly but Gilly way to important to the test side for the near future.
As an international cricketer i would much rather be a test specialist than a pyjama cricketer.

Re: Cricket

Gilchrist appears to struggle being away from his family now & probably knows when he is going to call it quits. My tip is the world cup will see him out of both forms of cricket.

Re: Cricket

Great win by the Kiwis but as some say put it into perspective. They were batting against Australia C team - Gillespe would of been opening if they had of been serious.

Agree world cup will see out Gilly and maybe even McGrath.
I think Kasper and Bichel are gone, admittely did not see last two one dayers but thought Clark was tight in the first similar to McGrath.
White needs to work harder on his bowling to become bowling all rounder not batting, still think he will make it only 22 and leg spinners blossom at 30, Warne was just a freak before he was 30 and still is.
Mash is only 24 I think and captain of his district side, from little I have seen he is compact like Hodge and posting numbers like Hodge did in his first year.

Re: Cricket

England crashed to a 165-run defeat in Karachi after unsurprisingly struggling to chase Pakistan's mammoth 353/6. Kamran Akmal made 109 as the home side took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Meanwhile CricInfo has posted the Australian side who will take on South Africa in the visitors' first ever Test in Perth:

Hayden
Langer
Ponting (c)
Hodge
Hussey
Symonds
Gilchrist (wk)
Warne
Lee
Bracken
McGrath

South Africa's probable side:
Smith (c)
de Villiers
Prince
Rudolph
Gibbs
Kemp
Boucher (wk)
Pollock
Langeveldt
Nel
Ntini

Re: Cricket

Interesting test this one with Kallis unlikely to play will make life easier for the Aussies.Aust should win but it may be a bit closer than some think.

Re: Cricket

I'm hoping the S Africans can give us a bit of a run mb

Do love a Perth Test on a nice bouncy WACA >:D

After the disappointment of the Windies series heres hoping this series will be a bit closer.

Re: Cricket

Aussie's off to bad start 1/1 with Hayden caught skying a pull shot.Appears to be a bit in the wicket so could be testing session.Ponting changing helmet after being struck by a short ball.

Re: Cricket

Shocking start. Jeez that whack in the head was hard & fast. Must be pretty frightening when that happens.

Re: Cricket

Aussies starting to cruise already now 1/77 & look headed for a big 1st innings total.Ponting in good form & the 1st change bowlers for South Africa look pretty ordinary.

Re: Cricket

Hodge dropped by Boucher. Next over beautiful straight drive. C'mon Brad, do us Vics proud and go on and make a big score.

Re: Cricket

Australia 258
South Africa 38/0
Stumps, day one

Crucial first session tomorrow. South Africa will want a fair lead because they won't want to be chasing too many in the fourth innings if the pitch deteriorates like many have predicted.

Re: Cricket

Just got home & can't believe the score. When I left Langer & Ponting were cruising.Ordinary shots from Hayden,Langer & Symonds.Symonds needs runs in the next test or his test career is as good as over.Gilchrist is a worry but hopefully a big innings will get him back on track.Positive start by South Africa in their 1st innings.
