Bye Bye Jack Higgins!

Need to take this opportunity to establish a reputation. Not worsen it.
Seriously? I was only joking above but Butler for 54 firmly established our recent reputation as a potential easy touch who should be tested repeatedly. Not too fussed playing hardball for Higgins. Our recent trades with Gold Coast have also been eminently reasonable. I don't see that trading reputation is something we have to work on.

We are just playing the long game with Gold Coast - Rowell to us as a Restricted Free Agent in 5-6 seasons!

I understand how we work gents and it’s beautifully, however the Higgins situation is completely different imho , club has gone above and beyond for him , and he just walks while contracted , plenty of clubs wouldn’t have kept him on . I believe he owes the club not the other way round . BEllis chased coin , don’t agree with it when your at the best club in the land , but understand. Jack’s just spat the dummy imho and I think the club has every right to do what’s best for them .
50/50 each way .

Agree.
Each case on its merits.
Each player on its merits.

The 21 + jack for 17

Seems light.

But its entirely dependent on who we take with 17.

If the tigers do that, we can be pretty sure theres a player we want widely rated in the 17-20 range

Surely that won't be it. I would expect a future 2nd or 3rd on top of that

Deal done.

St Kilda receives: Higgins, Pick 21 and a future fourth rounder. Richmond receives: Pick 17 and future 2nd rounder

In the works of Mikey Palmice, "Hi Jack. Bye Jack".

So effectively we got him for a future 2nd rounder. Which most likely will be in the 30's.

Unders.

Well said Harry.

Weve assembled 40 humans (plus dusty) who are all very good at footy. We treat them like humans.

We win premierships.

In a few more years, we win more premierships than anyone ever has before.

humanity is not really something you can do by halves

This is the big picture and it makes the most sense. It’s easy to fixate on extracting maximum value in a deal, which I’m susceptible to at times as well, but the above is the way to go.

We do create some problems with this mindset, but the benefits do outweigh the small costs. Perhaps we could make it clear to players they’re welcome to leave, but if they do, we’d like them to be open to multiple clubs so there’s a little bidding war to help us get fair value. Otherwise clubs will know we’ll accept unders.

The good news for next year is every club in the AFL will want to trade with us, so we won’t have any issues attracting a bidding war in the near future.

In the long run, the good karma should come back to benefit us eventually, somehow. (Maybe after we stop winning premierships)

That a massive kok slap for us.
It's like giving up fiora to get Ben lennon.
Stkilda at worse will finish top 5-6 next year, meaning a pick betweem 30-33 for Higgins.
Thats a *smile* deal.

Even as a hypothetical I wouldn’t want Butler back
Teams have to evolve
It was a sour joke on my part, spilt milk now. But how was losing Butler for pick 56, or whatever it ended up as, 'evolution'? Rated the best SF in the whole AFL in 2020; most goals comfortably, highest pressure factor and tackles; led his club's goal-kicking tally, placed second in their best and fairest and was nominated to the extended All-Australian squad. See Robbo's top 50.

Easily ahead of all our current SFs. Club got that one way wrong.
Hence, the Aints think they can hoodwink us again on Higgins; got in his ear.

Doesn't evolution move forward not back? Would swap Higgins for Butler in a flash. One suits our style; the other not.

Like i said, we could land the next buddy franklin at 17 and throw picks 18,19,20 and 21 into chaos.

We wont know the winner of this trade until 2024.

But on the face if it, saints have done well.

Whats the point of free agency if 30 gamers are nominating their destination?

Its like auctioning your house and the agent only allowing 1 bidder

I'm happy to lose each trade week and win the flag the next year.

Carlton are happy to be announced trade and draft champs each year.

Weak as P1ss
we are useless at the trade table. it’s already been stated by GC that Richmond are good to work with.
Its because we like to bend over and touch are toes.

I think we are more than happy with Dow and Ross as midfield anchors over the next decade. Jack will have a better career at Saints than with us. Actually quite astute by Higgins to leave now.
