Coronavirus

Hopefully the owners of said facilities are investigated as to compliance with all their hygiene practices etc. And hopefully paying at least award wages.

Still disappointing to think someone would risk the most vulenrable lives whilst by going to work whilst ill.

One of the major problems in the aged care sector is staffing levels. A lot of the owners have very low staffing levels & somehow they know when the Inspectors are coming, they then get office staff & others to help "improve the numbers" thus thwarting the Inspectors.

Aged care homes are one of the worst regulated sectors in Australia. It's a disgrace.

What is surprising is it's *smile* expensive to get in and stay in one.

This is encouraging at face value (assuming it's being maintained and authorities haven't given up under the weight of positives). Seems unrealistically low in the face of the climbing numbers, but perhaps there's a backlog waiting to be categorised.

Must make it a criminal offence to leave your house following a positive test. Immediately.
One of the things that is not mentioned much as a reason is the time lag to get test results back. I am not saying we are doing a bad job because I know that the sheer volume of tests has skyrocketed and has put enormous pressure on both public and private pathology providers.
If people wait 24 hours for a result they would be more inclined to stay at home and wait for the result I suspect. If you know you are going to wait 5 days it probably stops some even getting a test.
it's a big problem but it is an issue of capacity of equipment and staff. Capacity was increased a lot over the last few months but clearly not enough, however we were competing in a worldwide market for analysers and test kits against some pretty desperate buyers overseas.

Will be a selfish act to turn up to this and will do more harm than good to the BLM cause.
Yes. I have enormous sympathy for the protestors and I have said before if it were not for the pandemic I would be marching myself.

Sometimes in life you have to look at something and make a decision on whether what you are doing, however well intentioned, will actually advance your cause. IMO marching at this time will almost certainly do more harm than good. If someone happened to catch COVID from the march that would certainly be the case.

I'm not sure if anyone has seen any of the videos going around on the internet on the face maskholes that aren't wearing them and then trying to state information back to the cops which is clear misunderstanding of the law and the constitution.

I actually feel dumber having watched them.

Yes, quoting the Bill of Rights and saying that legislation only applies to dead people, not living ones. It's straight out of the fringe US alt-right tinfoil hat brigade. The video of the cop telling that nutbag "I'm not going to debate the law with you" was awesome.

1 woman was claiming that legislation is not valid until it has gone to parliament 3 times and then gone to a referendum for the people to decide if they should have that law - WHAT??

I heard another woman in a car claiming mask wearing was only a directive, when the cop she was talking to said, actually there is legislation for it, she uttered "exactly, its legislation, not a law".

Another was claiming that she didn't consent to being arrested. I don't think you actually need to consent to being arrested, or else no-one would ever be arrested!!

I can't believe there are some people so stupid to broadcast their stupidity over the internet.

About as crazy as those organising the BLM March in Sydney who claim the court ruling that it's an illegal gathering doesn't count because "sovereignty hasn't been ceded".

Agree. They just had the leader of the BLM's protest in Sydney on the Project. These guys plus anti-maskers, anti-vaxers etc are so focused on their being a conspiracy theory as to why they can't or shouldn't do something that all sanity goes out of the window. This guy was so adamant that the BLM's protest was not being allowed to happen due to political bias against aboriginals and that they were doing this to harm the BLM's movement rather than it being a dumb thing to do in the middle of an epidemic. I get all the arguments that the last lot of protests didn't cause a spike in cases but it doesn't mean this one won't and thats why this is being regarded as an unnecessary risk at this time.

Andrews was pretty clear today the problems are in private run aged cares- from what i could gather there are at most minimal cases in state run centres.

(That is not to say all present cases are related to private run aged cares- but the differences might correlate to the way staff and residents are treated in both settings.)

What is state run aged care home?

Aged care is a prime example of the private sector doing a worse job than a socialised solution. Something this essential should be a pact we make as a society, that we'll pay for it, to care for our elders, not for private companies to cut corners and price gouge to drive up their share price and profits.

The same goes for childcare. Both make a mockery of the conservative lie they are for families. Fancy telling the public you want them to have more babies while everything you have done for two-and-a-half decades has disincentivised it and made it financially impossible for so many.

Isn't it federally run?
Federal legislation and funding. Centres are privately owned think BUPA, and smaller ones , others church , salvos? ... RSL? Councils used to own a couple but that's less common, not a core busines.
Recall youngest boomers are only 75 which is young end of entering care. So there isa 45 year spike in demand for aged care just taking off.
The dementia pandemic from 2030 wil put COVId in the shade.
