Cheers Benny.

Sounds like a nice clean formula Benny, but I don't think it's very easily executed. Different players come up at different times...it's often said and I think most believe....kids need a bit of a run, to get their confidence up and be able to get used to the pace/style of AFL. Being in for a few games, then dropped is exactly what hurts them.

Shouldn't we be rewarding players on merit and looking at long term development? Rather than have our future development rotate around a 31yr old?

We will still be rewarding players on merit. There are 22 positions up for grabs and if you consistently play well for Coburg you will get called up. Ben will increase the likelihood that some of these younger players will push for selection. He improves their chances by making them better players and if that means they don't get an arm chair ride because they're young (like we were forced to do in the past) then it means we've finally found depth and a winning culture.

We can't be treating our team like it is 2006 when everyone under 21 who had two legs was given a game.

Tambling was given about 30 games experience in his first two years, but was it to his advantage?

Would he have benefited just as much from getting 25 games with Ben Cousins pushing him and giving him advice over those first two years?

Now that we are building depth good players are going to miss out.

Cousins or no Cousins, Polo/Hislop/Thomson still have Coughlan/Tambling/Collins/Edwards/Jackson etc, etc, etc to challenge for a spot.

Is your #1 worry about Cousins that he will make it harder for the kids to get a game?

If so, then you need to accept the reality of having true depth - get used to it because it's here to stay!!

Perhaps he won't ToO. But perhaps he will.
The guy has been very durable & has only had a couple of hammy issues throughout his career. (In his last season)

Sure but..
Kurtzy makes a very valid point on another thread.

Where's the training been?
Why hasn't he been getting some run into his legs with another football club?
How bad ARE the hamstrings?

Yes his training regimes at his peak were legendary but it also has to be remembered that his commitment to training wavered in his final season at WC just before his contract was torn up. Then the hammy blew out.
Yes maybe that was at the peak of his addiction but there's little doubt his commitment to the game and training had wavered at that point.

I hope he gets back to somewhere near his best but I am not expecting it and I think many are jumping the gun that he will. We always like to remember former champs at their best but reality often ends up being something less when they are getting closer to the end than the beginning. He's missed a lot of football in two years.

I just hope if we pick him up he can be a good contributor to the team and stay out of trouble as opposed to the match winner we all like to remember.

No.

You're barking up the wrong tree with me.

I'm STILL trying to determine my starting 22 for Round 1. Depth is necessary and a good thing.

Having kids contend against each other for spots is a good thing, I couldn't care less if we had 20 kids vying for the same spot.

What does bother me is having a 20yr old kid, capable of kicking down the door but being told "Do not Disturb - Cousins is sleeping"

True depth as you put it Benny, caters for the future, not just the present or starting 22.

I respect the fact you believe this Benny, but many people I have seen jumping on the Benny-Mobile I have also seen complaining already about kids not getting opportunities based on their VFL form.

I find it intriguing they don't comprehend this will be even harder with a "star player twilighter" in the side.

Surely it caters for both. It may be the case having Cousins around provides for a better future for some of these peripherals if they see first hand what it takes to be the best.

If he's on song, Cousins will show them that.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

if we do recruit him lets try and get a 100 games out of him for future development

Be very interesting to see what happens if Cousins doesn't perform to the level many here are expecting.
Won't take long for some to change their tune no doubt.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

It's not a big issue if one kid has to work a bit harder to get a game.

He needs 4 good games for Coburg instead of 3, then when he's rewarded he has a champion midfield to play with. Does it make a difference whether Bowden or Moore was responsible for him not getting a game?

If we're so worried about the 30yo's comprimising the youngsters' development then Johnson, Bowden and even Brown can all go before Cousins.

I'm expecting Bowden and Johnson to retire next year.

In 2010 it will be Richo, Brown, Simmonds and Cousins (and they won't all play 22 injury-free games).

The rest will be 27 and under.

Edit: This obsession with youth has really gone too far for some people. The day has come where supporters would rather a long shot kid with poor skills over a champion talent of the game!

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

This was the Rock the World Story. That was mentioned about july of this year
Sheedy , if this comes off has been the mastermind behind it.
Walks up to Cameron at a public function and demands from him the reasons as to why Cousins shouldnt be taken,Sheedy then walks into Wallace`s office and basically says"if you dont draft cousins, i will mkae sure i have your job next year", people might think this far fetched , but trust me its not

like i have always said, richmond has played the game very well, waited and lurked, now collingoowd is making noise why because htey look like idiots( which they are anyhow)

my only concern , and thats what some other posters are saying is what happens if the teams ahead of us decide to go after him.I know carlton has commited to Johnstone?? but whats the guarnetee they do commit.
i hope for all of us tiger supporters that we manage to get cousins.it will be great for the club,
all the people that are negative about it, thats your opion and you are entilled to it, but just have a look at all the intrest it has generated in the richmond football club, i am sure that australia wide we will be the most talked about club for the next week, and this is a good thing for us
the yellow and black is starting to ROAR

Why we be worried about what we get out of effectively the last player taken in the Draft. Anything is a bonus. Who do you think we will get more out of, RBR or Gourdis?

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

I find it ironic that all these other clubs have done their 'due diligence' and thoroughly investigated the possibility of taking Cousins, only to turn around and say that the sponsors aren't happy and we're pulling out of the race. Richmond on the other hand, who don't have a major sponsor are looking like taking their chances with Cousins. Can you imagine the size of the media contingent which will be at Punt Road the day he pulls on the Richmond training jumper for the first time, and will follow his every move throughout the pre-season and beyond. You watch the sponsors start queing up then to have their company logo represented on the training gear, not to mention the spike in membership that such a blanket coverage will generate. Sheedy, you are a genius and its great to finally have you back where you belong.
