To be honest, I think Cooneys season is way over-rated and so is he as a footballer. Very lazy and gets all his kicks running around a kicker for a cheap handball recieve. I think Deledios way in front.
I agree and don't agree, Cooney started the year on fire and deserved the early plaudits.
He has tapered off a fair bit as the year has gone on and Deledio has had pretty much an equal year
What is scary is how close Deledio's stats are to the Brownlow favourite in Boomer Harvey

Deledio 226K 264H 490D 136M 14FF 11FA 43T 22G 8B
Harvey 299K 201H 500D 103M 19FF 11FA 45T 23G 17B

Very close, Lids marks it more, but Harvey uses it by foot more, the rest is pretty much dead even

good comparison to how Lids is actually improving his game Zero

2005
15.3 disposals per match, 3.9 marks per match, 14 goals

2006
18.8 disposals per match, 6.5 marks per match, 5 goals

2007
18.4 disposals per match, 5.4 marks per match, 21 goals

2008 (after Round 20)
24.5 disposals per match, 6.8 marks per match, 22 goals

He’s played all 20 games and is averaging 24.5 disposals per match, 6.8 marks per match and 4.2 inside-50 entries per match.

Deledio has racked up 25 or more disposals 12 times this season, he’s kicked 22 goals, and also has 16 goal assists to his credit.

He is ranked 12th in the competition for total disposals, 18th for total marks, and 19th for total inside-50 entries.

Not bad for a player who’s just 21 years and four months old, with less than 100 games experience at the game’s highest level (he’s played 82 games out of a possible 86 up to the end of Round 20, 2008).

I've thought for a while now that if we are going to improve at all then Deledio has to become one of the main ball winners. Thankfully, after not looking all that likely last year he really seems to be figuring it out and is starting to consistently win both first use and clearances.

Quite confident the lad still has a bit of improvement in him too. :)

The only guys in the top 20 for total disposals that are younger than Lids are are M.Murphy (18th) and the Cat's Selwood (19th).

Take the blinkers off & you'll see Cooney as a very good player.

To be 10th in clearances in the league says the above is plainly wrong.

cooney is a great player but that media darling ryan griffen is a shocking soft, front running, downhill skiing, squib. he doesn't like the hard stuff at all

Would be interesting though to compare effective disposal for Lids and Murphy....think Lids would be way ahead

Yet we're the ones who cop it for not taking Franklin and the Dogs are still desperate for a tall forward

the irony of it all is very amusing

I'd say Lids is having his break out year. And the scary thing is he has plenty of improvement left.

To quote the Plough "I want to be around to see Brett Delidio when is 25 and Cotchin has 100 games under his belt"

Now when you think about that prospect the mouth starts to water. ;D

His first 10 weeks were awesome, and wouldnt be surprised if he is in front of the brownlow at that point. But his past 6 weeks have been a really lazy effort, much like his team, maybe he's the berometer? Thats my opinion anyway.

Good post. Just can't understand the media's, particularly Millhouse Sheahan's, infatuation with Griffen. Lids is miles in front of him; all the while playing in a struggling side. Lids has been sensational this year.

It's a joke. The Bulldogs have been screaming out for a key forward since Kelvin Templeton left to go to Melbourne. They pass up Franklin for that softo Griffen but not one word is written about it  But RFC is lambasted for 4 years for taking Tambling :p

I guess it's simple. No club, apart from Collingwood, sells papers like RFC. No one really gives a *smile* about the Bulldogs.

In fairness to Millhouse he is one of the few that has continually given Deledio a wrap. His end of year top 50 will be interesting to see where the two players are ranked.
