Brandon Ellis

Brandon and Dustin both left their kicking boots at home. Considering both are playing on the outside, their disposal just isn't near good enough compared to the best outside mids in the comp. Either tidy it up or move them on for better ball users.

Is far from the AA standard of last year.

As I recall, he stunk for the first few games last year until Hardwick sent him a message by starting him as sub and he turned it around from there. Maybe he needs another wake up call?

Move Dusty on for a better kicker?

His goal kicking is shithouse. And his I50 kicking today was often worse, particularly early in the game.

Brandon was hard at it today. His blue-collar work was good. His kicking improved over the course of the game but then he had a chance to score a simple goal to seal the match and check-sided the miss.

A bloke who is what, 10% from the field? Check-siding for crucial simple goals? The coach would be bleeding.

He's very fine overhead. Maybe we give him a few rests in a FP and just get hm used to kicking them. This yip thing is *smile*.

His kicking overall yesterday wasn't up to much, although I don't think this is a new issue. He did however manage to kick a goal. His kicking is an issue, because he gets so much of the ball. Was our top possession winner up to about the mid point of the 2nd quarter when I think Lids overtook him.

Good news is he's our leading tackler. I'd like to see him lay a shepherd, but that goes for most of the side.

Fadees off far too quickly and at the moment runs full tilt when he can get a kick and half pace the other way. Bludges. One of Scoop's lads from the draft but he must work both ways. His work rate to get a quick and present at the ball carrier is first class. Tackling at a good clip.

Yep, annoys the hell out of me. He makes so many contests as our second man and instead of shepherding he peels off to get an easy handball and leaves the ball winner under intense pressure. A couple of easy shepherds and we are away but it seems that racking up the stats is more important. Maybe I'd think differently if he was in my Dream Team :-\

I'm glad to see that others have noticed him game is not up to last years standard.

Watched him closely on Sunday and made a lot of errors.

Winning meant he escaped the spotlight - especially that missed open goal in the last.

Hopefully he improves in coming weeks :clap

Really good player for a second round pick.
Yer yer I know officially number15 , but add in players taken out before draft and he is in the 20, s meaning we didn't get a first round pick, , and afl smart enough to fool most.

Brandon has always been a bit vanilla, he does not have great acceleration nor top end speed, nor lateral athleticism to weave through traffic, nor is he much chop as a contested player/clearance player. What he is is an above average mark for his size, a penetrating kick, however not elite in accuracy, and a phenomenal gut runner. His ability to impact a game at AFL level is determined by two factors;
1) He has to be in top physical shape to gut run and find space cos' he needs space for his possessions to be effective and line breaking. If he does not already have space when the ball comes near him he does not have the ability to create it physically so his possessions are easily put under pressure and far less effective.
2) The opposition not putting an elite runner on him to shadow.

Opposition coaches are aware of his running abilities now and his penetrating kick hence his ability to be a large "metres gained" player so now they plan for him and it is pretty easy to plan for him right now when Lids is out/playing injured, one of our wingers in McIntosh is a rookie and has a lot to learn and we are playing one less ball moving HBF than usual (Batch, Newman Grimes etc. have all played this role and they do not need to be stopped so right now if you stop one of Ellis or Houli then it is a one man show and opposition coaches are definitely prioritizing Ellis over Houli.

What a difference it makes for Brandon's game when Lids comes back (and has to be a focus for the opposition), Newman goes out and is replaced on the back flank by Hunt who offers far more running ability. As a result, Ellis gets more space which allows his gut running ability to flourish. Awesome power running effort by Brandon... now hopefully the coaches don't take the 3rd attacking runner off the back flank... or Lids gets injured again.

Whilst he won the medal I can't see past the fact that he slaughtered the pill tonight wih terrible disposal at times and at other times looked ok?

Sat up in the nose bleed section today but saw the game unfold. This bloke runs from contest to contest. Deserves the BOG tonight.

I'm a fan have been since day one, actually before, I wanted him & thought he could be a onballer when many didn't.

But I wouldn't have in the best three tonight. Thought he burned a lot of ball by hand.
