Connors

Seemed to line up a lot on the wing against the Hawks.
With the emerging options of Batch & Conca in the hb role it looks like he's being tagged for a step up into the midfield.
Yes there are legitimate questions on whether he has the fitness & discipline for such a role. if he does he will be damaging.

I know I read somewhere ( just can't remember where ) that he was the fittest he had ever been by a long way . Maybe it was interview on the radio with someone a month or so back.
Like him further forward . He can find the ball and he can kick a goal too but he just needs to reduce the difference between his best and worst , especially when it comes to his disposal . He can kick well at times , but then lapses back .

I often wondered last season if Connors move to half back was purely for a learning curve, he was a down hill skier, throw him behind the ball and teach him about being accountable. Its not his best or natural position but for learning about the defensive side of the game you cant beat it.

He is so skilful his high turnover rate has been overlooked by a lot (including me) as a temporary learning process. However against the Hawks he was at his worst again, the question may be asked is his occasional poor ball use a chronic problem?

I think Connors is an elite kick but his disposal can be very poor no doubt. He almost looks laconic at times.
My guess is much of this is fitness related but could easily be prone to mental lapses as well.
Consistency is DC's challenge in 2011.

I like Connors, he has the ability and potential to be a very good player for us. But his disposal at times can be VERY frustrating. Other times he will hit a guy on the chest from a good distance. Another time miss someone from 15 metres away.

He needs to have consistent, accurate disposal before he can take that step up. I am hoping for a big year from Dan.

Bowden - like i reckon.
yep exactly . Bowden was a beautiful kick of the football generally but every now and again there would be this inexplicable howler . That's Dan as well .

It could be fitness but I also suspect he gets ahead of himself , too over confident .

I loved Joel Bowden when he arrived, yet i whipped him harder than anyone over his last 3-4 years .Bowden had class no doubt about it, he did have time with the footy and was damn clever too probably too much so, shame was he was too laconic in the end and footy had changed in regard to his type from when he started. Footy demands even more intensity from those who have got by on natural talent and class over their junior careers

Connors has ability and agro and touch of class, what he needs is application, effort and workrate.

If he puts it together he will be a very important player for the Tigers.

I'd say people are very harsh on him. For a 22yr old who Has only played 24 games and was pick 58 in the draft I reckon he is a guy with a really good future. The problem with him is his natural playing style - he is very much in the Joel Bowden mould where he may have 15 great kicks and 2 or 3 poor ones a match, but his laconic style makes it look a lot worse than most. Seems very casual. Hit up a few guys with a switch beautifuly on sat night. He is also tough and good overhead which is also two great assets. Definite keeper for the future IMO.

I reckon Dan may be earmarked for wing or high half forward. He has a massive leap and can do the spectacular. He may be our Steve Johnson and able to break games open.

3 med/small fwds and 2 wings = 5 spots
prefer houli, morton or grigg on the wings or HFF
edwards and king in the fwd line and conca and batchelor coming in

cant see a spot for connors

Bowden was unfairly maligned imo and this is from someone who absolutely can't stand poor disposal. If your're getting 25 kicks/ week in the backline then it's inevitable you are going to turn over a couple. It's just numbers.

It looks like Connors is going to be unfairly labelled a poor disposer too. And for the same reasons.

Agree. Joel Bowden gets a shocking wrap in general. Ten times the footballer Nick Maxwell is.

Connors can play. Def keeper.

Have been a critic of Connors for ages and still am. He is a frustrating type, in that you can see the potential but are highly doubtful he will ever reach it.
At first it was his attitude, laziness, selfishness, lack of fitness, lack of dedication, unwilling to work both ways and the list goes on.
Finally got his wake up call last year and it appears to have smoothed off some of his jagged edges. There is still plenty of work to do for DC. Last year was probably the first year he put in a fair dinkum pre-season and this will have been his second. Our lack of development ability in the past and his attitude to his footy, would have ensured that we won't find out until the next few years what he is really capable of.
I was all for trading him halfway through last year and am on the record here at PRE (even in this thread from memory) as saying that.
In some ways he is like Steve Johnson. He has a lot of ability but was lazy, loved a drink and being a larrikin.
DC appears to have matured a bit since this time last year but he is still a kid really and his football experience at AFL level is only 20 odd games from memory.
My main areas of concern for him atm are, disposal efficiency, complete lack of accountability as a defender and his fitness level (mentioned above, in fairness to DC)
Do I think he could be a bloody good player for us if he improves in these areas? Absolutely.
Do I think he will be a bloody good player for us? I have too many reservations about that still but this year will be a good guide.
I want DC to succeed, just worried it might never happen. Much the same as for Griffiths, but for completely different reasons.

To say DC needs to improve is a little like saying a fish needs water. Pretty darn obvious. I seriously doubt DC would be saying to the coach "you know what Damo? I think I know everything, no improvement required here". Seriously. Everyone on the list would be trying to improve all of their deficiencies. I'd be concerned if they weren't.
