Well we had to get something for him.. He didnt want to stay, we didnt want to lose him. You cant just let him go to psd for nothing. So did we have a choice really? we couldnt pay the world for him.

Where did we finish in 2004? Who had first PSD pick?

We finished last...I'm not sure it might have been us?

Back to square 1, he didnt want to stay. We couldnt win! I think even Terry Wallace tried to get him to stay!.

If we hadn't screwed the picks we got for him would you think differently ?

I can only go by how I felt at the time not the hindsight. This from good ol' 2004.

Draft picks in no way guarantee success. It is an absolute lottery apart from the top few picks.
Miller is really under the pump now.
I'm sorry but Ottens is a proven footballer at AFL level and the two kids we pick(12 & 16) are not.
How the *smile* can we talk about Ottens not reaching his potential when these kids low in the draft may not even play a single AFL game?
I can't believe we've spent all week on a deal that's only come to this. What's happing with our other players who REALLY should be traded. I haven't heard a single f***ing thing. Ottens is a good player, soft maybe but still incredibly skillful. It's most of the dud's in our team that should have been weeded out alot earlier than Brad Ottens. If the handbaggers win the premiership with him in their team I'll be as furious as I am now.
PS: Sorry had to vent my spleen on this one.

I just felt that Otto was then in his prime was worth more to us that he was letting go for those two later first round selections.
He's a rare player who's a good tap ruck who can also play forward both of those positions have been massive issues for us since he left.

No doubt Ottens has had a bumpy ride at Geelong but I always felt that if we got the midfield right that Ottens would be a valuable part of our side.

Geelong had that midfield and the Cats won a flag. The rest is history.

If he was fit, he'd still be very handy in the ruck for us right now.

but I do take your point that Patto & Meyer as compensation were a disaster.

We finished 13th.

Who was it? Doggies? Carlton? Melbourne?

That was 2003. 2004 we finished last. Ottens went to Geelong that draft. We had first pick in PSD. We had all the cards. If we wanted to keep Ottens we could have done so. Plainly we didnt want to. You can accept the Tiger spin or you can look at the facts and make judgement. Tigers were keen to get a couple of draft picks. As I said previously we did well to get the draft picks we did, but blew them and in hindisght would have been much better off keeping Ottens rather than try to beat the system.

I did get the year wrong, I edited that post.
How can you say we didnt want to keep him, that is rubbish. The guy left for the money. Why would you redraft a player that doesnt want to stay at the club. Wallace even tried to convince him to stay..

I know we didnt want to keep him because you dont offer someone LESS than what they're already earning when they ar 24 years old and about to hit their prime as a ruckman. Of course hindsight has shown that Ottens has struggled further at times with injury, however, it is plain that teh Tigers were more interested in gaining draft picks than keeping Ottens. Maybe the Tigers couldnt afford to continue to pay Ottens what they were in the past, that still points to them in the end not wanting to keep him to maybe alleviate money issues. That is bad business management and player list management, not a reflection on Ottens wanting what he believed was fair value.

So you agree with paying him the world for little return? Ok we didnt want him then. Like what someone said before, we have a bad habit of paying shitloads of money to players that didnt deserve it..

So what was the offer? I dont remember having that sort of information.

off a REALLY rusty memory, I think it was down to the $250-300k mark, with the rest in incentives (i.e. has a decent year, ends up earning same as before).

Did you maintain your rage Tooheys when the Cats won the flag?

Lets stop talking about that donut, and get the thread back to Lids.

Someone mentioned earlier that he is waiting until the new coach is locked in before signing.

I have no issue with this.

If my boss changed, I'd be wanting out too if they replaced him with a complete and utter tool. After all, how would you be if you were Deledio, you resign, and then find out your stuck playing under Gary Ayres for two years?

Sign a decent coach, and it will all be sweet 8)

The theory of the Ottens trade was the spot on. Could have been the smartest move of the last 20 years. Execution bad. Ottens had all the goods but no ticker. Thats not to say he's gutless, he's just not interested. Playing footy because its easier and better paid than a plumber, or marketing manager or whatever. Good pick up for Geelong, good for a good side.

Back to thread topic, keep BD forchrissakes. Can't believe this is being comtemplated

Disagree but I know you were a strong advocate at the time.

As you say moving on. I too would make sure we keep Lids.

Best wishes for Brett's 100th game.

I am looking forward to him ripping the game apart on Sunday.
heard Lids has a splinter in his big toe and we are going to tank, oops I mean rest him for a couple of weeks just in case.
Bling might take a week or two off as well so he can take Lids to his hypnotherapist and help him recover from the anguish of his injury.

How do you know it is far from the truth? What happens if he does want to do a Brad Ottens and leave the club?

Let's just say Brett's a ten times better bloke and clubman than Ottens will ever be. I'm not sure where this obsession of Deledio leaving is coming from. Is it paranoia? Bloody hell relax people.
