His haircuts nearly as bad as dusty's, the boy has potential.

his haircut is worst than Dustys

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

Look, Martin is a special talent. I doubt that Lennon, particularly at his tender age, can get a haircut that offensive to play defensive football.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

I believe that with age, maturity and defensive skills, he can certainly cut it worse... But then I am a brightsider...

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

the knocks on him have been his leg speed and defensive efforts

on sunday showed that he has sufficient pace to play at the level

just needs to work on his tank and defensive efforts - if they improve, he will be a fine player

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

Lenny looked Tiger tough & hungry against Sainters so lets hope Dim Sim inks him in next week.

Hehe, funny that you called him in Lenny. When I saw his haircut I was thinking " tell me again about the rabbits, George"

Throw in Ivan & it's wild bunch, my 11 yr old daughter said what's the go with all their haircuts Dad, I responded look at the scoreboard sweetie, who cares!

Ben produced more in 1 game than Morris has nearly all year. Must be played

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

Great game from Lennon, it's the first time I've seen him shine like he did at the u/18 carnival, he just needs to get some miles into the legs and push up into the midfield.

Agree just needs to build his tank over the next couple of seasons

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

I'm a fan of Lennon's talent but not sure he'd get much of a touch against Hawthorn in a final at this point. Hopefully he stays in the side for a few weeks and we see how he goes against the Hawks in a H&A game.

As Dimma said, he competed 'ok', but much work to do in this and defensive area. Very immature currently. Not a fan of the hard stuff. But a natural who has a homing instinct for the goals. I hope he keeps his place and adjusts to what it takes.

At least we know the most important features are there, Lennon's got obvious talent. Only played the handful of games n stepped up n had an impact in the Dees game last year and again in the Saints game. Nothing wrong with a young kid taking a little time to learn the hard grunt work of AFL footy, another handful of games late this season n he'll learn more about the required work rate n grow an appetite for playing in front of fifty thousand instead of fifteen hundred on the weekend. The weekly pay increase won't hurt either.
Wouldn't surprise at all to see Ben have a bit of a growing up moment over summer, put in a big pre season n stake his claim to a regular spot in the ones, there's going to be spaces available if he wants one.

Pretty much how I saw Ben's game spook. His goals were opportunistic but we've seen that from Lloyd too. A lot get blinded by the flashy stuff but Hardwick rightly places a heavy emphasis on the defensive side of the game too and to date I think Lennon's been lacking in this area. Keep working on that and his willingness to push to more contests and we have a player.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

First quarter he showed signs and was getting well up the grownd to help out. I am resonably confident he will get used to the pace and be a decent player, but still think his best is about a year away..

True that Ben will need to keep working on defence and his tank and development generally.

But I disagree with you on teh flashy stuff bit. Ben got his goals because he read the play better than his opponent.

Goal 1 in position A and his opponent infringed.

Goal 2 was his best IMO. He saw lids collect on left half forward on the run and immediately ran to the dangerous spot in front of goal. while it looked he was all alone he only was about 1 - 2 metres goal side of his opponent when Lids actually gathered the ball.

Goal 3. Again read the kick position A - nearly took the mark and then showed a forward's skill in finishing, not flash.

Now I fear for Ben because Handbrake has this habit of coaching out the nouse and instinct of his forwards.

Ben will get mightily confused in future deciding whether to actually run to the right space to kick a goal or sag off and fill a spot in the defensive zone awaiting the rebound 50.

I witnessed a similar thing late last year and early this year with Beanie who kept doing all the Morris stuff and was still lambasted with unintelligible drivel from Bailey and Clarke.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

The best bit about Lennon's game on the weekend is that he showed considerable progress since he was last at AFL level. I know it was "only the saints", but there were signs that he actually has the talent and no-how to find the footy. I was encouraged by his performance.

Modern football is about team structure. Only those that can be a cog in machine get the chance to use their instinct. Individual brilliance is not enough at AFL level. You must be well balanced in many aspects.

Tank is a classic, but only one of the many ingredients you must have in your tool kit to play at the elite level.

With the equalisation of the clubs being the objective of the AFL, no longer can a side be full of enough individual brilliance to overcome the opponent.

Once a side develops an elite structure, then the players individual natural talent kicks in. Dusty is a prime example of this. To be an a professional footballer you must improve the weeker elements of your game.

The development of players has been one of the hardnuts strenght's. Look back over some of the whipping that has been dished out to the following...

Jacko
kingee
Rance
Grimmes
Houli
Grigg
Sheds

All improved massively under the hardnut.

Many typed pages n pages about Jack being let out of the goal square, a usual PRE meltdown, but now is playing his best footy ever, Carey and Brownie have heaped praise on him.

It sounds like you watch a load of VFL footy. But AFL is a big step up. The players need to be developed to thrive. The hardnut maybe the first coach we have had in the modern era that has been capable of achieving this.
