Had great seats at the Palais the other night for Paul Kelly. Really good band at the moment with Ash Naylor on lead.

I haven't seen him live for years. Does he still have the voice or was this acoustic rubbish?

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

TF, I hadnt seen him for awhile and i hadnt purchased any of his albums either. for me his early work is vastly superior to his recent stuff. So it was a great surprise and pleasure to hear him do a retrospective of his career with lots of songs from the albums Gossip, Comedy and So Much Water so close to Home.

Just about all of the songs were with the full band and Vika Bull provided excellent backing vocals. he did one or two acoustic numbers and they were ok, but it was pretty much a rock show! And he was in great voice.

Very enjoyable.

And the backing artist, Charlie Parr was first rate!

Lucky me...

Got dragged along to see Pink in Perth on Friday night. Not really my cup of tea, but not the worst thing I have ever done.

Concert was visually good, but would have been better if the short haired dancer had had a costume malfunction (very sharp she was). Must say that Pink looked alright too. Always thought she looked a bit boyish. And a cup of water (that's right, no bottles) cost $4.

Anyway, acoustics at the Burswood Dome leave a lot to be desired.

saw an Elvis impersonator
why do they always portray elvis during his fat years rather than his young rocker days?

3rd concert in Melbourne now on TF. :guitar >:D

The first concert at the Dome, sold 60,000 tickets in 10 minutes.

If you miss out you can always get them on Ebay for $250 a pop.

I've seen them twice before, always put on a good show.

It's easier to parody a man who by then had become one himself.

Recently, I have been reading Eric Clapton’s autobiography. Whilst I have never been a big fan of his music personally, the era he came from produced some of the greatest music ever. Even without his music, his story is remarkable; his recovery from cocaine and alcohol addictions (each at separate times), his love triangle with George Harrison and Patty Boyd. He gets into why so many of his bands broke up: Yardbirds – at the time a Blues purist and the Yardbirds wanted to make some money; Cream – personalities and chemicals don’t mix; Blind Faith – laziness (and drugs) on his part. I highly recommend it. Of course it has a happy ending.

Knowing that I was reading the book, my wife surprised me with some Eric Clapton tickets. Crappy early mixing was soon fixed, but it was not until a quarter way into the set that things got really grooving.

Fantastic show. The highlights for me were the Hendrix double bill and also Tough Luck Blues. I can see why in the late sixties there was the belief that Clapton was God. Personally, I will continue to worship Zoso.

July 31 - Acca Dacca at Giants Stadium!

Here was the setlist:

01. Had To Cry Today
02. Low Down
03. After Midnight
04. Sleeping In The Ground
05. Presence Of The Lord
06. Glad
07. Well Alright
08. Tough Luck Blues
09. Tell The Truth
10. Pearly Queen
11. No Face, No Name, No Number
12. Forever Man
13. Georgia On My Mind
14. Driftin' - acoustic
15. Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out
16. Layla - acoustic version
17. Can't Find My Way Home
18. Split Decision
19. Little Wing
20. Voodoo Chile
21. Cocaine
Encore:
22. Dear Mr. Fantasy

P.S. The show was at a place in Jersey called the Meadowlands. It is where the football stadium was – the concert was at the basketball arena. *smile* place, that makes Waverley Park look like an oasis. $15 for parking???

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

I'm a bit like you on Clapton. Didn't really "get" him when I was younger (which was a longggg time ago) but I do now. I saw that Cream reunion a few years ago and he was sensational. Sadly missed his run of gigs at The Royal Albert Hall recently.

Thanks for posting the set list. Looks good but I would have been frustrated by the acoustic version of Layla. Give it the works!!

I have been to the Meadowlands area. Agree - makes the old VFL Park look like the new Wembley. I guess they can charge that much for parking because how the hell else do you get there?!

What made it worse for me was that I took the wrong exit leaving the concert, and ended up taking a 15 minute detour. Lucky i have a GPS because (a) the Jersey road network is the most confusing I have driven on (even with a GPS) and (b) There are some neighbourhoods not far from the meadowlands (Newark, parts of Jersey City) that are not the safest.

On Clapton TGN, I just don't think he made an absolute killer album from start to finish. Might have to return to his work to confirm. Happy to proven wrong.

I also am not convinced Layla was intentional. He just started fooling around when the guitar tech gave him the Martin, and the crowd sort of demanded it.

461 Ocean Boulevard was pretty good but I think the point isn't about "killer albums". I think that's what I missed when I was younger. He needs to be seen more as an instrumentalist I think. (And being part of Cream is no small thing to have on your resume either.)

I've been driven through Newark. Kept the windows up the whole way.

Not really live music, but i thought this was an amusing quote by Jimmy Page:

The topic of the popularity of the Guitar Hero and Rock Band videogames also came up at the press junket.

“There have obviously been overtures made to Led Zeppelin,” Page said, “but, start with the first track on the first album, ‘Good Times, Bad Times,’ and you think of the drum part John Bonham did there. I mean, how do drummers in the world can play that, let alone dad on a Christmas morning.”

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Got tickets to see The White Album live being performed by Chris Cheney (Living End), Tim Rogers (You Am I), Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon) and Josh Pyke with a 17 piece band.

Something different at least.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

One of the great nights, last night.

My daughter shouted me to the Simon & Garfunkel concert.

It was brilliant. Tears ran down my cheeks with every song.

They started with some of the their early tunes, combined with stories of how they came together as primary school friends. We tripped down songs like Homeward Bound, Hazy Shade Of Winter, Scarborough Fair, Mrs Robinson, I Am A Rock and others.

Garfunkel, then, did a short solo spell of his favourites including the song from Watership Down.
This was followed by Paul Simon running through his major hits of his solo career, Diamonds On The Souls Of Her Shoes and more.

Finally, they ran through some of their greatest hits, Bridge Over Toubled water, The Boxer, Cecilia, which brought everyone to their feet & dancing.

It was like an enormous wave of subdued emotion came out of me.

Magic!

Took a chance an went to gig at the Nash in Geelong on the weekend.

Saw Wagons perform a couple of excellent sets in the back room.
Henry was in fine form and pumped out most of the lastest album. He is an excellent front man.

Afterwards we ventured down to the taxi rank in the middle of town. I have walked through New York at four in the morning and felt safer. You could have cut the tension in the air with a knife.

Anyway we got home safely. A good night out.

Saw Blur at Hyde Park in Central London tonight. Brilliant show and just confirmed their status as Brit Pop legends. Never thought Daman Albarn was particularly good live, but he put me right back in my place last night.

Awesome show. :clap
