Changes v Dees

48 hours ago I wanted Pickett dropped. Now he stays.

Time for experimenting stops. It’s all chips on the table. Experience now counts as we enter a big game.

Which brings me to Cumberland. He can’t be trusted. Just yet. Yes he kicked 6 goals but a game against Melbourne is at another level. We can’t afford petulant performances this week.

Out: Banks (unlucky but see above)
In: Short

I agree,

But id like to squeeze bauer another debut.

Im also resentful that JRoss's ascent comes with Marlions descent.

Gotta put marlion somewhere he can play

Our forward line is pretty predictable. Pure midfielders kicked 6 of our goals last game. Pretty much sums it up. Regardless of his current deficiencies Cumbo makes it unpredictable and keeps his opponent honest. He can play a bit taller as well which is important as we currently have very little forward presence. If we give Dees a 36 point lead we won't be coming back.

Last time we played Melbourne Shorty had missed 3 games with a calf injury. He was our best that night. We were in the contest for most of the game because we lowered our eyes going into the forward line and didn't blaze away. This must be our plan again next Sunday. This will mean playing a bit more possession footy and less long kick to a contest. If we are switched on we can win this game. Not sure who comes in with Shorty but I suspect Cumberland will add some spice to this type of footy. Whoever plays the 2nd tall forward role (Miller or Ryan) they need to separate from Jack at all costs. If Pickett plays forward he must lead up to and mark the ball. He can roost it from 50 so that shouldn't be an issue. Not sure who goes out - either Banks, Mansell or Pickett.. The Coal train needs another run, hopefully in the starting 22.
Yes, we can't do long kicks to Jack since that allows May and Lever to cut off our forward moves with ease just as Sicily did last week. They must look forward to playing us, so our coaches must get smarter. In fact seeing what Sicily did was just what our coaches needed to see. I hope they are going to work out a way to have our forwards leading up, to make May and Lever accountable but that means fast ball movement and space to lead into. Pickett could be a leading forward? Perhaps Baker starts on Lever?
Having more players available is a good problem to have but we need to see more of Cumbo in the VFL just a pity we have a bye.
If Short is fully fit he replaces Banks unfortunately. Need both Miller and Young in their roles.
In: Coulthard, Short
Out: Banks, Mansell (Sub)

Agree with this.

There's a couple I would like to bring in but it is hard to see who to drop. Don't think Pickett will miss and Ross is now a lock. Only really leaves Banks.

I hear you but at a guess Mansell and Banks for Short and Cumberland. Coulthard is either the sub again or he too comes into the 22, not sure how he'll go over 4 qtrs but I like what I see though.

Next week Nank is back and I dare say if Miller remains in and doesn't have any real impact then he will go out and it will be Nank and Soldo.
Soldo looks way fitter and stronger, much leaner than in previous years.

I reckon Coulthard stays as sub for at least 1 more week.

I dont like the idea of Nank and Soldo playing together, but i can see it being trialled. We are getting little from our 2nd ruck. The fear would be them getting run off, and ignored by a good intercept marking defender.

Solda is playing well and Nank will be ready to go on comeback, I say its our best combination, throw in Miller / Ryan (only one not both). This gives us great options in the Ruck, around the ground and forward line rotation.

for this week, it will depend on how the coach wants us to play. if Lowering the eyes approach, then Cumberland needs to come in for Mansell & Short replaces Banks. Need the weapons, plus if Short is able to kick 2 to 3 goals from 55, it would be a bonus. Coulthard comes in as a sub, similar to last game. to provide the run.

Nank and Soldo both offer more in the ruck than Miller... do they offer more forward as well?

Miller is ok one on one but not much chop in the big packs. Nank and Soldo harder to outmark/move from the drop zone and more chance of bringing the ball to ground when deep forward or with the long kick out of defence.

Interesting question. I've often wondered whether there'd be any merit in training Soldo as a permanent forward. Can mark, can kick, can smash a pack. But nobody would accuse him of being a footy genius in the Jack mold.

But would he have to be? If he learnt the systems, ran the patterns, and didn't overthink it, could he aim for something like the 2-meter Peter role? Hmmmm.
