Can the Richmond Football Club afford to take John Butcher?

the club should learn from its mistakes from previous drafts,

make out that they are picking up butcher then snag someone else,

trengrove is a beauty but may not be there at 3 and also after 2-3 seasons will want to go home. really good kids at geelong falcons and gippsland power.

just prey they dont screw it up.

if butcher hasnt got a footy brain, let someone develop him.

You said TW would have the THE major say. Dare say CC as list manager would head up the List Mgt committee.

CC had only just started and TW is an old hand and cunning like a rat. I can easily see him getting his way.

If we recruit Butcher this club may as well fold... but before it does I would deliver Craig Cameron an almighty wedgey.

I know hardly anything about these kids but the old saying still rings true, if there's any doubt always take the big guy.

If we are to take a hotshot young mid at 3, you'd want to be pretty certain that they'll make an impact and not be the next Aaron Fiora only to see Butcher be the next Roughead/Franklin/Richo/Pavlich etc.

Just reading the junior boards and it sounds to me as if Scully and Trengrove are the standouts and after that it becomes more of a lottery.

Not saying Butchers the one but if there are two footballers you think are of equal ability/value, I'd take the tall.
If a small is considered better then by all means take them ahead of him just be sure that they are.

I would be pretty comfortable that any of Scully, Trengove, Martin or Morabito will more of a impact then Butcher at AFL level. The top four is pretty strong this year but I still think Morabito could be something out of the box and a super AFL player.

But the key is, all four of those players would be a step in the right direction and set a clear message for the Damien Hardwick and put a end to the glass half full types that have dominated Richmond and left everyone with that frustrated look and asking the question of how we ended in this spot.

You can't give wedgies with a keyboard I'm afraid.

Oh yes you can ........ just put me in a room full of computers with Wallet and Miller and i'll prove it.

What hindsight? Thats a BS excuse.

Everyone knew there were compromised drafts coming up BEFORE last years draft thats why the smart clubs took some bottom agers who would of been top 30 picks this year (yes even Carlton). Go back to some post-draft threads if you need proof.
Wasn,t talking about the Draft. Was talking about how the club rated the list.Even so the AFL didnt announce the over the top concessions to the GC until the start of this year.

So now its what the coach wants? Terry never went to draft camp in 5 years but he's going to have a say in how many picks we use? I dont buy that crap. We have actually used our picks well in 07 and 08 but not had enough choices. Schulz/Thomson trades one of the reasons for this.
Go and have a listen to Hardwicks press conference. He out lined exactly what type of players he wants to be in charge of.How many picks etc is upto the list manager and the Recruiter to deliver the requests of the Coach.

I've been a fan of Butcher for a while and I dont think the bagging is warranted. He is just in poor form but not a sh!t player like some make out. Martin would be a good choice for us but if Butcher goes outside the top 6 that club will have a lot to work with because he has shown he can play.
He might not be a crap player but he,s certainly not putting his hand up either to suggest he,s worthy of a top 10 pick let alone a top 5 pick .Maybe its by design. He did mention in an interview that he,d hate to be picked up by a club who Tanked[preception of].

Know bugger all about this Butcher, but remember Buddy was highly rated before the nat champs & had pretty quite champs & he slipped, look how he turned out.Just a thought!

God forbid we give him a chance.

And what sit back and wait for another three years and start another rebuild.

CC has had enough time to at least set a blueprint or a foundation and I fail to see us only going after guys who can kick.

CC joined as list Mgr at end of 07', long before any decisions were made on players at the end of 08'.

& if TW got his way in regards to keeping players the responsibility fully lies with CC as list Mgr for letting him.

Its that simple.

Agree up to a point. Personally, I agree on Tuck (is as good as he's ever gunna get, not good enough), Graham, (too far off whats required, even for age) and King (see Tuck comment).

As for McGuane, Jackson, White, Polo, all have upside and deficiencies. All 4 are young. Short term, all stay due to the parlous state of the list. Long term, depending on individual improvement and role, 2 will turn out to be reasonably skilled players who can help us get up the ladder.

(I reckon Polo has improved this year to the point where he's looking like a long term player. Jackson could be a Kirk-type, fell away in second half but showed a lot early. )

It really doesn't matter much what I or you think on individuals though, the point is, As I've said like a stuck record, every side has flawed players. Just a matter of minimising their numbers and fitting them in properly.
A lot of people on PRE post as if you need 10 Judds and 10 Goodes and 2 J Browns to win a flag.
just on those 4 you mention.
mcguane and polo have had 5 yrs what really has changed from their first couple of yrs. the honest answer is stuff all or little. there is no upside to these duds.

dan jackson has had 6yrs trust me hes at the very top of his game he wont get better the odds are he will go backwards just doesnt have the tools.

matt white a small nippy player with terrible skills has had 4 yrs doesnt find enough of the ball as a mid or use it well and doesnt kick goals when forward. for a small player he should be close to what he will be in the scheme of things hes behind so many players of similar type. the idea is to catch up and go past other clubs. he will be 23 at the start of next yr15/4/87.
hes had 50 odd games put into him surely we have seen enough its time to move him on rather than just making the problem worse by hanging on for another 2 or 3 yrs.
ya know thats what we nearly always do with players like white hang on for to long and it stifles list development.

he comes out of contract at the end of next yr regardless of what he does next yr he has to go at the end of that yr.again he doesnt have the required tools.he will always slip back to mediocrity.
