Same Carter, great gig. What a brilliant evening it was. Love how Barry Obama used "Fake Empire" as his campaign song when doing battle with Dubya.

probably the best venue in town on a feb night Nico

Caught Pokey Lafarge at Port Fairy. Was the highlight IMHO.

Playing a gig at the Corner Hotel tomorrow night.

Well worth catching if you are interested in American roots music - think southern ragtime and blues.

As a lover of every genre of music there are two big ones tonight.

Free gig Fed Square,The Cat Empire,1000th show

For metal heads, Bane Of Bedlam album launch.
If you like a taste of old school thrash with a modern in your face sound, these guys could tickle you groovy bits.

At the REV Napier St Footscray.

Support local artists!

15 bux to get in yet everyone dribbles over acts from overseas and pay 200 bux a ticket when Melbourne has World class acts on our door step.

Support the local scene and keep the pubs going before they all turn into pokie venues.

LOVE SMASHA. :hearton

WE are very lucky with the music we have in Melbourne town.

saw this band at a mates music festival in chum creek.

TGW

Your post got me looking at the acts for the BBBF.

WOW. Awesome (and varied) line up this year. Morcheeba, KC & The Sunshine Band, The Wailers, Joss Stone, Elvis (Costello), Buddy Guy, Charlei Musselwhite - what an eclectic mix.

Some great local talent too. Clairy Brown and the Banging Rackettes are well worth catching. So is Public Opinion Afro Orchestra (particularly if you like the 1970's Afro Funk sound of Fela - which I do). Fela's son is also playing (Seun Kuti). But I am not familiar with his work.

Gee I'm jealous. Wish I could get a leave pass from family duties.

BTW. Didn't see Pokey Lefarge on the list. :(

saw fela kutis boy and grandson play a couple of years ago at blues fest. took about a week for mine and mrs gw's backs to loosen up we boogied so hard.

we arent big on crowds, or john butler, so we usually go for a day on day 5 when everyone but the artists and us are over it. gives us room to move.

we like the sound of afro orchestra mucho :afro

I'll share my favourite blues fest story with you.

It was about No.3 (maybe 1996 or somethin'?) and we went and saw Taj Mahal. he was about 60, but looked about 25 with his shirt off. He had a full big band set up on stage. brass section, keys, percussions, strings. But, he came out on his own. He proceeded to move between instruments. played a big band show, solo.

Anyway, the crowd went apesh!t. never really seen anything like it. Easter is harvest time in these hills and when Taj finished the gig, someone up the front threw big, fresh, heads. Just cast them up on stage like they were rose petals. Picked that mornin'. You could smell 'em. Maybe 2-3 OZ.

Anyway, I thought thats cool, but I bet Taj is too cool to come out and sweep 'em up. He wasnt. He came back out with a giant grin, saying "thank you VERY much ladies and gentleman, I love Byrn Bay .. yeesirreee", swept them all up quite meticulously and then blew us all out with about 5 more tunes.

sends shivers down my spine retelling it.

;D Perhaps that's why they now get such a great line up for the festival - payment in kind.

Cool story.

Haven't been up to Byron for a while ... but now have to make sure I get up there for the festival sooner rather than later.

On Fela - I wish I had seen him before he died. Would have been an amazing gig. He knew how to play a crowd and would have got everyone dancing like crazy. Not sure he ever got to Australia though?

Check out public opinion afro orchestra here:

http://www.hopestreetrecordings.com/artists/the-public-opinion-afro-orchestra/

You can clearly see how they owe a huge debt to Fela.

Clairy Browne is great as well:

Lots of boogying ahead.

Palace Theatre closing it's doors 31st May to make way for apartments.

Chinese owned and they want to close it down to Demetriou the area.

:thumbdown

Saw Janes Addiction in there in the early 90's.

Fear Factory,The Dandy Warhols.

A mate's band Grunt played there on a late Saturday Night.

Richo used to go on a few nights.

Another Melbourne institution bites the dust. :'(

Just heard smasha. Sad to hear. Memories of watching some Aussie bands over there during the mid/late 80s.

My Favourite Blues Fest Story:
Probably same year TGW - at Red Devil in Crossroads watching Toots and the Maytalls. It was late afternoon and Toots had everyone in the tent dancing along with about 20 people from the crowd up on stage. For a change it was dry at Easter in Byron and the dancing created a dust storm in the tent but it didn't deter anyone from stopping. I remember leaving after he had finished seeing everyone covered in dust and sweat, people coughing and spluttering, and looking back into the tent and watching the dust settle.
That's what Kingston ska and rock steady is all about. Loved it since.

Saw those...and Queens of the Stone Age, My Bloody Valentine, Slash, Korn, Pennywise amongst others...and Helmet, probably the loudest band ive ever seen (apart from Motorohead that is)

...and used to see Grunt on the occasional saturday. I think Andrew Grant, Tim Henwood and Cam McGlinchy all played in that band.

What a shame to see that place go.....

Saw the Hunnas at the Palais last night. They, as always, were great but it was a little bit of a let down seeing them in such a large, seated venue ( and not being able to have a beer as you watch!)

Hunnas are a pub band. Understand they're trying to play to as many people in as a few gigs as possible but I'd prefer to see them in the pub.

Went to a fantastic "Concert of Tom Waits' Songs" by Stewart D'Arrietta, last night at the Victorian Arts Centre.

Not only did D'Arrietta perform well but he was excellently accompanied by Ross Hannaford, Phillip Rex & Danny Fischer.

Here is a youtube of a previous "Concert of Tom Waits' Songs" by D'Arrietta at the 2012 Montreal Jazz Festival.

Saw the Stones last night, and was lucky enough to be in the Tongue Pit just metres from the stage.

Just awesome!
