Yes. I feel.for his mental state. What's he going to do if we make the GF again? He's already been to the zoo, there's nowhere else worth going in Sydney

Luna Park is pretty cool.

A lot here not showing a lot of sympathy for Lids but I do feel for him. A great Richmond player who a month ago was getting back to his best.

He made his own choices for sure but we should remember he was a terrific player for us for many years

Lids left when we were at a pretty low point to chase a flag, which he was more than entitled to do given the 10+ years of great service he gave to the club.

The fact it didn't work out is sometimes the way the cookie crumbles. I don't begrudge him for leaving and given his injury record the last few years at Tigerland, we did well to net a first rounder for him.

There's another zoo in Sydney, but it only has one dog. It's a Shih Tzu.

Absolutely - he was a joy to watch for many years including some pretty *smile* ones too.
Then when he left I was actually quite comfortable with the idea of seeing he and GWS doing well and winning a premiership.
I hated the original idea of him going to Geelong - but GWS I could accept.
Obviously at that stage I didn't consider we were within a bull's roar of a flag.
Will never forget the Prelim Final though and that last quarter when we had it won and then after the siren when poor old Lids look shattered.
Guess he was even more shattered a week later.
C'est la *smile* vie.

Lids is a strange case. He played a lot of good footy for us and I certainly wish him no ill, but he'll never sit in the top bracket of my favourite Tigers.

In fact, his career at the Tigers seems strangely irrelevant.

Reckon in years to come, Deledio's will be recognized as one of the incredibly unluckiest of careers.
It's not like we were considered any chance at all of winning the 2017 flag.
Brian Lake was 31 when he played his first game for Hawthorn and went from 11 indifferent seasons at the Bulldogs to three flags in three years.
Well may Brett say, "why not me?".

But then again ... had he not gone, would we have won it and would he have been in the team anyway?

Captured my view perfectly.

Wish Lids all the best with a speedy recovery. Many thought no ill for him to chase a premiership with GWS. Made sense. Not even RFC foresaw but hoped remotely for a premiership in 2017

Clubs always have these stories, Cooney and Griffens left Footscray when they were shitful only to win a flag 2 years later, Franklin left hawthorn for more money and hawthorn went on to win 3 flag.
Buckley the peanut left Brisbane when Aka, Leppa and Vossy were all there and they went on to win 3
*smile* happens, would we have won the flag if he stayed? He had 3 chances in 2013-2014-& 2015...,

Almost certainly not.
Lids leaving RFC was the sliding doors moment for him and for us.
As has been well discussed elsewhere - all of a sudden those other pieces fell into place and set us on our path to a flag.

I agree with all that, Lids was one of my favorites and I was happy for him to chase a flag after so many loyal years at the tigers. However I was a bit disappointed that he was so spiteful towards us winning the flag. It sounds like Lids was more shattered by us winning the Flag than the Adelaide Footy Club was. I'd be lying if I said it didn't lessen my opinion of him a little.

Broders he earned the right to be bitter and twisted over what might have been. Its our own decisions which really rankle the most when they blow up in our face - I mean who can you blame. Sad thing is he is unlikely (50:50 at best??) to have made the GF side had he been with us based on his fitness levels at the time.

Anyway be a fanboy for everything he has done for us including some smashing young prospects from the trade. Particularly given the recent news that the calf has gone again - out for 8-10 with a flavour of is that all she wrote for Lids.

I reckon the demons he was dealing with were due to his decision to leave his club. Landed at the giants and realised what a real footy club means. I haven't seen any evidence that he has embraced the giants.

He thought the grass was greener on the other side, but ended up in the orange autumn leaves of GWS.

Well said.

In hindsight, the main thing that’s changed for me is my perception of his leadership qualities and what he did for the culture.

I look at Rance and Jack as VCs and then I think back to little things I noticed about Brett in the same role. Like telling everyone on the Footy Show “Richmond don’t win without me” behind the scenes every week (which they’d repeat on the air). Does anyone else perceive greater sporting character flaws in hindsight? We can be easily blinded by talent.
