Bye Bye Jack Higgins!

So effectively we got him for a future 2nd rounder. Which most likely will be in the 30's.

Unders.
Well even less than a future second rounder as we give up our future fourth rounder.

Really weak I reckon regardless of where he sat in our pecking order.

Like i said, we could land the next buddy franklin at 17 and throw picks 18,19,20 and 21 into chaos.

We wont know the winner of this trade until 2024.

But on the face if it, saints have done well.

Whats the point of free agency if 30 gamers are nominating their destination?

Its like auctioning your house and the agent only allowing 1 bidder

I agree - Ellis put in and did his time with his tigers - contributed to two flags so he goes with our blessings

Higgins - still waiting for him to repay the development and care we have put into him - the club expected much more from him I would say.

I think we are more than happy with Dow and Ross as midfield anchors over the next decade. Jack will have a better career at Saints than with us. Actually quite astute by Higgins to leave now.
Yes it is astute by him. And even more so by the Saints.

I dont begrudge him at all. I notice others do.

What is so disappointing is what we have accepted for him. He should have been made to stay a year, if he had a good year, there are many suitors for good small forwards - Hawthorn, Melb, Ess being just 3 I could pick.

Yep. Getting diddled once is bad enough, but twice. What? We couldn't see the Aints coming after their big win on Butler last year? The difference is that Higgins was under contract, and a first round pick. So we have given our #17 pick in 2017, plus added 3 years of investment and development, away for a hypothetical player upgrade in this most 'cloudy' of drafts. Then one in the 30's next year that will probably drop a lot. Meh.

Saints must think we are their feeder club. I just don't see why we should be giving other clubs a leg-up. Is that what happened for us when we were struggling for the best part of 37 years? Don't dissipate your strength.

Maybe Blair is not that good - he should have been able to extract a better deal than that given he was contracted

3 years of development? His first season was clearly his best. Big question on how much improvement he's got left.
Only time will tell whether this has been a good trade or not..

I totally agree Leon. This is my beef with the deal.
Not that a player wants to leave, but what we give them away for.
I hope there's some view to turning 17 into something better but honestly, a 2nd rounder next year is so weak for a contracted player.

Hope Grimey, Vlastuin and Bakes give him a game to remember, for all the wrong reasons, when we play them next year. Want to see him get a real torrid time.

For me it's like Jack has torched us a little bit here. ..... Pretty sure we stood by him when times were tough and would have thought the least he could do was to honour his contract and work his arse off to get back in the team.
Let's win the flag again with blokes who wanna be there!

Agree. It was clear (understandably) that he wasn't fit this year. He looked too heavy. That happens when you are coming off major surgery. There was talk he wouldn't even make it back so the fact he did was great but he was always going to be undercooked which was going to impact his ability to break into a premiership team.

On talent, he is best 22. I would have liked to have seem him set himself up with a mega pre season and back himself to push into the team in 2021. The fact he chose an easier path says a bit.

getting diddled LOL, our team of professional list / recruiting people negotiated to what a reasonable person would think was a fair deal.

I will add that our team of professional list / recruiting people most probably have access to all the facts

A future 2nd in a bumper draft & a 4 pick upgrade in this draft & we give up a future 4th ( would we use it ? ) and a bloke who wants to play elsewhere ( and to be fair, may struggle to get a game with us next year)

Thanks, Bob, but I just amended/edited my post a little as reacted too quickly. Slight upgrade this draft and future 2nd to be correct.

I reckon we are trying to get a higher rated tall in this draft. Will be interesting to see who we pick up and who is available at the next 4-5 spots after our pick

Because its a bumper draft next year is why it should have been a 1st.
Or min 2nd AND 3rd.
And sure he could have struggled to get a game - but we might even have injuries and he might be very good!

Its not that he is best 22 or not.

It's what we didnt get for a 1st round pick just 3 years ago.

Its unders for sure

Some very hard on Jack. Players don't look at clubs like supporters do, it's their career.

Not a bad deal, not great but ok. Maybe we can use this to move up even more in the 1st round

Makes you wonder how influential the managers are around this - same manager as Lynch. He got Lynch to Tiges.

Short memory. Think 2018 as an 18yo (you can't judge him on anything else as he had a dodgy brain). Averaged 16 disposals and kicked 15 goals as a forward. Oozes smarts and creativity. If he applied himself as much as Castagna, you seriously think he wouldn't achieve more?

I'd prefer to keep Jack but understand why he went. He's banked making it in AFL and needs to max his return while he can.

So you think the 1st diddle - Butler - was a big win for us? LOL.

It's hard to evaluate Higgins value properly due to the coming back from major surgery factor etc so I am going on what we gave for him, and what we invested. He was contracted too. Overall, I call it another win to the Aints. As many others seem to as well.

So I don't agree. Our LM team have proven excellent ... on recent rookie and FA selections. Not so sure on first rounders. LOL

To me, what seems even worse about this deal is us giving them a future 4th - as if somehow it was up to us to throw in more to sweeten the deal!!

And yes, before everyone replies that we may not even use a 4th - I get it.

But Clubs throw in 4th rounders to sweeten deals usually. As if that was what WE had to do. Rather than the other way round? They needed to throw us a 3rd.

This magnanimous approach by the Club is leaning too far to one side. Not our side.
