Coronavirus

yes, could be a lot of things but this is definitely a factor. In some countries testing has been so low that the only people who get tested are those who come to hospital or show symptoms.

I have seen one suggestion made that we do a regime of testing like we do with political polls i.e. a large enough stratified sample across the community is tested in their homes, at work etc and the results used to extrapolate the real level of infection rate and perhaps also give an idea of targeting of testing.

Has some merit imo

There are some countries way behind on testing. I was reading over the weekend that the UK have only just opened up testing for all medical personnel that haven't been overseas or in contact with someone from overseas. At the same time Australia is planning on testing anyone that has any symptoms. Would explain why our rate of testing per million people is about double the UK. It sounds like testing in Australia will most likely double over the next 2 weeks from where we are currently so somewhere around 1m tests.

What's essential about going to the supermarket when you can order online?
Have you actually tried to order online Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince? Tried to get it going when we were in mandatory isolation. Gave up in frustration as most of the order wasn't available and would take three days to arrive.

No I have not tried ordering online. I am still going to the supermarket. A poster questioned people out and about doing non-essential shopping when he himself was out effectively out and about doing non-essential shopping. Fact is, if we all planned better and had some patience we could all be at home ordering everything online. But I am willing to risk getting a take-away coffee, going to the supermarket, going to Bunnings. We still get fish and chips on a Fri night. In part to support a local small business (cafe/f&c shop) and in part to get out of the house.
Case numbers are low, and if you use common sense there is a very small chance of getting the virus. I think now we are all better "trained" in hygiene etc we should be moving towards releasing restrictions.

Chief medical officer Chris Whitty said: "This is a very rare situation but I think it is entirely plausible that this is caused by this virus - at least in some cases - because we know that in adults, who of course have much more disease than children do, there are big problems with the inflammatory process and this looks rather like an inflammatory process.

"Therefore given we've got a new presentation of this at the time of a new disease, the possibility ... that there is a link is certainly plausible. But numbers are very small and the key thing is that if parents are worried, phone up and get advice."

Case count (7:30am)

3,055,651 cases
211,065 deaths (6.91%)
56,446 severe (2%)
1,869,368 mild (61%)
918,772 recovered (30%)

Ratio of deaths just starting to decline after almost hitting 7%. That could be an artefact of faulty reporting (e.g. Russia), or it could mean treatment is becoming more effective.
Wonder what number of sickness and deaths related to digesting Disinfectant .. Esp in the US is over the last few days

Yes I believe we have a fantastic bipartisan national approach to this pandemic with great cooperation between Federal and State Govts. This school issue is driving a wedge into that and it concerns me that all the great progress could easily become undone.

I don't like the Federal Governments approach to this.

Didn't take him long to politicise this medical emergency. We need a can-do man as prime minister, not a total can't.

To be fair I reckon he's done a very good job to this point; as have the State Premiers and in particular Daniel Andrews. However, I think this is a backward step and quite disappointing.

I want schools to go back as much as anyone; I've got a 14 year old and this home schooling thing has got hair on it. But I'm happy to be guided by the Vic CMO and government on this one. It's not so much going back to school it's more the mass movement in the community.

Yes but what about per capita (as the Trump supporters bemoan)
i think the actual reported numbers are irrelevant as so many cases, and deaths are not captured, in most countries. what those numbers show is the horrific effect the virus has had, and how badly it has been handled in so many places.
(and are there really any Trump supported left- excluding Sky news after dark, and those who walk around the streets in the US protesting with guns on their hips.)

you think thats bad? just wait until everything is back to normal. we'll be paying back the debt while the rich and big business will benefit.

With low rates and a long repayment term the pay back of the debt can be managed. Sure it is a big debt but it is not the first time in our history we have had to pay back a debt.

The biggest question is can the Government get the economy moving again and the closed businesses opened and re hiring. We cannot afford to have the big debt as well as huge unemployment payments.

Yes some businesses wont re-open and some of those would have been in financial stress before the shutdown and would have closed in the near future anyway. But the others will re-open and the staff return.

The opportunity is to restructure the way we go about things and remove hurdles to business that do not need to be there. Heard that Gina Reinhart opened a mine in WA and had to get through 4,000 red tape hurdles to get there. Serious red tape overkill.
