1st and 3rd I thought? Overs but not massive. Getting Geelongs rather than GWS 1st was a bonus
The deal was that we were going to get pick 13 in this years draft from GWS if the Gibbs deal went through. Because it fell through GWS gave next years Geelongs 1st rounder and threw in the bonus 3rd round pick as well. Whether we asked for it or they gave it to us out of the kindness of their heart not sure.
In an ideal world what would you have preferred this years 13 only or the combo picks we have next year?

He has been my favourite player for the better part of the last decade. He made the on field team a lot better. But AFL is a business now and I am glad after a day of thinking through it, that he got to a decent team and more importantly, RFC got full value out of the trade.

1 week ago Geelong wanted this:

Lids + 27 for Caddy + 37

We actually got this:

Caddy + 56 for 24 + 64
Geel 2017 1st Rd pick + GWS 2017 3rd round pick for Lids.

That is a massive win in anyone's book from what it was looking like. For the first time in a long time I can see a clear direction the club is heading in. Lowering the average age of the core group whilst loading up on decent picks for 2017 means that the club can have 1 last shot at it in 2017. Depending on how the year goes will determine what direction the club goes in. 2 x 2017 first rd picks means it could be either rebuild around the younger core group or go fishing for something very big. It has been a very good week for the club but still will be hard watching Lids in Orange from now on.

A win from the earlier scenario but not necessarily a win. The earlier scenario was as ridiculous as Carlton wanting two first round picks for Gibbs.

Biggest win for the whole trade period, we are not about to win a flag so trading Lids for approx picks 10 an 50 leaves us in a great spot at the end of next season.

That has to be the silliest comment ever. This is what could have happened. Doesn't matter what we thought of it at all. But if Lids was adamant that Geel was the place he wanted to be and they had the salary cap space then it would have been very close to happening (give or takes the picks).

I would also argue that a first rd and a 3rd rd pick for Lids is a clear win no matter how anyone looks at it.

Clearly suggests there are no gun academy kids set for 2017 draft.

This shows he couldn't get out of the club fast enough. But we'll continue to pretend all is fine.
Who cares. When Lids was drafted AFL was a club game. When free to air lost the primary broadcast rights it became a business. Everyone except supporters, water boys and maybe directors, are now in this for a career. They will treat the players in the way that best suits their own career, its only natural that the players will follow suit.

When a legend of the club leaves because he thinks he won't find success here, that is not a clear win.

That's actually a very sad loss.

This is what the AFL is now. Maximising value for players in trades prior to when they become FAs.

Cant have it both ways. Lids had opportunites of success and never got us over the line when needed the most. Cometh the time cometh the man!

For real? We,re blaming Lids for our lack of finals success? There's 21 other blokes that didn't get us over the line either btw.

Wait a sec. Read what I was replying to and take the comment in context. There was no blame associated at all.

I think its a clear win, and a sad loss of a champion player. Its all about the future. You want to dwell in the past go ahead.

Big contrast with the Gibbs sitch. We read the play, markets shift, Carlton didn't. 2 first rounders was fine as an opening bid, but to anchor to it was dumb, real dumb, what not to do in negotiations 101. By contrast We were flexible, reasonable, pursuasive and ultimately successful. The more I think about, DR hit this trade period for six.

FWIW I reckon Gibbs is worth say a 12 and a 28-35. Mid first and mid-to-late second. Dunno how close they came to that. Carlton could have got that done.

If the Gibbs to Adelaide deal had gone through we would have received pick 13 from GWS

I thought that was a better deal with us. I have since got comfortable with the deal we got given the flexibility it gives us around recruiting a couple of KPPs next year, nabbing Fyfe etc.

For the record, I still think SOS is a prick though regardless of the impact it has on us.

Correct.

We are getting closer and closer to the NFL model.

Thats how I see it also and actually exactly where I valued Gibbs too. A mid 1st plus a mid 2nd. Bear in mind we essentially got what Adelaide were offering for Gibbs for Lids.

On the other side (and to the darksiders who may not think we did well), Sydney got Pick 14 for Tom Mitchell who is what 23, we probably will end up with more than that for a 30 year old Lids. I love Lids as much as the next guy but thats a great deal for where our list is currently. Sure we have to wait for the picks but the flexibility this gives us is great. Our best hand in the draft for a lot of years. Whilst its easy to slag the club off for some of their decisions but this and the overall trade period were a big win for the Tiges and we should give credit where its due.

I am pleased with the deal we got. To get a first rounder who has the potential to give us 200+ high quality games provided we draft well plus a third rounder, for 50 odd games from Lids at the end of his career is a good result.

Not only does Lids get to finish off his career with some success, but we get a first rounder to rebuild (hopefully correctly this time).

disappointed he has gone - what a player - but I'm an unsentimental type and look forward to the Tiges in 2017 without Lids and someone laying the heaviest tackle they can on him.
