Coronavirus

Do we want to have a doorbitch at each beach and a queue waiting to get on the sand?

I laughed, imagining her looking at people's thongs and going 'Im sorry, you cant come in in those, dress thongs only. haviannas and the like'

the messaging on schools Sunday night

Morrison - send your kids to school. all the health advice is its safe and kids need education

Andrews - School holidays Start Monday and don't expect to go back.

Berechickenlian - School remain one, but don't send your kids.

Im pretty confused but I feel for people who live in Albury or Wadonga

Daniel Andrews clarified this at his press conference this morning. I'm paraphrasing but he said that it was an easier decision for Victoria to make as we are the only state that was starting school holidays at the end of this week. To start holidays a few days early is not such a huge impost given the circumstances. He also said that at this stage schools would go back on 14th April as planned but obviously the situation would be monitored and could change.

He also said that at this stage the advice he has is that it is not necessary to close the Victorian borders. He cited the example of Albury/Wodonga health which is run by the Vic Govt but the main hospital is in Albury.

He's a pretty good communicator.

Well said Riddles.
He also said that they would use the time off to develop online learning for pupils.
I wouldn't be so sure that school will be re-opening again after the 'holidays'.

Hospitals are full in our area in France (Alsace)
Completely chockers.
Having a heart attack? Come back next week.
This is a problem that could have serious reperconcussion for people here. Same problem that Northern Italy is having.

I saw a GP this week to get prescription for my boy's asthma. The doc was an anxious wreck.
So yes a big thank-you to the health care workers, may they all stay safe

Bingo. Health systems are at or over full capacity.

Working from home with 2 kids and a wife is pretty stressful. Can see divorce rates climbing.

I do appreciate having a job still.

Divorce rates up. Alcoholism up. Small spike in birth rates in 9mths time but then a big drop in birth rates due to schools closing down.

In our household we've decided to relax the online/video gaming time restrictions for the kids to 24x7. It helps.

USA Yesterday.

33,546 cases (3rd behind China & Italy)
+9,339 new cases
419 deaths
+117 New deaths

In less than a week the US will surpass Italy in cases I reckon.

New Zealand, has had a spike in cases.

102 cases
50 new

As expatriates are returning I think a few countries will see a spike. Certainly happening where I am. ~80% of all new cases are imported. As long as countries are methodical in testing at the border, or enforcing quarantine, it should be ok.

I mean, you wouldn't want a 3000 person cruise ship to dock and let everyone go onshore untracked or anything, but no one is stupid enough to do that....

Yeah, catching them at the airport has kept our numbers down, until now.

Ah *smile*. ***** like this are better off knocked on the head. Or at least having their tongues tied.

PS Bolt is being a stubborn fool about this. He should be put to sleep for a while also.
Yeah, I agree. Overly emotive language doesn't help, we need logic.

I've been guilty of it, will rein it in.

Whether Morrison is doing a good job or not is almost irrelevant now, I don't envy him his job in this position. We all need to pull together. He should add Albo to the national emergency cabinet - no time for partisan politics.

you're allowed to be skeptical, no problems there, there has been some overhype on some aspects sure, but the data does not clearly show that. Not at all.
Not skepitcal, factual. The difference is clearly shown in the charts below for the infection rates by age for Australian Flu and Chinese Corona.

From the final Flu Serveilance Report for the 2019 season by the Australian Government Department of Health.

Chinese Corona Numbers to Feb 11.

China Infection rates throu Feb 11 COVID-19-1.jpg

Last year 812 recorded deaths in Australia from the flu. As the qualifications say, its likely higher. The median age of death from flu is 86 but the range starts at below 1yo. In Italy the median age of death from Corona is 82 but the range starts at 30yo. In the report above China had recorded no deaths under 10, one death under 20yo and 7 deaths in the 20-30yo bracket. In the flu season to date the USA has already recorded 84 deaths under 5yo. Flu is more infection rates and death rates are higher than Corna in under 30yo by a large margin.

Flu Deaths Australia 2019.png

Now to the real crux of the problem.

Case rates for flu are comparable to Corona. In Australia last year they peaked at around 60 per 100,000 pop per week. Italy is currently running around 70.

Australia hospitalised almost 4000 people with the flu last year, of which 6.3% were admitted to ICU. As we saw above the ICU admission rate for flu was actually higher in the under 65 bracket.

Italy has 20,000 hospitalised of which 15% are in intensive care. Given 96% of deaths are over 60 its reasonable to assume the vast majority of intensive care admissions are over 65.

This is the problem, we have to control the infection rate in the over 65yos because a high proportion will need critical care. If we don't it will put our hospital system under strain.

This is completely different to saying Corona is the pandemic of the century when the numbers already suggest that global deaths this year from Corona will be around the same as the flu.

World Seasonal Flu Deaths.png

Wash your hands
Cover your cough
Stay home if you are sick
Take care of your oldies.

Not only will this manage the Corona load in our hospitals it will reduce deaths from the flu and other communicable diseases which kill around 5 million a year.

I like the boldness of the stimulus package in terms of size, we can argue about if its going in the right places or not. It has to be done.

Just an update on my situation - I'm still in Indonesia. Was in Australia briefly last week to see family and actually got tested for COVID as I had some minor symptoms. Went to the Northern - very professional, good assessment, staff doing their best and patients very well behaved. I doubt I have it but will get the results in a few days.

Unfortunately my girlfriend here in Jakarta is quite sick (not Corona) and I couldn't leave her here, so made the tough decision to head back. Wish me luck guys. Hospitals here are full of sick people - although cases are still officially low the Doctors told me its dangerous to stay in hospitals for too long because of virus risk.

Could be a tough ride here, hope to see you all on the other side.
