David C said:Deledio only went "missing" in the biggest of matches because our opposition knew he was the most dangerous player in the Richmond side and if he was blanketed there would be no one else capable of stepping up - the rest of the AFL knew this and it was almost the guaranteed method of ensuring a victory over Richmond if you could manage it.
In all of the recent finals we played our opponents were able to achieve it and the outcomes were there for all of us to see. In many of the matches against more evenly matched opposition over Deledio's career he was the difference between winning and losing.
If you want to evaluate Deledio's worth you simply look at every goal scoring opportunity we have and trace back the events on the field that led to that opportunity, a lot of the time you will see Deledio involved getting a good disposal to a team-mate or gaining possession through an interception or putting on a block at just the right time to allow someone time and space - in other words doing things that were real value to the team rather than racking up 40 possession stats where 75% are totally useless but impress fools who don't understand football.
Actually Deledio went missing in a lot of games and tagging him out of a game was not rocket science – you hit him hard a few times and the guy was not interested. In fact he went so far into his shell it became easier and easier for the opposition to neutralize his effectiveness. From the first day of his arrival to play for the Tigers I always thought he played soft; skilled but soft mentally. And as for leadership – give me a break.
He's gone; he has reasonable personal stats but he has not left any enduring mark on his time at the Tigers. At GWS he’ll be a bit player that might finish well what was started down field and that will suit him just fine. Next …..
