How do you know it is far from the truth? What happens if he does want to do a Brad Ottens and leave the club?

Why do people keep bringing up this stupid example? Richmond's contract offer to Ottens at the time was a joke. They were asking him for a pay cut at a time where he was reaching his peak. They gave him no choice and frankly appeared that they didn't want him to have a choice. In the end the Tigers did well to get the draft picks for Ottens, pity however about who we picked. Ended up being a huge loss for the Tigers.

The Tigers wont be making the same mistake with Deledio. As mentioned he is core to the Tigers future.

Well he wasnt performing? Why should you keep paying a squillion to a guy out of form. In the end he wanted to leave. He did not want to play for the tigers.

"reaching his peak" ?!?!? I seem to recall the last couple of years Otto was 14 colours of average with us, with the wonderful "potential" tag being thrown around.

off memory it was a cut in base pay, but heavily incentivized assuming he came good (injury had been an issue). he wanted it all up front, so he left

wait, thats wrong. he told us all he left for a fresh start, and it wasn't about the money :hihi

Shows how short-sighted some of us are (supporters and management). When does a ruckman reach their peak? 24 years old he was. The year he left he averaged 13 possessions, 5.5 marks, a goal, and 24 tapouts a game. We basically lost a tall player with talent and excellent disposal skills because we didnt want to pay him what he is worth. But hey we had a plethora of ruckmen in the wings didnt we and we've excelled in that department ever since. Why do you think we received two high draft picks for Ottens. Geelong couldnt believe their luck. Played a key role in their premiership win. As I said he was at an age where he was reaching his peak. If I was Ottens I'd take the Tiger offer as an insult too, incenivized or not.

you didn't want to pay him what he was worth, he wasn't deliverying at the time - you wanted to pay him on POTENTIAL

this is a key symptom of the Richmond disease, and for one I'm glad we didn't pay yet another player a monster paycheck on what they MIGHT become

We arent short sighted, when did Ottens reach his peak? you tell me? his first 2 years at geelong was sh!thouse. I remember geelong supporters bagging him!. He played a key role in their premiership win? how good was port on that day? how good was bradly vs the hawks the following year? Typical brad missing an important goal geelong needed against the hawks. When will Brad hit his peak? Yeah we are short sighted alright..

I don't agree with Goody overall but he was vital in the win over Collingwood in the prelim.

Agreed. Ottens has had plenty of injury woes but he was one of our best players at the time of his departure.
I was very disappointed when we traded him and whilst Simmonds gave us some value in return, I still wouldn't have done that trade personally. What's done is done.

Just gave you his stats in that year. He was performing, just not to the stardom place some seem to want out of every player on the list. What you're telling me is it was right to offer him a sizeable cut in his salary and expect him to just stay. This is not reality.

As for paying someone for potential. Yes it's about building up a team and being able to distinguish talent and potential. If you want to just pay players purely on past performance you can forget about building up a quality team because you won't have anyone. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but offloading Ottens in hindsight was a mistake, I think its hard to argue that.

Ok, so he plays 1 good final out of x number of games.

Who was collingwood's ruckman? Fraser?

How good is Fraser? you have seen how much crap he has copped(even from collingwood supporters). Going with what I was saying b4, big bad Brad did not want to stay at tigerland. We didnt want to give him the world for little return..

Yep 23 and 26 goals in his first 2 seasons at Geelong playing as a ruckman. Terrible.

do you think he was worth the $400-500k he was demanding back then? those stats are not the stats of a player who should be amongst the games best paid (remembering how big $500k was back then).

So what was the offer? I dont remember having that sort of information.

Yeah very terrible, he never played as a forward for them.. Yeah very terrible....

Do you really think richmond wanted to trade him? We had no choice!

If we hadn't screwed the picks we got for him would you think differently ?

Of course we had a choice. If we had no choice we wouldn't have received 2 high draft picks, he would have just found his way to the PSD.

Well we had to get something for him.. He didnt want to stay, we didnt want to lose him. You cant just let him go to psd for nothing. So did we have a choice really? we couldnt pay the world for him.
