Coronavirus

Of course we need the proper checks and balances.

The question is do we just apply another hurdle and then another without checking if all the existing checks haven't already covered this area. It may be that several checks individually cover parts but then another check is added that covers the same ground.

I am not saying slash red tape just because. I am for reviewing the requirements and asking why we are doing it this way and is there a way to streamline the requirements. Might be these cant be changed but if we can streamline the process and get these projects moving quicker, especially in the next few years, we wont have the dual problems of big debt repayment and high unemployment payments.

my experience in European regs is that the red tape is introduced to stop unsafe and damaging practice and set level playing fields for all companies. It takes years with wide consultation.
Its not just a hurdle introduced without awareness of the wider ramifications.

The government should and will try to fasttrack new projects.
My preference is thousands of smaller projects around the country are supported, not the mega projects. Public housing, hospitals, schools are good ideas. Open to better ideas though.

But any fast-track and cash-splash will result in some rorts. It comes with the need for speed

Agree the failure on the GP was scomos fault as we know the VIC's follow his advice to the letter.

Good to know Dan puts the financial considerations before the health ones (at times). Strong leadership is hard to find.
*smile me dead.
Jazz the way i have read it, many posters have been critical of decisions and communications from state and federal pollies.
There has been some slant and bias from a few, but many have been clear its the issue not the politics.
Cruise ships, china travel with exemptions, border control, public events - including the GP, aged care home outbreaks, emergency stockpiles and sourcing PPE and testing, shaking hands and advocating attending rugby and crap jobkeeper stimulus (thanks MrP)

Your attempts to protect Scomo and blame Andrews is bordering on insane.
It is totally biased.

No golf and no school for another month?
Time to deal with it, and ride out the end of the storm
Most countries are in a significantly bigger and scarier storm. Golf and bunnings are not priorities

Victorian Deputy Chief Health Officer Annaliese Van Diemen covering herself in glory.....

"Sudden arrival of an invader from another land, decimating populations, creating terror,'' Annaliese van Diemen said on Twitter.

"Forces the population to make enormous sacrifices & completely change how they live in order to survive. COVID19 or Cook 1770?"

What a douche.

It wasn’t a very wise thing to say given the scrutiny she is under but I can’t see how what she said has any relevance whatsoever to the job she is doing or how well she is doing it

I can't see any relevance between covid and Cook. So why make the comparison?

I don't think you lose your right to make political comments just because you are a public servant. This is not simple as you are likely to have information which is not normally made public, but you are still a citizen with the usual right to comment on political issues of the day. Would be interesting if this got tested.
I’ve worked in the state public service. As a private citizen you cannot be stopped from expressing your opinion on social media although you have to be careful about information you have due to your job.
What senior public servants are advised to do is to avoid commentary that is overtly political or could embarrass the government.

I'm just trying to bring some balance td. IMO so far the collaboration on both sides has been pretty good and they've managed a hugely challenging situation. But if you think its been balanced commentary on PRE it just shows your inherent bias.

I'm no fan of scomo. But I don't understand how he is criticised for listening to his CMO and accused of playing politics. He's trying to balance the economic impact with the health one. And given the data and the modified behaviour of most of society he is trying to steer a way forward that involves releasing the brakes. The VIC's are out of step with much of the rest of the nation and not supportive of these moves. Isn't that politically motivated?

Anyway, I'm just grateful I have work and have a lot of empathy for all those out of it. But I fear for those whose short and long term prospects are pretty much *smile*.

A lot of diseases were aboard those boats that decimated indigenous populations..
COVID 19 has killed 93 Australians, none of which are Indigenous as far as I’m aware. So I still don’t see the relevance to warrant comparing Cook and COVID.

Do you think what she tweeted is helpful? The best way to draw attention to the current circumstances and challenges facing indigenous Australians?

Maybe it gives some pause to think but personally I don't think it does much but build resentment in many that had nothing to do with what happened 250 years ago. Surely there are better ways of drawing attention to disadvantage?

I didn't know Tigertim was a she.

TT - it’s a pretty loose/average comparison she made.. but what she’s getting at is Cook (an unknown) came with disease that killed people, and he knew his crew had syphilis. it was a massive change as this situation is now, only back then it killed thousands of indigenous Australians. she probably should’ve used Phillip as an example, his small pox blankets killed more..
