Rioli was a bolter, in fact we'd settled on Ah Chee only to be trumped by GC at the last minute. Then there's the two bids we placed before calling out Dan's number. It was a brave pick but the methodology was sound - athlete & upside without a huge amount of exposed form. Very un-Frank like but a turn for the better.

thats because it wasnt franks decision.

He was overulled.

Not playing in a forward line when you don't have power to create space or endurance to find it on long runs.
Still think his only chance at the moment is as a back flanker who takes kick outs and is the guy you try to work the ball through but after training all summer in the forward line it will be Punt Road for him most likely.

Interesting.
Your comment made me realise that I don't remember Lennon doing his time in the backline as Hardwick has so many other youngsters do.

He has probably played 60% half forward and 40% half back in the VFL over the last 2 years from what i have seen.

No one had Rioli as our first pick except for 1 or 2 footballing doyens.

You were the Rioli man, owe you one of these if you come to Chiangers:

Content to give him a pass on Sat. Been on media street (at least on rfc website) and maybe just put too much pressure on himself. Another poor one this week won't be good.

I'm giving him a chance.

When you're down and out as part of a greater team, things can turn around with hard work both within and with the help of others.

Good luck Ben, be a part of the team!

He is a prime example of a player that is over coached.
He is not allowed to run to the real dangerous hotspots to receive the ball as he would be getting in Jack's way.
Lennon is an instinctive footballer and unfortunately our coach does not encourage this as much as he should.
A game plan is a game plan BUT in the heat of the battle sometimes you need to take the bull by the horns and go with your gut feel.
I'm not sure if certain players, including Lennon, are allowed to do this.
By strictly following team rules you may have games where you appear to be totally ineffective. Don't blame the player in these circumstances.

This. He's being instructed to apply constant defensive pressure and is sacrificing his offensive game. Hardwick is the worst coach for him. Some of his defensive pressure was quite good but overall he doesn't have the pace to be great defensively and as a result was quite poor. He'd be more effective as an offensive weapon with his leading marking and kicking but he spent the game chasing arse.

Ben just doens't have the weapons for AFL.

He is slow...he runs very heavy legged, this is something a sprint coach could change but it would take more than a few weeks in his offseason.
Not a great leap
Average hands but with his role and other limitations he needs to have outstanding hands
Poor endurance by AFL standards
Doesn't really relish the contest

I am hoping that he does show something but deep down I know he is a bust.

His strengths are marking and kicking. Hardwick doesn't know how to use these. Hopefully the other coaches can.

Thanks Caesar.
I don't see much VFL.

Take your blinkers of H. Why recruit a player that is soft, lazy and slow in the first place?

He'd have been a star at Jack in the Pack.

probably wouldve been able to supplement his income with Don small goods and Ballantyne Choccys back in WW of Sport days too.
