Coronavirus

McCrann has always been an idiot, only gets a gig because he promotes the free market fundamentalist line.

The whole vaccine thing is ScoMo trying to look like he has a solution (he doesn't), and, even more so, Trump trying to deflect from his gross incompetence.

There is no guarantee we will ever get a vaccine, let alone get one any time soon.

Today''s number not so good. We can expect a bumpy ride but 2 days in a row of rises and almost double the number on Sunday is not good. Don't suppose the criticisms of the slow roadmap out of this are looking so credible now. Getting the numbers right down is the only responsible way to get to the point where we can open up again.

Here's what the graph looks like now:

COVID19 7 day ave 09092020.jpg

You can really see the lumpiness of the drop in cases on the 5 day centred average, but the fact that the 14 day trailing average is still going down is a good sign. The shorter term (5 and 7 day) averages point to a possible plateau in coming days but there is hope that if we get a few more days of lower cases we can get back to lower new infection numbers.

The averages as I calculate them on the revised DHHS figures from last night with today's announced number are:

DateNew Cases7 Day trailing ave5 Day centred Ave14 Day trailing ave
6 September 2020
40
73.57
61.20
92.07
7 September 2020
55
72.00
85.86
8 September 2020
76
70.43
81.07

Both the 7 day and 14 day averages have not risen while numbers have gone down, the 5 day average has had a couple of rises on 31 August and 2 September, but the 2 September rise was only 0.2.

Oh well, we remain in a situation of wait and see.

DS

Good to see the PRE faction of the ALP get around Sargeant Schulz.

Working OT defending, absolving and deflecting.

To be fair Dan's ratings and public support for lockdown has been pretty firm until recently. Some signs that peoples' patience is being stretched now which is fair enough.

On contact tracing Deputy CMO Nick Coatsworth said today that Victoria's current contact tracing is as good as can be expected with the number of cases we have, which aligns with Andrews previous statements about the contact tracing meeting the KPIs.

Interesting that Nick Coatsworth has said that. Makes Morrison look like a bit of an idiot yesterday coming out completely slamming the Vics contact tracing.

I'm normally more of a lib voter (centrre right) but I'm appalled at the level of politicising from the Libs and the Nationals around peoples health.

Slamming Andrews one day and then having the Feds Deputy CMO back Andrews up is a big balls up. If you are going to go down this way, make sure everyone on your side backs you up and doesn't go against you.

Stephen "Captain Underpants" Conroy has just labelled Victoria's CHO a "starstruck clown"
Zero self awareness from Conroy the clown who delivered a NBN plan with a budget that could never build it.

Very true.

btw, what conditions are you under in Indo?

Full transcript here. The current system is the key word here. Before that it wasn’t up to the required standard.

That really is a bit of nonsense though.

Essendon's form is as good as it could be with the list they have.

Relaxed here. You are supposed to wear masks when outside, some do, some don't. Mosques/churches are open again. Bigger corporates offices are still partially working from home, so only limited numbers of essential people go to the office. hearing that corporates might lockdown or at least decrease numbers at the office again soon. I'm working with one of the pharmas that distributes rapid tests and they can't keep up with demand.

You need rapid tests to fly to other provinces but apparently that will be relaxed soon. Was going to go to Bali so had a rapid test done - turns out it's antibody testing not antigen, so all it shows is that you have antibodies (so had the virus before), not if you are currently infected. I guess if it showed positive you'd get a swab to confirm viral presence.

TBH I think the government has given up on elimination and even suppression here, too many people are dependent on daily income for them to lock down again. Testing rates are low, but showing increases in cases in Bali/Java. They do have contact tracing teams here but that's an impossible job.

Cut a long story short I think it will get worse here and a lot of people will die - older, poorer people mostly. Many will be regional areas and will not be counted as they will be buried quickly as per Muslim custom. The economy will be hit but will keep going. They really need a vaccine here to get back to "normal".

Its not nonsense when Morrison was only yesterday (or maybe the day before I can't remember which day it was now) lambasting the currency contact tracing system saying it was below par and they need to learn from NSW.

If Coatsworth is saying its as good as it can be right now suggests we have improved out of sight from where we were.

Its absolutely relevant when compared to Morrison attack only a day or so ago, as that sounds more and more like politicisation than reality.

You guys really need to get over your obsession with Morrison and the fed government. It’s tedious and putting the focus on the disastrous situation here in Victoria on the wrong target.

TT you are missing the point here. Throughout this I have been relatively supportive of Morrison. The rhetoric he has given up until Sunday when the roadmap comes out was largely supportive of VIC. Since then, because he didn't get what he wanted, he claimed that the VIC's can pay the entire bill of the lockdown, he is now claiming that the contact tracing is still not upto scratch, which appears to have been disputed by the Deputy CMO (who would you believe, the medical guy or the non-medical guy).

I'm no labour voter. I've voted once for labour (my 1st time - 2001 in the UK for Tony Blair) but haven't voted for labour since. That doesn't mean you can't criticise cross party impacts when they are in the wrong. Unless of course you want Australia to become the little sister of the US.

I think it’s good to have a little friction out in public as it makes them all be a little more accountable to get their house in better order. So many politicians and the public service behind them lack the common touch as they live in a bubble and have their fortnightly wages still hitting their account. All though I’m centre right with my political thoughts I would never agree to giving politicians a free run. The better posters around here are the same, although most are left leaning from what I read. Rosy banned most of the far right posters in the past.

I would like to see this implemented. Some excellent points here. Over to our State Gov now.

why would they want to get rid of their most successfully leader in recent memory?

Also, evidence? haven't heard any of the backbenchers breaking ranks yet.
I don’t think the ALP wants to get rid of Andrews but there are those in the labor Party who don’t like him at all.
There are also some Ministers the Dan would like to get rid of that he can’t because of the power of factions and the deals that have been done.
That being said that description pretty much covers all Governments in Australia

Correct. Good time to remind people that there's never been a successful coronavirus vaccine developed.

I think you're unnecessarily pessimistic here.

It's not unusual for a trial to be halted, and it's happening out of abundance of caution.

Also, this is not a question of effectiveness. The 5 vaccines in phase 3 trials across the globe all appear to be effective, at least in lab conditions. Safety is the concern here.

This vaccine is going to be given to billions of people, so a 1 in a thousand chance of serious side effects is reason to be cautious.

I'm confident we'll get a vaccine. The question is about timing.
