Ben Cousins a Tiger (Merged)

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

If they allow Polak onto the rookie list it means we have one extra spot, who we use it on is our business. And as if the AFL will disallow it. There will be verification from his neuro surgeon, club doctor about his health and rehab, notes from the club fitness guys and coaches stating that while he is improving, he is still nowhere near playing competitive footy again, and finally a note from Polak himself stating that while he hoped for the best he has finally succumbed to his injuries and should be allowed to go back to the rookie list to continue his rehab.

On Cuzz, GET HIM. There is a sign outside the players race that says "Fortune favours the brave". Tigers, it is time to be brave.

That is compelling evidence. When you read it like that, the AFL would be hard pressed not to allow us to do it.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

the way i see it, we've got nothing to lose with this.

1st of all, we get positive PR for trying to give cousins another chance also for caring for polak.

if the deal is approved then great, we pick up a brownlow medallist to strengthen our midfield and show our kids the dedication needed to become an elite player.

if the clubs (ie eddiewood) veto it, then they sorta come out looking like the bad guys....sure we won't get to pick up cousins, but let's face it, 24 hours ago, none of us expected us to get him, so nothing's really changed.

not to add to the media exposure we'd get for having cousins, would be great for membership and sponsors.

nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Don't underestimate the influence one K Johnson has on the playing group. Remember the article about Lids when he talked about how disappointed Sugar was with him at one point....remember the article about Cotch, Connors and Jack doing the fitness work during their holidays. It sounds to me like the culture down at tigerland is pretty good at the moment.

Every player knows what they'd be getting if we recruited Cousins, and I believe that every player would be doing everything they could to keep him off the gear, rather than being influenced by him to get on it. The strict testing that he's going to have to face will work in our favour. He'll be caught before he can influence others.

Those punters who are concerned about his influence on our young kids might just be under-estimating our players' characters.

Having said all that, if we were to pick him up, I'd love a clause in the contract that requires him to get rid of Ricky Nixon. He is an absolute merchant banker and has done Cousins way more harm than good.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Did anybody else hear on nova Sydney this morning that we making a late bid of him?

Serious??

Yeah I logged on here straight away checking to see if it was anywhere else in the news. I thought that might be why all the Cousins threads were near the top of the list.

Sydney is the last place to hear football news though so I was looking for more info.

Once the public stigma is removed, watch Carlton swoop. He now has to get through to pick 6 or 7.
This is how it will pan out.
AFL facing prospect of legal action from the Cousins camp due to the strict testing put in place.
AFL sits waits and looks at who takes who in the drafts.Cousins still around no one has picked him up.Pies dropp off mainly due to their own player problems( shaw, didak)
Saints hmmm, we have Gardner here so they drop off
Brisbane drop off because AFL will find it hard to constanlty fly some one up to test cousins or for them to put a tag on him also Vossy young coach might not be able to control him
Port Adelaide, as above AFL will find it hard to have a tad and montori him 24/7, plus Chocco is a loose cannon anyhow
Carlton, AFL have said to the blues, we know about your salray cap and have exceeded it again , so we wont do nothing if you LET COUSINS SLIP THROUGH to another club at the draft
Essendon dont think Knights can control him
this is where Richmond fit in, AFL says to richmond put Polak on rookie or LT injury list, we will give you another pick at draft time, and with Sheedy at your club he can mentor Cousins and assit Wallace and co in ensuring cosuins stays on the straight and narrow.
End result AFL do not face legal battle, cousins gets chance to play again, Carlton dosent get hit again with salary cap breaches and Richmond gets a champion player for next to nothing

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Heh. KB reckons SEN have been trying to get someone from the club to come on and talk about Ben but have got a blunt ‘no.’

Now that is about the best comment I've seen on this whole bizarre subject!

richmond, port, eseendon , carlton ,melbourne, brisbane
i think are the only clibs that have a pick.
dont see how sydney fits in also dont think the AFL will allow sydney to draft him even if they had a pick.
this all points to Ben becoming a tiger via Polak.
the clubs that are making nosies about this pies, saints ect will be told to shut up and let it happen.the only one thats really making nosie is eddie, but thats because when you loose $8million you have to deflect the attention elsewhere

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

its mickey mousetime at richmond no its still mickey mouse time at richmond.
cousins aside why is none not asking the question of why they didnt put polak on theltil before the nd draft. thomson to a lesser degree hislop and more than likely cousins throw in the fact we delisted few and used just 3 nd picks and make no mistake wallace is after immediate success.

i just wonder what hes going to do when cousins simmonds richardson johnson polak brown bowden and possibly tuck and coughlan all go over the next 1 to 3 yrs. maybe the 8 low draft picks gc 17 coming in geez the long term picture could be horrible and for whatone or two finals appearances cause make no mistake even with the latest aqusitions the list is a long way of a gf they are building nothing that is sustainable.

Um...so what happens to Deledio, cotchin, connors, collins, foley, edwards, reiwoldt, morton, hughes, white, pattison, polo, vickery, putt, post, hislop, thomson, king, thursfield, mcguane, graham, moore, JON, raines, rance,tambling......????

We have plenty of youth coming through. Hislop and Thomson are both under 22.

Taking Cousins is not going to kill the club for the future....

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

Ha ha gotta love it. talkback radio is in meltdown.... tigers are upsetting their enemies ... eddie is having a whinge.
Isn't it great?

When we were a strong powerful club we were ruthless - and hated for it. For too long we have been downtrodden and PITIED. We can't have that. Time to send shockwaves, time to provoke debate, time to roar, Richmond.

No matter what happens this is GOOD FOR FOOTBALL.

I can just hear it - round 1, 2009, the chant from the southern stand "ben-ny cousins.... is a tiger, is a tiger. ben-ny cousins.... is a tiger, is a tiger"

Nothing is going to change that scenario Claw - certainly not Cousins or his alternate if we don't take him.
Its why Miller got the chop - we are still relying on Simmo, Richo, Bowden, Johnson and to a lesser extent Brown when the chips are down to get us a win.

My suspicion is that Wallace will get three more years which is exactly the amount of time Campbell will need to season up to become the next RFC coach.

The only thing that has really changed, and for the better, is the amount we are spending on recruitment and our football department in general. It is also the reason that we pass and then pick players up in the PSD - it covers our lack of knowledge of the lesser lads to ensure that we maximise our low picks.

Can't take 29 off Vickery already, can we?

If the players genuinely support bringing Cousins to the club then it would be a great mark of respect and acknowledgement for Chris Newman, our new skipper, to offer his number 1 to Cousins whilst he dons the 17.

Listing an incentive for tram crash victim Graham Polak
Glenn McFarlane | November 16, 2008 12:00am

RICHMOND never considered asking the AFL for a special concession over Graham Polak's tram accident, because the club wanted to give him something to strive for. Coach Terry Wallace said the Tigers could have sought assistance in a manner similar to Essendon rookie listing of Adam Ramanauskas in 2006 after his second battle with cancer.

But Wallace did not think it was in Polak's best interests and wanted to give him the incentive to play again, if doctors allow him to return.

"One of the things we wanted to do first up was to leave Graham on the list," Wallace said this week. "We could have tried to get compensation from the AFL. But we thought from Graham's point of view that we wanted to keep the door open and the light shining there.

"At the end of the day, he knows his position is there and he has something to strive for." ...
