Coronavirus

Aussies and Canada just pulled out of the Tokyo Olympics. Surely this is one competition that can be postponed to 9-12 months later.

As expatriates are returning I think a few countries will see a spike. Certainly happening where I am. ~80% of all new cases are imported.
Yes I noticed that, Taiwan who like Singapore have managed things so well, has had a bit of spike too.

All the best @antman, hope you and you girlfriend get through all these challenges.

Just watching the updates on the news and the ripples from the cruise ship that was allowed to disembark are massive. What an enormous blue that was.

Thanks Richo.

Even though I'm an argumentative soul on PRE I consider you all my brothers and sisters. We all take so much for granted in our lives, this event is changing my mindset profoundly about what is important in life and what isn't.

All the best to everyone here.

I’m curious to know how long that cruise went for the disembarked all those passengers last week in Sydney.
There must be a reason they classed it as low risk.
There may be something to learn about the dormancy of the virus from that.

I’m guessing they figured no one showed symptoms and it was a 2 week voyage or longer. So safe as houses right?

Curious.

I like the boldness of the stimulus package in terms of size, we can argue about if its going in the right places or not. It has to be done.

Just an update on my situation - I'm still in Indonesia. Was in Australia briefly last week to see family and actually got tested for COVID as I had some minor symptoms. Went to the Northern - very professional, good assessment, staff doing their best and patients very well behaved. I doubt I have it but will get the results in a few days.

Unfortunately my girlfriend here in Jakarta is quite sick (not Corona) and I couldn't leave her here, so made the tough decision to head back. Wish me luck guys. Hospitals here are full of sick people - although cases are still officially low the Doctors told me its dangerous to stay in hospitals for too long because of virus risk.

Could be a tough ride here, hope to see you all on the other side.
Good luck mate hope you get through it okay.

All the best.

I think it only went to NZ and back. Stand to be corrected but I believe at that stage NZ only had a few cases of COVID-19.

Regardless, the authorities should have been much more vigilant in testing and enforcement of isolation. An extremely bad error in judgement which should have been avoided.

Four people on board were tested and were awaiting the results, inexcusably they let everyone off the day before the results were known. All they had to do was hold everyone on board one more day:mad:

Just googled, not expecting to find much. But, 13 day cruise ex Sydney around NZ. Ships master reported no illnesses on board 8th March. Did have 158 illnesses during voyage, but no info re what they were.

Curious.

Did no one check what those illnesses were? Did the ships master hide info so he could dock?

Someone *smile* up massively that’s for certain.

I stepped off an international flight on Friday. On arrival there were no thermal cams, no thermometers, no tests. Only 3 questions and a pamphlet. Border Force, customs and duty free staff were not wearing masks. The flight was full of people coming from all around the globe. It was a little bemusing to say the least.
You were coming back to OZ arty, she'll be right. Nothing much to see here, all them weird coroner germs are over in them foreign countries, not here.

I can't believe some people are still spreading this clear misinformation.

A lot of people don't understand percentages or exponential growth. Or microbiology. Or vaccines.

Worldwide, this is killing 1 in 25 people who test positive. 1 in 25. The seasonal flu is around 1 in a thousand. Now think proportions of the people that you know.

This 'same as the flu' nonsense is why Bondi Beach happened this week. It's why more people will die. Stop. it.
The 1/25 number is based on confirmed cases. The 1/1000 number is based on estimated cases. If you take confirmed cases of normal flu it goes to something like 1/10.

Currently modelling assumes COVID-19 has an R0 of 2.2. The seasonal flu is around 1.3

There's no question this is more contagious. I can't find a credible scientific or medical site that is claiming COVID-19 is less contagious. If anyone knows of one please post the link.

Add the fact the flu has vaccines while this thing doesn't and it's obviously a completely different ball game.

Would the higher contagion rating be because there's not currently any vaccine for the coroner as compared to the seasonal flu?

No, the infectiousness of a disease is how many other people you can infect once you're infected yourself, assuming no cures/vaccines etc. Norovirus (gastro) is one of the most highly infectious diseases, with double figures infection ratio.
