Well here's one dohy old son. I for one do not want us to draft Cousins & have stated that in another earlier post. The reasons are obvious imo.
Having said that, if we do draft him I will not be denigrating him as others might do, I will wish him good luck & support him as I would any other player who plays for the the Mighty Tiges.

great to hear that you support the club in their decision. Personally, i was sitting on the fence, but now that its a possibility, lets go for it! Time to put RFC back in the forefront of opposition supporters minds.

Do you think he can get back to his best though?
A few champs over recent years have made comebacks and ended up a shadow of their former selves.

I hope you are correct but I think many tend to look back at a footballers best in the hope that they can produce it forever. Unfortunately it rarely happens that way.

We've all seen the photoshop job of benny in full flight today, but let me remind you, this was Benny last time he was on the field..

Hammy_L.jpg

The argument could easily be made that even at 80% he'd still be in our top half dozen but I think there might be some disappointed punters out there expecting him to reproduce the glory days.

Perhaps he won't ToO. But perhaps he will.
The guy has been very durable & has only had a couple of hammy issues throughout his career. (In his last season)

Let leysy remind you of someone else with hammy troubles at an older age than Ben. There's no guarantees but things on that front can turn around.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

I have an answer to a question DD seems to keep asking (haven't read th elast 3 pages because I wanted to reply before I forget!)

Ben Cousins will slow down the development a Polo, Hilsop, Collins, Thomson etc, how do you justify this?

I believe there is a way to compensate for this.

In effect, Ben playing 22 games is like having Dean Polo miss 22 games.

To lessen the blow of missing 22 games for one of our kids, we will share the load over 5-6 young midfielders.

They will miss 3-4 games of experience each - that is the cost.

To compensate - Ben Cousins running at full flight with them for 3 years on the training track, sharing his immense football knowledge, shouting out encouragement like only HE can and giving these young midfielders a wealth of experience that they would NEVER get from 3 or 4 games of football.

Ben Cousins will impart more wisdom and experience than what he will take away - and by a considerable margin.

Any company who is thinking about sponsoring the Tigers should be contacting Steven Wright asap. This is going to get even bigger especially come Monday evening if and when the AFL grant the Tigers permission to place Polak on the rookie list. The sight of Ben Cousins wearing a Richmond jumper will be splashed around all over the country. One things for sure good ol' Richard Smith is loving the exposure at the moment.

hey black adder, check out todays front pages? yes , Ol' *smile* loves a bit of exposure. Marketing Genius. Maybe he's promised to double Richmonds sponsorship deal if we provide him with a weeks worth of advertising?

Even more interesting when both brissys and saints pursual of cousins was halted by their major sponsors, apparently.

Although isn't *smile* the self proclaimed champion of the aussie battler? , the king of the fair go? the shining Knight of the second chance? Defender of David Hicks? Yes he is!!!!!!!!

And thats why I'm off to dicks to get myself enough co-ax cable to re-wire the hole house, so I dont miss any of cuzz tearin it up in 2009 . I want the Tigers to be feared again- end of story.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Well done to the Tigers.
We wanted 300K extra off our one and only Sponsor.*smile* Smith.
*smile* insisted to hand over the extra cash he wanted a bit more exposure.
Enter kevin Sheedy
Sheeds starts the ball rolling a few weeks ago at the Tom Hafey function by drilling Craig Cameron in public[Amongst the media] to get Cousins.
He then gives few of his media mates a ring a day before Wallace is due to go on SEN.Word gets out that we are exploring ways to get Benny on to the mature Rookie list.SEN take the bait and drill Terry on the issue.
By now the media have a watch this space feeling about it.
The finishing result will have its conclusion come Tuesday Morning when we dont read out Ben,s name.
*smile* is happy with FREE front page exposure and 6pm timeslot on the electric media.
*smile* hands over 300K
Well done to the Tigers for playing the media to great effect.

tw Ben, great to meet you and we would love to have you at Tigerland, but on one condition?
bc great Terry I will do anything to play again - what is the condition?
tw well our feral supporters are a bit concerned with your after hours habits so we have to stipulate that you will be staying with one of our most loyal supporters who will keep a 24/7 watch over you to help you.
bc yeah terry no problem with that
tw right he is a grumpy old #@&^%$ but he has a good heart his name is Claw and if you screw up I have to warn you that he will post it immediately on PRE and you will be history!!
bc Terry the only thing I fear is the Roth of Claw and I promise to do the right thing.....

