Ben Cousins a Tiger (Merged)

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Just logged on. Great news. Looks like the Powers that be at Richmond have pulled off a masterstroke leaving the rest of the clubs floundering. Brings back memories of the off field tigers under the late great G Richmond. When the other clubs start bleating about us we know we are on the right track. Fear and envy of the tigers is the way to go. Off field success breeds on field success. Go tiges.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Wow.

I go out for the night, get back in and find the world has turned on it's ear.

The mind boggles.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Holy cow!

The jury is still out for me.

A great decision...if he stays clean, fit and blitzes.

Another shortsighted and daft decision by the RFC...if he doesn't do any of the above.

Should be a hell of a ride, regardless.

Does anyone have an absolute confirmation that this needs all 15 other clubs unanimous approval or can the AFL commission make this decision in our favour even if Collingwood and St Kilda are against it?
According to the report on the AFL website, the 15 clubs are being asked for their "views" prior to the commision's vote on monday.
So it would appear based on that that the clubs have no real say at all and it certainly doesn't have to be unanimous

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

I can't help but feel that if the proposed Polak move is to allow RFC to draft Cousins, then this has been a pretty late change of heart. The suggestions that leaving it late (last pick preseason draft) is to throw off other suitors doesn't make sense to me because why wouldn't he have been taken with pick 70 if he had been wanted. This makes me think it's more likely we are looking for a 2nd junior to replace Polak. (Hopefully it's not Yze, Davis, etc)

I personally would love the club to take a risk on Cousins. No risk, no reward. We've been garbage for 30 years, have got a lot inexperienced players on the rise, and now can consider taking Cousins versus virtually every player overlooked after 70-80 picks in National Draft. Unless there is a junior gem that has been discovered in last couple of weeks, then get Ben i say, regardless of Polak relegation.

Regarding Polak move, it would have been `fairer' to have applied before the National Draft, so the timing is curious. Having said that, I wouldn't think getting 2 extra weeks to consider a 2nd preseason pick of the remaining potential draftees, could possibly give us too much of an advantage.

Geez....I just logged on....I can't believe this is happening! But jeez, what do we have to lose....Cuz turns Deledio, Chimpy and Whitey into coke fiends, we make 2 Grand Finals in a row against Carl, they win the first by 4 points, we win the next by 1,....it'll be fun!
Seriously, I think our young core leaders have their heads too well screwed on to be influenced by Cuz...as long as he turns up to training and gets his regulation 28 touches, I'm in.
Oh yeah, and if the AFL really don't want Cuz playing, why let Richmond put Polak on the rookie list? The League has along history of ignoring precedents and making stuff up as they go.

Sweet post TTT.

Richmond clears way for Ben Cousins

RICHMOND could give Ben Cousins a lifeline to play in the AFL again.

Just when it seemed all over, the Tigers last night emerged as potential saviours.

They are pushing for an extra selection at Tuesday's pre-season draft, which may be the fallen Brownlow medallist's last chance for 2009.

If the AFL agrees to Richmond's request to place injured defender Graham Polak on the rookie list - with Polak's approval - the Tigers will get an extra pick: the seventh and last in the pre-season draft.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace told the Herald Sun last night: "I can confirm an application has been lodged . . . to place Graham Polak on the rookie list, but we can't say anything else because we can't pre-empt what the AFL Commission will or won't do."

Wallace would not comment on 30-year-old Cousins, but sources say he is warming to the idea of giving him the chance to persuade the Tigers he is worth the risk.

Polak, who was seriously injured when hit by a tram in September, is believed to have accepted that his chances of playing next year are slim.

He is believed to have encouraged the Tigers' football department to act in the best interests of the club.

Richmond's attitude to Cousins will be decided as soon as the AFL responds.

If the commission agrees to the request - as it did in the case of Essendon's Adam Ramanauskas while he recovered from cancer - the Tigers look certain to explore the idea of giving the former West Coast star a chance.

It would be a huge risk, one none of the other 15 clubs is prepared to take, but the potential upside is also huge.

Cousins would have to meet stringent conditions but, given his position, he can be expected to gleefully agree.

The 2005 Brownlow medallist and recovering drug addict couldn't expect more than a one-year contract on modest money, but the terms and conditions have become secondary since he faced the reality his career might be over.

Despite reports of divisions on Cousins at Punt Rd, the lure of a one-time top-10 player has to be enticing for a club that finished ninth this year.

The possibility of grabbing Cousins surfaced during recent days as Richmond and Polak came to the realisation his recovery was going to take longer than hoped.

I agree with this line,

"It would be a huge risk, one none of the other 15 clubs is prepared to take, but the potential upside is also huge."

Just depends , do we want to roll the dice and take the punt,

I'm for it .

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

For every recovering alcoholic, gambler, substance abuser, tobacco addict, and anyone with an addiction to anything that can be deemed as bad...

Ben Cousins carries the hopes for all recovering addicts of anything. He will be the pinup for anyone who has had to deal with the stigmas of a community that is to quick to condemn. He deserves the opportunity to at least prove that there are opportunities for those recovering from an addiction. Hands up if your not addicted to something, sometime in your life... has it ended your career?

Cousins will be just as risky as the Hislop pick up... but also just as exciting. They both have something to prove, have everything to lose, can both play and add to our expectations of a winning culture. Upside for both these players is worthy of the risk...

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

RFC could've taken Cuz at 70 in the ND! When did they test or assess Polak to decide this move. It's a bit of a mess really, should've tested Polak prior to going into the ND, then decide to draft Cuz.
All is good in hindsight, but we are faced with an enormous decision to take a player that will impact the playing group, the supporters, sponsors etc etc... the Cuz 'experiment' will be a positive all round if he's not positive!

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Once the public stigma is removed, watch Carlton swoop. He now has to get through to pick 6 or 7.

They have committed to Chris Johnson so won't take Cousins.
