Ben Lennon

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

Sweet hands and lovely kick. Just screams permanent half forward. But Morris.

Get's a game. gets a odd matchup on Harry Taylor. Get's subbed.

More than likely gets dropped to play a attacking role in the VFL.

Comes back to the AFL to play a defensive role. Rinse, wash, repeat.
Its a constant theme. McDonough plays forward and midfield in the VFL. Comes into the seniors and plays back. Arnot plays midfield in VFL. Come into the seniors and plays forward.

I'm not sure what the coaches are expecting to happen. If a player is all of a sudden playing in a foreign position, how can it be expected that they can adjust immediately when stepping up? I thought the point of us having control over our VFL side was to play players in the positions we wanted them to so that they were ready when called upon. Doesnt seem to be what is occurring.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

The young fella has the goods and the skills. Needs to be developed in the right manner and played in positions that utilise his skills (elite kicking and strong marking). Didn't have an impact today, which will most likely mean he will be dropped. That said, he is worth persevering with because once he finds his rhythm he will be a beauty.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

I think pace is a non issue. The other skills are elite.

That's true. McDonough was really good mid- forward today

baffles me why morris is played as a forward every week when mcdonough looks there times the players..

lennon had no hope today he why the ball was coming in....

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

Needs to spend more time getting the ball and less time being a strawberry picker or it'll be something to get hung about.

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

absent today but needs a run of games

Not just pace, but agility and has a slow first two steps.

Know leysy has been swinging against the tide in his criticism, but they are not good combinations of trademarks to lack when you stand 188cm.

Nah I'm with you a bit. He just looks sloooow and not sure about his ball winning ability or endurance. Still, hope he gets a good block of games so he can show something.

Hmmm, so Frank has screwed us again?

Re: Welcome to tiger land Ben Lennon

My biggest issue with him is he doesn't win the ball.

He should model his game on Jack Gunston.

He has no choice but to play inside. Uncontested possessions for another are contested possessions for Lennon. Or, no possessions at all. He sure aint taking the competition by storm.

This. old mate.

The task for him will be hard though. He's been a glamour junior who isn't accustomed to blue collar work.

He'll need to, lest find himself back at Macleod.

Really good insight. One thing I've learned from the club's disappointing performances this season is I feel like I know so little about football. Four years of consistent progress lulled me into a false sense of optimism in my judgments, and now I'm starting to realise there are a number of truths regarding player types and the roles it allows them to play. Like Leysy and yourself point out, Lennon's type of slowness is most telling over his first two steps (the exact opposite to Shane Edwards' slowness), and what should be beautiful UPs at a lower level are pressured contests at AFL level. To compensate, he needs to improve his inside game or find more space. I suppose half back has more space than half forward, which is where he played reasonably well in the NAB Challenge. Anyway, there's been some pretty astute player predictions in some of these threads.

All the brighty students are having the same epiphany, Chimpa. Leysy is all over this. He's got perspective. He's opened my eyes to another problem and it's a big one. WE're not just too slow and lacking in talent - we're scrawny.