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Ben Cousins in full flight on the football arena is great however the fact is it is almost common knowledge that he is still flying like an eagle off the field. Not what we need.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Well Kennett and Hawthorn are certainly behind us. In fact, Kennett's comments were so positive about us taking Cousins that I thought he was
having a quiet dig at Quagmire.

only 18 what about when injury hits or they are banned after 3mths because they failed a hair sample test.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Kennett is the only man in football who does not need artificial forms to make him a raving lunatic.

Having said that, characters like him with passion are good for the game.

Well this is partly what I meant by the whole, breeding success thing I spoke of earlier.

You articulate it a bit more deeper though, beyond just winning games to something more profound.

Hmmmmm...begrudgingly give you that. *grumbles* Good point.

I'm just at the edge Leysy, just at the precipice of taking the Cousins plunge. Leave me alone! :hihi

Since you've reared your head Leysy...your point aside, in terms of the development of our youth and players like your love child Collins...what think ye of having such a mature aged midfield running around blocking development of kids?

Those fortunate enough to play with him...sure...but...what of those busting a guy you watch in the VFL and complain about not getting enough opportunity as it is?

Expect to see more "Meyers".

Salient point & it may have merit.

Leysy doesn't share as many concerns as yourself on the lack of development of our midfield for a few reasons -

- Johnson's been mentioned a lot, but won't play midfield ILO. He'll play a role similar to Campbell in his last season. Almost as a defensive "leadup" forward, ala his role on Luke Hodge 2nd time round. Picking his match, playing a decoy at times & getting involved at stoppages in his area. Be very suprised if he spends much time running through the midfield coalface.

- The game continues to go this way more than ever, but every team needs minimum 8 players rolling through the centre square alone. How many times in recent seasons have we seen us get run over when Tuck & Foley have either got tired or havent been employed in the middle. Too many to mention. There's plenty of space for newcomers & maybe oldcomers to come forward.

- Foley, Tuck, Lids, Chimp are our only definates. We need at least 4 more possibly 6. Hislop, Thompson, Collins, Connors, Polo, Jackson, Tambling are thrown up as in the mix. The last 3 leysy doesn't believe will cut it in an elite side as midfielders. We're still shy.

- As for Collins, maybe not straight away, but he should bound ahead of the above limited players like Polo, Jackson & Tambling so far as midfield roles go. If he can't, well he's not good enough to be part of the 8 or so midfielders that a top side employs. That being the case he's not good enough to take us forward.

By leysy's reckoning only Cousins & Tuck will be looking to retire in the next 5 seasons. ILO The speed & rotations of the game means plenty will get the chance for midfield exposure if good enough.

Cheers Benny.

Sounds like a nice clean formula Benny, but I don't think it's very easily executed. Different players come up at different times...it's often said and I think most believe....kids need a bit of a run, to get their confidence up and be able to get used to the pace/style of AFL. Being in for a few games, then dropped is exactly what hurts them.

Shouldn't we be rewarding players on merit and looking at long term development? Rather than have our future development rotate around a 31yr old?

its typical tiggyturnthetoesupitis. shocking disease affects the brain in a way that nothing is ever seen thru to the end. jumping ship or continually looking for easy ways out is another serious condition. one must have intestinal fortitude to resist it.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

not many times i am 100 per cent behind claw's reasoning but this is one of those rare moments.

Do not get caught up in the hype...adopt a long term approach.

Just as a sideline......no news up here in nq but has there been any official comment at all from the RFC that they are entertaining the idea of signing cousins.???
