Until we realised that he is slow and soft. Having watched him a bit in the VFL he reminds of the junior team I coach where the kids who are scared put in token efforts at a contest in the hope that people will think they are cracking in. The giveaways are going to ground at the first instance and "putting a hand where a body should go" this is Ben and at his age I can't see it changing. Other teams will know it and target him physically.

No, we have always been at war with Lennon.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

Geez people have really turned on him. I reckon he'll show his value next time he gets a shot in the seniors, which could (should) be on Sunday.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

The kid is getting ambition confused with ability..........good luck to him but has a long way to go to make it from what he has shown to date

I think he will prove a lot of people wrong on here. Not everyone develops at the same rate.

Agree.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

The article doesn't mention him looking elsewhere. It seems to me that his worth is currently at its lowest, so why sign a contract now when there's still footy he can play to bump up his value?

Lowest? That he hasn't had much exposed senior form may lead some to think he has potential.
I hope Ben goes on to be a great player but he's been decidedly underwhelming so far in his first 2 seasons.

It's quite an indictment on him that three raw draftees went straight past him this year.

That's exactly how I see it. Right now the club would probably be offering one year. If he plays some good football he may get more security.

He's had 2 injury interrupted preseason's .
So did Corey Ellis in his first one, yet he got right past Ben and although it's early days, looks to have superior skills. Having said that, I would like to see Ben get more opportunity at senior level.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

Talented Richmond youngster Ben Lennon has put a positive spin on a season that, so far, has netted him just one senior game.

The Tigers’ first pick (No. 12 overall) in the 2013 National Draft, played in the Round 5 loss to Geelong at the MCG and has spent the rest of the season at VFL level.

He’s adapted extremely well to a new role as a wingman in recent weeks, and is pressing strongly for a senior recall.

$5 from every adult ticket sold to Sunday's match with St Kilda will be donated to the Maddie Riewoldt Vision Foundation.

“I feel like I’ve learned a lot this year and I’m still developing,” Lennon said on ‘Talking Tigers’.

“Obviously, it’s frustrating not playing in the ‘ones’, but it’s more of a journey than a sprint, so I’ve just got to keep on working on my deficiencies and hopefully get in the seniors.

“I’ve been all right the last couple of weeks, learning the role as a wingman . . . just trying to nail the role more so than anything and then ball will come.

“The coach wants the ball in my hands as much as possible, so just trying to get as much of it as I can, running a lot more, and getting into the defensive half as well . . . I’ve got to try and play my role as best I can and run the right patterns and all that sort of thing as well.

Lennon, who turned 20 early this month, is hoping his growing versatility will help him regain a place in Richmond’s main line-up.

“I have had stints down the backline and the forward line, so playing in the midfield and on the wing will add another string to my bow,” he said.

“It’s a little bit frustrating at times being thrown in different positions.

“You sort of feel like you’ve nailed one and then next minute you’re back in the backline or something like that. But I think, looking back, it’s been really good for me and it’s only going to hold me in good stead . . .

“I know that if I get some opportunity, I’ll be able to play at the level. But I’ve just got to play some good footy in the VFL and earn my spot.

“I’ve just got to keep telling myself that I’m a good player and can play at the level . . .”

I'll give you Ellis but even he is on potential not really a ton of exposed from.

Which of Menadue (single figure possession games), Drummond (1 good game at VFL level) Butler or Mckenzie have gone past him.

Don't confuse the vagaries of RFC selection with actual ability or form.

Our rookies Short and Casragna have outperformed most of our ND picks.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

needs a bit of mongrel in him, some intensity and ferocity in his play. skills is not enough to cut it at the elite - AFL level.

They had a tape of his highlights from his game a couple of weeks ago on the RFC site.

I was pleasantly surprised by his intensity in that clip.

He is a lovely contested mark and a lovely kick. I see no reason we cant find a spot for him up forward or on a wing despite questions on his pace.

Nailed it. Our 2014 draftees have been given a taste of it this year, just as Lennon was last year despite perhaps not earning it. I'd expect that they would be made to earn games the same way Lennon has this year next season.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

We really need Ben and a few others to make it as players because there are ability and injury doubts on the careers of Lennon, McDonough, Elton, Gordon, Lloyd, Petterd, Dea, Foley, Knights, Conca, Lambert, Newman, Morris and Astbury.
