Connors

Gotta admit, I thought that as well.

Dane Swan? looks like he has been on the Relton Roberts diet, but noone can stop him and he dosent stop running.
As far as Conners goes he needs to be our Heath Shaw.
I think he can have more impact on our games.

I'd prefer him in the midfield. Hmmm, Connors, Lids, Newman - seems everyone we play down at hbf these days I'd prefer in the midfield. Guess that's the modern game. The Hodge effect. Or to use that stupid seppo gridiron term I despise - the "quarterback" :)vomit) theory. Hodge is Hodge. Joe Namath is Joe Namath. Maybe it's time we came up with our own original ideas. (as a country and a football club)

Yeah, watching the game I thought his performance was decent without being great although maybe some people at the ground saw differently. Couldn't go.

I think people forget he's still only played 20ish AFL games and they want consistent very good performances now. It's just not going to happen. I thought he was good last year and improved a hell of a lot but then his form tailed off at the end of last year but was expected given his fitness base. Was in our top 10 players for the games he played if not better IMO. For mine, easily in the best 22 and safe at the moment. He's got talent. Connors seems to be a big whipping boy for Richmond fans and I think while some of it is deserved, a lot of that is unfair criticism.

I'd argue the complete 180-degree opposite all day long. He's no whipping boy thats for sure, and your perception that he is amazes me (not having a go, just find it interesting) . I've often been amazed at how he's escaped the vitriol after a flogging in the past. I'd argue that Connors' veneer of class means that he tends to be cut much more slack by PREnders and media hacks. While battling players who have been steady, or spectacular improvers, like White, Jackson and King, have to do much more to get half as much acknowledgement. His good games, and he has had a few, have tended to be when the side has played well, wheras the aforementioned players that lack obvious class, have shown time and again they are capable of sparking something when we look on the ropes. Thankfully though, I have faith that the coach knows what is going on.

Connors is the closest thing we've got to Steve Johnson. Steve was always talented but in the early part of his carreer he was ordinary at times. As an opposition fan I liked the ball in his hands because he could be counted to wave the white flag in tight situations - get caught doing too much, fly one handed, try the outrageous play that gets intercepted.....sound familiar?

But when Johnson started straight lining the ball, running hard offensively and defensively and doing the simple things well - everything else fell into place .. and then his outrageous talent won games.

That's the template for Dan and it looks like Dimma and Conors understand it. Appears to be our designated run past player and his job is to kick long and well.

One has to remember he's played bugger all footy at top level. Dont think he's played 30 games.

Can be infuriating at worst but if he works on all the things he can control, effort, fitness, conditioning, team first play then he could be a beauty.

Good player.Once he goes forward with a few more games under his belt he'll be even better.

As mentioned, played less than 30 games. Need to get another 30 - 40 games into him and make an assessment then. He may be Steve Johnson - or Greg Tivendale. Too early to call, but I'm happy to see him get a game. Now if he could only get a right side...

Very well put re GT V SJ. But I reckon we should have enough to go on after 2011 rather than after 2012. Needs to start improving, rather than going backwards or sideways.

Agree. My guess is that 90% of the reason for going back/sideways relates to the fact that he has very little right side to his game. He must learn not to run right to receive as he is always forced to do a U-turn, unless he can cut back inside. Something he can/will do when he gets stronger (or quicker).

thought he played well last week up to 3 quarter time then had quiet last quarter. Not sure why the angst against him given he is building fitness after a set back. Looks good to me.

A major problem I see with Connors is execution and decision making whilst under pressure. Doesn't seem to cope too well when the heat is on. Not sure I'd class this as laziness as such. If he can improve in this regard, he should be a good player.

He is important for our structure . Gets the ball , is versatile and is a left sided player ( too much as some have said) . In the past we have had a team full of left sided players but we have the opposite now.

I like Connors and I reckon his best is in front of him . Has mongrel too . Concentration and sticking to the basics is the key for him.

Still would like to see him wing and drifting forward in the long term . Hopefully as others develop that can happen . Has been a very good goal kicker at Coburg and also has kicked a few at senior level . Takes a good mark which we don't see when he is in the back half.

No no. I'm saying that there is generally a bit much vitriol on here, but conners escapes it for reasons I've stated. Maybe I'm being harsh, but I just hate players going one-handed, hate it. Will forgive a very young player the odd lapse, astbury has a few lapses this year and thats OK for where he's at. But Conners is further down the track and goes one-handed too often. I try hard to be objective because seeing that might cloud my judgement, but I reckon the more the situation in a game requires he takes a clean possession, the less likely he is to do so. For a player with alleged class, that should be his strength.

Compare and contrast with King, White, Conca, Batchelor.

Too laconic. Intensity not there at the moment. Needs a few sessions with Kingy.

Perhaps get Cuz down again to smack him in the chops.
