Been to a good gig lately/Concerts [Merged]

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Off to catch the Meanies (the surviving members) at the Espy on Friday week. A bit of a blast from the past, but well supported by 6 Ft Hick, The S-p-a-z-zys (!) and Once Overs.

Should be wild. ;D

(s-p-a-z appears to be black banned)

If you're from Torquay Pantera you must've seen the Seaweed Gorillas at some stage?

One of the best bands ever produced by Australia IMO.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

I’m not a Rolling Stones fan, but for those that are, I was watching a clip off them the other night playing “Satisfaction” at a concert (looked like it was early 80’s). This guy runs on stage at Keith Richards and without batting an eyelid Richards takes his guitar off and takes an almighty full-blown swing at this stage jumper with the heavy end of the guitar. Lucky he missed, coz otherwise it would have killed him.

Heh heh heh. The security grab this bloke and Richards without missing a beat slips the guitar back on, chewing gum and smoking and calmly goes on as if nothing ever happened. No change of facial expression through the whole thing. Nothing. Brilliant.

Anyone know what concert and year that was ?

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Speaking of the Stones I saw them about 7 years ago in Sydney. The performance was ok but..

If a 60 year old Mick Jagger was anywhere else but on stage doing his version of the funky chicken I would have laughed my ass off even more than I was already. :rofl

I got the tickets through work for nix but couldn't believe what some of the grey set were shelling out to watch a band play hits that they wrote some 30- 40 years ago at their best.

Where we were seated tickets were upwards of $300.
Holy smokes you could buy their entire catalogue for that price!!

Tough gig if you can get it. Nostalgia sure pays. :p

We used to catch the train with Link back in the day. First pub gig I ever went to was an all-ages show featuring the Meanies, Tuck Not, Nursery Crimes (maybe?) at The Corner.

I just got clearance from the boss (missy panthera) to go next Friday. Should be good!

I am a relatively recent blow-in to Torquay, but I have seen the Seaweed Gorillas. Not bad.

I spent the majority of my adolescent years in Sunbury :-\. Plenty of good bands came out of there over the years though.

(It may have acutally been Tumbleweed at that Corner Gig)

Lol!!! That's a new one on me! Fantastic stuff! Keef is obviously from the Greg Chappell and Andrew Symonds school of crowd control.

Can't find the footage from NZ where Chappell whacks the streaker with his bat but this deserves another go.

Saw The Hives at the Metro in Sydney last week - They were brilliant.

Great songs, lots of energy and a fantastic frontman.

Yes he does "borrow" a bit from Mick [and Iggy]

Speaking of well dressed - I saw the music video for "Dancing In the Street" the other day - Geez the 80s took no prisoners in the fashion stakes. Two of the coolest dudes in music history looking like complete dorks. Also - Not sure why but they seemed to have a budget of about $15 for that video.

Yep one of the classics that one. :cutelaugh

Little wonder they both disappeared from the commercial mainstream soon after that train wreck.

See my comment above above Jagger, he's still moving the same way twenty years later. :-[

Bowie didn't.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

We went to see Leonard Cohen at Rochford Winery, my favourite venue for concerts these days, last night.

First on were Black Eyed Susans for approx 45 minutes.  They were very good in a difficult time slot.  5pm and everyone was arriving, staking their claims and setting up picnics etc.

Next was Paul Kelly and his nephew Dan Kelly for just under an hour.  Nothing needs to be said really.  Typical Paul...the man, his guitar and harmonica and his stories.  Very simple but you couldn't hear a pin drop during the performance.  He was brilliant and Dan is a real talent too.

I didn't know what to expect with Leonard.  The last live cd I'd heard of his sounded as though he was almost disinterested.  Slow and drab.  Last night's concert was his first performance in 15 years and he was simply awesome.  He was on stage for almost 3 hours..not bad going considering his age.  The warmth in his smile, and his obvious appreciation, was wonderful to experience.

I've loved Leonard's poetry, songs and voice for years.  Seeing him live increased my admiration ten fold.  A wonderful performance that I rate as highly as almost any concert I've ever been to.

75 years young and you've still got it Leonard. :clapping

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Rosy were his songs/poetry a little more upbeat than normal?

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

He was typical Leonard barty. The majority of songs were ones I knew. Maybe the new ones were a bit more upbeat. Unlike those who say Leonard's songs are something to slit your wrists to, I personally find it quite uplifting.

He did joke about the drugs that have kept him going the over the years and listed them off...prozac, retalin etc etc...then quipped he'd even dabbled in religion and philosophy but the cheerfullness kept sneaking through.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

So anyone going to the BDO? I'm going mainly to see Neil Young so will only get there mid to late afternoon.
