Re: Cricket

The follow on was the right decision. Manage the bowlers for a series where tests follow in quick succession, let the pitch deteriorate more and grind the poms into the dirt.

I can't see much wrong with that.

As for the pitch being a disgrace I offer the following.

Australia Second Innings; 1-177 Langer 87 no Ponting 48 no.

It's a shocker isn't it? Good to see the Pommy whingeing has started so early.

100% on the money.
*smile* moaning Poms.......not good enough and still looking for someone to blame.

Which such a massive lead it highlights Ponting's poor captaincy by not going for the outright.Aussies are still haunted by India game when Waugh was captain. The bowlers hardly raised a sweat in dundling the Poms out for 157.

No, right decision I reckon. ALways harder to bat last regardless of what has happened before.

Re: Cricket

The only risk will come if he bats on too long (at all?) tomorrow. Maybe let Langer get his ton but even better, declare over night.

Had we enforced the follow on there is no way the Aussies would have had to bat again.

The other risk would be bad weather.

Re: Cricket

3 votes to JL Langer for the big up yours to all those calling for your head.

Jaques can wait a little longer, Langer is the incumbant and deserves his spot.

82 and hopefully a century tomorrow will shove it up the doubters.

Well done Justin i admire your passion, spirit and mental toughness.

Re: Cricket

If the lead is only 250 or so, not enforcing the follow on is the right decision because it absolutely rules out losing. But at 400+ lead, I think mb64 is on the money. If the weather holds we'll win anyway so why not get it over with ASAP and give everybody a rest.

If the weather doesn't hold the decision will backfire big time.

Two reasons I can think of for batting again:
1. Put them in the field to tire them out.
2. Ricky wants another ton.

As for "going for the outright", sheesh ... Test matches can only be won outright.

Re: Cricket

Can see both sides of the follow-on debate but now we're having another hit, wouldn't declare overnight.Happy to bat for the first hour or so,get 700+ in front to reinforce Australia's dominance & mess with the English minds a little more.
There'll still be 155-160 overs available to knock the tourists over again to win.Should be ample but then again,it's not unheard for a side to last 5.5 seasons
to gain a draw, though it's hard to visualise on the trend of play to date.

Umpires are human but England's display thus far don't entitle them to any 'favours'.You make your own luck & they've not been in the contest..

Re: Cricket

Flintoff and Peitersen can play, Harmison is outta form and the rest are duds 8)

Losing Vaughan, Trescothick and Jones not to mention not playing on slow green wickets hasnt helped England.

Exactly....hit the nail on the head totally! :clap

And the good thing is, Warnie hasn't had to do much either so far...so he should be feeling pretty fine for the Poms 2nd innings as well as the Adelaide game.

This is Headingley 1993 all over again (where Border batted on for an hour in order to get 200 and to really put the boot in). This has been cited as a large influence on Steve Waugh developing his mantra of "mental disintegration".

Hopefully Ponting's *smile*-take is enough to galvanise England in Adelaide (five and a half sessions to survive here is too much to ask).

Re: Cricket

I'm normally in favour of enforcing the follow on, but I can see why Punter is doing this. He's giving the bowlers a rest, despite his protests to the contrary McGrath is older and he hasn't played a lot of cricket over the past 12 months. You want him fresh and firing to match his first innings efforts. The other thing is psychological. Ponting doesn't just want to beat the Poms, he wants to annihilate them. If Australia can completely smash them in this test how demoralized are they going to be when they get to Adelaide? The other great thing is that it quietens the Barmy Army down. There was all this talk about how they had these 'witty' tunes they were going to sing. Despite the fact that most of them were highly offensive to Australians and the team I'd rather hear one of those in the background than the continual monotonous, boring chant of Barmy Army. We should truck in some cicadas to drown them out.

Re: Cricket

I agree with not enforcing the follow on but Ponting may have batted too long by oging on again this morning.

Spot on 23,the test would have been over yeaterday & that would have given the side an extra day's rest before next test.

Re: Cricket

Isn't it in the players best interests financially for games to go 5 days? Not that that would enter into Riccardo's mind when he makes the calls.

Yeah rosy, bit to consider, ticket refunds for a sold out 4th day Gabba, and TV for eddie's 9 sports. Little bit at stake.
