Brandon Ellis

Umps didn't fall for it, Ellis did. He actually does it every week, tackles a player with head down assuming they took possession, it doesn't usually hurt because he isn't normally the last line of defence. Needs to tidy up this part of his game.

Hit the nail on the head, go back over Brandon's games and you see this occur quite often.

Did you have your eyes shut?
He tackled him without the ball, the umpire had no other option
Dumb dumb
He sh!t himself, instead of attacking the ball he went and tackled him, where he could've push/bump out of the contest

Umpire did have an option it was barely a holding tackle. Play on. Gia tapped the ball away just like KB used to bounce it away.

KR's right though, Brando should have had his eyes on the ball more.

Like Ellis very good player but he made some crucial blues...not going to go through them all but will say now he couldve marked that ball, he hesitated and preferred for the ball to drop that is unforgivable, ok the ball shouldn't have gone up their in the first place if not for shank Edwards pathetic handball straight to a doggies player which resulted in the ball coming in fast but being there at the ground and then watching the game on record and viewing that piece of play several times Ellis had the sit and shouldve marked it, he made the decision to not go for it then got sucked into tackling Gia the free was there but had he not panicked no guarantee Gia wouldve taken possession as Ellis and a fast approaching Astbury couldve layed a tackle on him....

I really like the kid but that was the biggest panic merchant play I've ever seen.. No composure what so ever... He actually did *smile* himself.. Not because of anything physical just because of the moment... As long as he learns from it I guess ..

What the stuffin hell was the kid doing one out at fullback in the last minute in the first place?

exactly right
what on earth was ellis coin at fullback on a wide open dogs forward line at that stage?
what happened to learning to flood their forward line when we are a few points up with a minute to go?

the dudest group of leaders in the comp

Every opposition coach knows he is a fantastic kick, excellent mark for his height, supremely fit, average hard ball/clearance player and slow as a turtle.
If he is anywhere near the last line of defense they will always look to isolate him in areas with space behind him. The last one was the 2nd goal in the game he got easily out run back towards the sticks.

Missed the game but saw the replay. It looked to me like an experienced wily old fox knowing how to suck a kid into making a silly mistake and giving away a free. Reminded me of a game about 20 years ago where Knighta turned a poor throw to him for a free from a Fitzroy kid into a 15 metre penalty at the end of a close game that allowed him to kick a goal after the siren for a win. Brandon will learn from that.

Simply it was a terrible blunder by Ellis to basically sling him to the ground without the ball. It was an immense pressure situation and we can focus on that actual instance (and yes I was livid at the time) but it was also the play at the other end of the ground, handball after handball culminating in Edwards giving a blind handball inboard straight to a Bulldog player that set up the situation. Ellis felt the wrath but he did get back well, he ensured the ball got to the ground well, he just made very bad judgement to tackle when he did.

Was pissed with Ellis at the time
He fell for the old three card trick but should have not been on Gia in the backline .
But is young and will learn from it with experience
The sh!ttruck effort in the first half peeved me more ::)

People are just asking, why was he there on his own, where was Newman? Chaplin?
And that was a free every day if the week. It was a kid that panicked and didn't know what to do.
The kid can play and it wasn't his fault we lost.
How many times have we not stacked the back line in that situation. The Footscray forward line was open all day and they had even more room in it in the last 2 minutes.
It's the Same way we lost to freo last year,
Stack the fkin back line

It's a good point zips and adds to the questions, where the hell was the backline? No-one beyond halfway. Forwards should have been pushing back and mids and backs another line back. That's lack of leadership. Wasn't Chaplin for example recruited for his leadership?

It was a free, but what really annoyed me was that 50 other times during the match our players were tackled without the all and it was play on. And don't get me started about that hack Wallis hanging off Cotch at every stoppage. It was so blatantly a free but wasn't paid except in the first few minutes of the game.

Chaplin has to learn to kick before he can be a leader.
It's not as he can stuck into some one else when he turns it over more times.
I never realised how bad his kicking was till yesterday.
That momentum killer in the 3rd qtr, was just *smile* house. Instead of a bomb into the fifty, he kicked a stab pass straight to a doggies player.
Another one going through the motions this year, looks slow and very lazy,
Top qualities for a leader

Yep I was right behind that one, could see who it was meant for. Unfortunately he forgot to take into account there was an opposition play smack in between. He needed to give it more air and it would have been perfect. Bad mistake.

Agree. Stacking the back line seems like a completely foreign concept to the club. If it was Sydney or hawthorn in that situation I guarantee you guys like goodes hodge mcveigh would be directing the team to flood the back 50. Instead we allow our slowest player to be completely isolated in the back half with zero support. Blind Freddy could have predicted what would happen as soon as the kick went that way.

But not to worry I guess we will 'learn' from it. It's not like it's ever happened before under hardwick's reign.

I haven't watched it again, but live it looked like he had no chance as he was hopelessly out of position. Ellis is the least of our worries.

Gia was smart - he lent back but tapped the ball forward, didn't even try to take possession, leaning back Ellis had no choice but to put hands on him, as soon as Gia felt that out went the arms. Milked it for all it's worth. Front position won it pure and simple.
