The Church and Byrne. Sounds good.

I went along to a concert last Sunday at the Shepherd's Bush Empire put on by Zildjian honouring Ginger Baker. Great night. Various musos (Simon Phillips from Toto, Tony Levine from Peter Gabriel's band, Jon Lord from Deep Purple etc etc) played sets over the night honouring Baker as well as Mitch Mitchell who died after he'd been asked to write something on Baker for the programme. The climax saw the man himself come out with Jack Bruce (Cream) and three great horn players to play the night out.

Two little stories. Charlie Watts came out to formally present Ginger with the award, a miniature Zildjian cymbal mounted in Perspex, to wild applause. He stood in an immaculate suit looking bashful and, despite everyone else who'd been on stage having told all sorts of stories about Baker, mumbled, paused then almost in an act of surrender simply pointed off stage and said "Ginger Baker!" No speech from Charlie then huh? Ginger on the other hand did speak but quite possibly could have been p!ssed as he was so slurry with his words I barely understood him although his subsequent playing suggests he probably wasn't.

Half way through his own set, Ginger had just finished playing a duet with Jack Bruce who was doing an old Deep South blues number on harmonica while he played a "train track" sounding brushes shuffle. He grabbed the mike and said "I'm going to take a break, I need a p!ss." and promptly walked off stage. Out came the host, Al Murray to embarrassed silence to fill with a bit of patter until Ginger wandered back on to do the next number. Classic.

last wednesday I saw Oasis, a band I find amusing. I have seen them a few times now.

I have reached the conclusion that when drunk they are a fantastic band. When sober, they're only OK.

I was rip-roaring drunk on Wednesday, ergot the show was fantastic.

A couple of Saturday's ago, went to Toff, just above Cookies in Swanston St, to see the band Vulgargrad.

Played a combination of Russian/klazma.

Music was good but disappointed overall in the over-packing of the venue and that those at the front decided to stand so that those of us sitting behind had to stand as well.

Guess I'm a bit too old for standing at performances.

Funny if I recall standing in +40degree Festival Hall in the 70s to watch the likes of Status Quo et al.
Suppose, even then, I prefered on the lawn in the Myer Music Bowl.
Reckon Dylan in 1978, supported by The Heartbreakers, was the best concert I saw at the Music Bowl.

Other venues,
Festival Hall - Neil Young 1984/5 or any of the Status Quo concerts in the 70s.
Showgrounds - Springsteen 1985.
Old Basketball Centre (pre-Lexus Centre) - Pretenders / Talking Heads, circa 1984.
Rod Laver - Stevie Winwood, circa 1990.
The whatsit in StKilda - Stranglers, circa 1984.
Kooyong - Bowie, circa 1985.

Some of the other concerts I remember at being excellent.
Peter Frampton, backed by Goanna & Cold Chisel, at the Bowl, circa 1978/9.
Ray Davies solo, Atheneum too, I think, circa 1995.
James Brown & his band, at that indoor venue at the top of Bourke Street, circa 1985.

Missed that one Phanto but would have loved to have seen it. Went there in February 1981 for AC~DC's Back in Black concert. Bon Scott had died a year earlier and I think this was about their first gig after that(at least in Australia). It was a huge night. Warm up act was The Angels. They were sensational.

Has Neil Young been here yet........ or is that next month?

Thanks mate. By some miracle that could be my Christmas present if I can talk the kids into it and there are any tickets left

I've heard that the Myer Music Bowl concert has sold out unfortunately, doesn't hurt to check though. The only other option is the Big Day Out. I've got my tics to both, I haven't been to the BDO since 97 so it should be interesting.

Not sure, hadn't seen anything.

Leonard Cohen & David Byrne (ex-Talking Heads) will both be here in January.

Cohen will presumably play his favourites.
Byrne has gone into more experimental roads since Talking Heads - film documentaries, jazz & blues, etc.

Sharon Jones and the Black Keys are both playing in Jan,

Not together, individually, although I did see them play together on the same bill one night,

Both great live.

If you have never seen Sharon Jones, she is awesome live, a female James brown.

Those Canadians know when to get out of town. Have you seen the weather there in the last week or so? Shocking!

Fleet Foxes at the Prince of Wales last Friday was a great gig. Awesome sound...4 part harmonies...respectful/appreciative crowd.....2 encores.

Great show.

Next gig: Neil Young @ the Myer Music Bowl

Saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds last night at the New palace which is the old metro,

Nick and the band were great,

Was'nt that impressed with the sound though,

I was up stairs and there was a real echo and a sound of distortion from there, but the view was great.

Perhaps the sound was better down stairs
