Bye Bye Jack Higgins!

Was a serious op with risks but the expectation was always that he would make a full recovery if it went to plan. He did return a lot sooner than expected though, so maybe that was a factor in his numbers being a little down.

Probably only Bailey (9th b&f) clearly ahead of him at present. It's great that he's in a hurry but he already has a final under his belt and 40 games in the competition's best system. Plus a GOTY...

Reckon we're being hoodwinked after a predictable lull in his development. He's contracted, St.Kilda should be required to offer overs.

Powell has has a ripper year for Gold Coast too

Rumour is Saints 2021 2nd and 3rd round draft picks.

That would leave us with 2021 draft picks:

1st
2 x 2nd rounders
3 x 3rd rounders

Not a bad hand if we want to trade up in what is expected to be a good draft post covid.

But how do those picks look if the saints finish top 4...... Potentially early 40's and late 50's ?

I think that is too many picks. We wouldn't be using them and no club would want to help us trade up.

Think we’ve missed a beat here, if it’s a future 2nd and 3rd. stkilda will be challenging us next year, and we’ve just made them stronger, without weakening their draft position this year.

This year is supposed to be a much poorer draft.

If Caldwell from GWS gets them a first round pick who has played less games than Higgins then I would be disappointed if we allow him to go for ‘minimum chips’.

Isn't that every year? Next year looking better than this year.
Due to COVID , kids in Vic not seeing much footy to show recruiters their abilities , I think that next year ‘should be better’ than this years draftees ( rings true ).

Going to be interesting what our strategy is going forward as this will show what our club is thinking.

We will possibly have a few near the end, more $ available to fill list needs and recruit some kids to compliment us going forward and still in the window.

Kicked the most creative goal I have ever seen.

Is as clean as Prestia, and has unparalleled anticipation and instincts.

Makes up for any lack of toe by being two steps ahead of everyone else.

Keep or two first rounders.
But cant kick. Thats his biggest flaw along with his lack of leg speed.
He is no where near the same class as Prestia.

Of course he can kick.

He is not a long kick, but he's a good kick. His set shots have been shaky, but he's very young, and even more inexperienced. He's a great field kick, over short distances. It's a limitation, yes. But it's not fatal. Especially as an inside midfielder or goal sneak.

Of course he's not in the same class as Prestia. Yet. Prestia is a best and fairest winning in a premiership team, A plus grade, goal kicking, ultra mid.

I just said Jack Higgins is just as clean. Similarly balanced. And better overhead. Speed is comparable. Plus much younger and without the degenerative injury issues. Prestia also has hundreds of games of experience up his sleeve.

Prestia has also had periods of poor kicking, usually following interrupted periods, which has been Higgo's whole career.

He is not Prestia. But could be. I would be keeping him. And as he is contracted, if someone else wants him, they'll have to pay overs, not market value.

Has limitations and very little upside. Trade will be an early Christmas present if we can extract a good deal.

Decades ago when Essendon won a couple of flags they had a bloke named Calthorpe (I think) who reminds me of Higgo
Little legs, slow and not much pace but he did OK for a while

That deal that I read where we swap first rounders for this draft and also get the Saints future second pick would be a good outcome for us. I think the Saints aren’t keen though. We ‘gave’ them Butler for Gawd’s sake!

We main need to look at the trade as a sum of all parts type of thing.

If the trade is a 2nd and 3rd next year and a swap of 1sts this year (we might need to give a 4th or something back to the Saints) then its feasible from a points perspective and would set us up for a major trade position for next year.

I still think we take max 3 picks this year (assuming list sizes decrease to 40) so we won't need our 2nd. Picks 17 and 36 are worth 1527 points or between pick 8 and 9. If we could trade up to something, maybe the Bombers or someone like that, we'd probably have to give up a 3rd next year to get Pick 7 or 8, but could be worth it.

The other options are Adelaide, GWS, North, maybe even the Dogs at Pick 14, maybe we trade 17, 36 and get 14 and either a 2nd next year or an upgrade of our 3rd to their 2nd (they would need to "win" the trade as several teams will be bidding for that pick to give them more draft points this year).

If we did that with the Dogs, we'd be left with Pick 14, MRJ and Baxter this year, and have 1st, 3 2nds and 3 3rds next year, assuming all the above happens.

Reckon theres definately more to the Higgins deal than a swap of 1sts this year and a 2nd next year, else the trade would have already been done.

The AFL site seems to indicate some involvement of another of the saints 2021 picks in the deal

we should be asking for a swap of first rounders and their second rounder as minimum

I'm guessing it will be something like future 2nd, future 3rd with a future 4th going back and maybe still that swap of 2020 1sts. We are lining up a very strong draft hand for next year, which is when we expect several retirements or it allows us to trade up the draft (or push picks into 2022) so we'll have a flexible draft hand next year.
