Coronavirus

Coburgtiger, I agree with a lot of what you say but there are some problems.

With so much of the workforce in insecure work these days a fair number of people will not be able to stay home with their kids if they want to pay the rent. Trouble is, the alternative is to leave the kids with their grandparents.

Things are moving fast but school holidays in 2 weeks would be reasonable given the likely timing of the spread of the virus, and more likely parents already have leave sorted or at least some arrangement in place.

These things are always difficult.

How do you practice social distancing in a packed train seeing that public transport hasn't been cancelled?

was talking to mum today.

In the big depression in the 20s/30s, my grandad was the union shop steward at the Ararat railway depot.

he was a boiler maker and a bushy.

management wanted to lay off 50% of staff but pop cut a deal where they all stayed employed halftime, week about.

on Pops week off, which he loved, he tended his garden (he remains the best vegetable gardener I've ever known) and rode his Indian scout out to lands borough and shot rabbits with a sweet old Winchester .22 and came back with a sidecar full to share around the blokes on half pay.

.22 is a very underrated calibre

cool hey?

this stuff has all been done before. stay calm, help each other at every opportunity .

Thats the key EzyT.

You know, just thinking about it, how lucky we are that this thing only is a serious threat to those over 65 or have pre-existing conditions. And even then it's a low percentile.

If it was more SARS like in it's fatality we'd be really screwed.

Flying back to Melbourne for a month this week - had it booked for 6 months.

No food, no toilet paper, no soap, no footy...

Really looking forward to it.

And now with 2 weeks out of 4 in self isolation, we've decided to pull the pin.

Strange times indeed.

Company here in Indo just invoked non-essential staff working from home from Monday for 1 month.

Just waiting for them to give contractors like me the flick now. I've been exploring pipeline for other jobs in Aus and elsewhere and everything is drying up big time.

If you have a job, try not to lose it.

Take care Antman.

All the best we wish you.

Thats my fear too.

Grandparents who are involved with looking after their grand children are much more at risk if those kids are attending school everyday, then if they aren't. Even if they'll overall be seeing them less.

This will be less true in two weeks time.

If you can I think it would be a great idea/thought( if you are able too) is to help an elderly person you may know, lives in your street, vulnerable ( has no one to help them), confused by purchasing for them necessary items as panic buying doesn’t look like stopping anytime soon.

It might be hard because even I had issues buying my necessary items(1 of each ) so my idea could fall apart.

Govt did wrong by saying you need to buy enough things for 2 weeks. People panic thinking shutdown will happen within days. Look it may happen within weeks ? but they didn’t help the situation!

agreed Waito.
Here in France (Alsace state) we have been closed for 10 days. There hasnt been panic buying.
On Friday announced a complete shutdown of all nonessentials - only supermarkers chemists and the tabac to buy rollies. Govt made it clear that supply lines will keep things rolling in.
The oz govt halfarsed approach is stoking fear

Tiny Switzerland with a 61% jump in cases to 2200. And that after starting to lock down with 15 cases.
Remember Switzerland went early (late feb) to close all public events over 500....
but didnt close schools shops or offices or leisure sites (cinemas, pools) or recommend self isolating ...
So its kept spreading in work/public transport/shops even without the public gatherings.

Most european countries reacted later than the swiss but have closed down everything.
