Coronavirus

Apparently 532 today. *smile* ugly :(

It will be interesting to see how many tests this is against. If the number is high, but the testing numbers were also very high then may still be showing positive signs of positive test rates reducing. Numbers out very shortly.

Yikes, 532 on only 17000 test results. Not good
Sounds real bad but the 532 test results can not be based on the 17000 tests performed yesterday. There is a 2-7 day lag between test and result. I think you mentioned it before but it would be good if they could correlate the test results against when the actual tests were taken.

When Daniel Andrews mentioned it, he said it was 17000 test results, not tests taken.

Okay that is *smile* then.

I didn't see the presser but others I have seen I always thought they talked about the number of test taken in the previous 24 hour period not the number of results. Could be mistaken though.

Yeah I wasn't sure if it was tests taken or test results confirmed. Always made more sense to be test results confirmed so listened to the way it was worded and pretty certain he mentioned 17000 test results. If thats right, its an awful result. Pushes us from 1% yesterday to nearly 3% today which does suggest that there is some anomaly with the timing of the data.

Most of the issues stemming from aged cared workers going to work when sick apparently.
Government now pleading for those sick to stay home if at all unwell & to get tested.
I'll say it again a big problem is if you remove safety nets for lowly paid workers, then they're less inclined to listen as they often don't feel as if employment/sickleave etc. is secure.

Agree and thats why they are pushing the $300 payment and the $1500 payment if you are found to be positive to take away the risk around losing income.

And you suggest government employees would do it better? Can you give me many examples of public servants providing exceptional service?
Andrews was pretty clear today the problems are in private run aged cares- from what i could gather there are at most minimal cases in state run centres.

(That is not to say all present cases are related to private run aged cares- but the differences might correlate to the way staff and residents are treated in both settings.)

The $1500 has been there since the start. They've only added the $300 recently to cover the time from taking the test to getting the result back. The $1500 was initially setup way back in March / April.

Hopefully the owners of said facilities are investigated as to compliance with all their hygiene practices etc. And hopefully paying at least award wages.

Still disappointing to think someone would risk the most vulnerable lives by going to work whilst ill.

It’s not looking good.

A week or so ago this looked like a socio-economic virus in Melbourne, it was bad by postcode. Now we have struggling people who can’t afford not to work spreading it around and it’s got worse.

The next stage is whether masks will make a difference and we will know that in the next week or so. If the numbers don’t go down then we are in deep trouble imo.

Not sure about anyone else but I am flat as. Very worrying

One epidemiologist was saying that these increases were expected - we are near to the peak, hopefully. The next week's figures should tell the tale.

Don't abandon hope yet.

Meanwhile where I am in Indonesia things are looking pretty dicey, both in Java and Bali. Bali wants to open up to domestic tourism this month and international tourism next month. Recipe for disaster.

Yikes:

7 July: 102.29
8 July: 111.00
9 July: 123.57
10 July: 155.29
11 July: 170.71
12 July: 199.14
13 July: 206.29
14 July: 217.57
15 July: 232.43
16 July: 254.14
17 July: 274.14
18 July: 274.29
19 July: 287.14
20 July: 301.14
21 July: 316.00
22 July: 351.14
23 July: 363.43
24 July: 345.14
25 July: 365.14
26 July: 378.86
27 July: 415.57

Not even looking like a plateau at the moment.

Such a difficult virus given the time it takes to see impact from changes in distancing rules, masks etc. The time lag is a shocker, along with asymptomatic carriers.

Let's hope this turns around soon. Still too many people out and about for what good reason I don't know.

DS

Sutton said the modeling suggests numbers should start dropping from today, or at least should stop rising.
He hasn't been one for predictions so hopefully he is right

Must make it a criminal offence to leave your house following a positive test. Immediately.
I doubt they will because they need people to be honest with contact tracers.
If they start punishing people who admit to leaving the house, people will stop being honest after a positive test.

And people will stop taking tests. It's about winning hearts and minds, not about criminalisation.
