Been to a good gig lately/Concerts [Merged]

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Not sure if this is in the right thread but I don't see the need to start a new thread.

The bass player of Magic Dirt has died aged 37.

Dean Turner, who has battled lung cancer for quiet some time now, died peacefully late on Friday the 21st. Dean was also my much loved uncle, who will be missed dearly by his family, including two young daughters and his wife Linda.

Magic Dirt were due to play at the Corner Hotel last night but the show was cancelled/postponed.

R.I.P

Sorry to hear that Tannerz. Condolences on your loss and sympathy to all your and his family. Much too young.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

RIP, sorry to hear that tannerz they were a fantastic live band. I can remember first seeing them live in one of their first Melbourne gigs supporting Sonic Youth in the early 90s.

Thank you all for the kind words.

A tribute show is currently streaming until 4pm on http://www.979fm.net/ and also on 97.9fm. The show is including interviews and music including old and new stuff.

Sorry about your loss Tanners. Its very sad news.

I have many fond memories of checking out Magic Dirt at the Barwon Club. A great rock band at what was once a great venue.

Just heard about this today. Tragic news.

I have plenty of fond memories of Magic Dirt from the early to mid 90's.

Last saw them a couple of years ago at the Tote.

I'm sorry for your loss TT.

Saw a dvd of Muse live the other night . I like this band and am looking forward to seeing them live. Ive heard they are a top live act and certainly looked a ripping live show on dvd.

Wanted to catch em last time they were out but couldnt.

Real bands dont have great disparities in their music when they perform live and Muse certainly fit this .

went to hamer hall last month to see "The White Album"--Tim Rogers, Phil Jamieson, Chris Cheney and Josh Pyke and 16 piece band. Absolutely brilliant!! Was a bit sceptical going along--I spent a year of my life digesting this album--and did not think they would pull it off---but they did---so well if they had been in town the next night I would have gone again

I went too Gordie, though some thought it pointless I also thought it was fantastic. Chris Cheney the highlight for mine though they did give him all the "rockier" songs.

INteresting cross section in the crowd too.

One of the great nights, last night.

My daughter shouted me to the Simon & Garfunkel concert.

It was brilliant. Tears ran down my cheeks with every song.

They started with some of the their early tunes, combined with stories of how they came together as primary school friends. We tripped down songs like Homeward Bound, Hazy Shade Of Winter, Scarborough Fair, Mrs Robinson, I Am A Rock and others.

Garfunkel, then, did a short solo spell of his favourites including the song from Watership Down.
This was followed by Paul Simon running through his major hits of his solo career, Diamonds On The Souls Of Her Shoes and more.

Finally, they ran through some of their greatest hits, Bridge Over Toubled water, The Boxer, Cecilia, which brought everyone to their feet & dancing.

It was like an enormous wave of subdued emotion came out of me.

Magic!

Good for you Phantom! Regret not splashing out on a ticket. Their live album at Central Park is a timeless classic. Remember when they played at Waverley Park about 25 years ago...missed that as well....d'oh

Talked me into it tbart!!
Speaking of good gigs--saw Paul Dillon and his band the Tillerman at the Atheneum last week--Cat Stevens tribute--played the whole Tea for the Tillerman album as well as most of Teaser and the Firecat--and others anthems from Cat--uncanny likeness in looks and sound---good stuff--at a good price($48 per ticket)
PS--haven't been to the Atheneum since Rocky Horror--maybe 20 years ago---haven't spent a cent on the place in that time I reckon

What's the new album like?

Good stuff Freezer. A bit more radio friendly and poppy than what you would expect from the PJ guys, i guess Eddie isn't as angry as he once was. Not a classic like early days thats for sure. A couple of ripper songs though.

Major gripe - only about 36 bloody minutes.

Yep-really "poppy"---but all good!!---you are right about the 36 minutes---which was my gripe for the "Into The Wild" soundtrack solo effort by Vedder--which I rate as one of the best albums this decade!!
