Been to a good gig lately/Concerts [Merged]

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Saw Gomez at the Espy 2 weeks ago. Great night, top venue, good sound & cold beers!!

BDO Report:

Got there about 3.15 after enduring some yahoo idiots on the train. Had to laugh when these guys were targeted by the cops with sniffer dogs as soon as they got off the train.

Scoped out the place then went to see TV on the Radio at 3.30. They delivered an interesting combination of sonic youthesque guitars, dub rythyms, R&B, and even a touch of afrobeat. I enjoyed them a lot but would like to have seen them lock into a groove a bit more and jam on that groove.

I then went and saw the end of Died Pretty. Apparently they had sound problems but not from what I saw, they were in excellent form.

Then up came My Morning Jacket, a band I was really looking forward to. While I enjoyed them I was mildly disappointed.

After that it was off to see the end of The Drones. They were kickass and loud, louder than My Morning Jacket despite being on a smaller stage. The end of their set was an a gloriously intense mess of guitars and feedback.

After that I made the trek to the main stages. I saw The Living End from a distance, they delivered a dynamic set which all the kiddies loved.

When they finished I squashed through the ludicrously small entry to the 'D' in front of the stages and took up position for Neil Young 3-4 people from the front. I heard The Arctic Monkeys from the other stage but couldn't see them at all. They seemed OK, delivering a typical pop/punk set, but not as good as The Living End. Then it was the main attraction, Neil young. What can I say, if anything he exceeded expectations, delivering an intense scorching set belying his age of 63. He played many of his best songs from his career like Hey Hey My My, Cortez The Killer, Cowgirl in the Sand, Rockin in the Free World and Heart of Gold. His set ended with a cover of The Beatles A Day in the Life at the end of which he ripped the strings off his guitar and was beating the pick ups with he loose strings.

Neil Young played again last night at the Myer Music Bowl to a packed appreciative audience. It was apparently 37 degrees when he started at around 9.00 and was 32 when he finished around 11.00.

My Morning Jacket were the support and were I think slightly better than their BDO appearance. They played to a sparse crowd though that was only coming in when they were on.

The setlist was:
1. Love And Only Love
2. Sea Change
3. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
4. I've Been Waiting For You
5. Spirit Road
6. Cortez The Killer
7. Cinnamon Girl
8. Mother Earth
9. The Needle And The Damage Done
10. Light A Candle
11. Four Strong Winds
12. Unknown Legend
band introductions
12. One Of These Days
13. Get Back To The Country
14. Words
15. Just Singing A Song
16. Rockin' In The Free World
--
17. A Day In The Life

Which was very different to the BDO setlist and they complemented each other very well for those who went to both. He started a bit more uncertainly than at the BDO perhaps because of the heat. I've Been Waiting For You, a song off his very first album was an early highlight. The early section climaxed with a blistering Cortez The Killer and Cinnamon Girl, both of which were probably marginally better than the BDO versions.

He did an acoustic section starting with Mother Earth which was delivered with feeling and even brought a tear to my eye. Light a Candle is a new song and IMHO ranks right up there with his best acoustic songs with a great haunting melody.

He got back to his electric guitar with Get Back to the Country which I think is off one of his 80s albums but is a great rollicking rockabilly tune. Words from the Harvest album was another highlight with Neil playing some long solos using his Grestch White Falcon guitar that I think used to belong to Roy Orbison. It ended as the BDO ended with a dynamic Rockin in the Free World and an explosive A Day in the Life which again ended with Neil ripping the strings off his guitar. Apparently he did Like a Hurricane and Down By The River during the soundcheck but didn't play them in the concert proper mores the pity but I can't really blame him because the heat was so oppressive and he played for almost 2 hours as it was.

The audience was fantastic, getting right into the music and Neil clearly fed off the energy.

Thanks for the report Ian.

I heard Neil sing 4 Strong Winds (it was 10pm) when  a friend who knows the song is special to me rang so I could listen on her mobile. :hihi

Neil is one of the best rockers in the world but gee I love his acoustic stuff.  I recently bought "Sugar Mountain-Live at Canterbury House" cd and audio DVD.  Just Neil and his guitar, recorded in 1968 and released last year).  Simple as, yet hauntingly beatiful.  A very versatile fella.

Do you have Live At Massey Hall? That is a sublime live album with Neil in great form vocally. Its all acoustic as well, just him and his guitar and piano. I've also managed to download a recent UK doco on him and it came with a video of him live at the BBC acoustic from I think 1971.

Well summed up Ian.

A great show by Neil last night. For a man of his age he can still rock with the best of 'em! Cortez was huge and Rockin' in the free world went off. :yourock

I am very happy that my brother queued for tickets as the second row had a great view! It was pretty warm and the beer selection was limited to Tooheys :-X but an excellent night nonetheless.

Security were a bit funny at times....they actually asked my brother to sit down during Neil's set! That wasn't going to happen! As Ian pointed out MMJ were playing as people were coming in, so it was a bit of strange set. My brother-in-law and I went to the front of the stage - which was empty - for their final song (One Big Holiday - which absolutely rocks) and were told to sit down by an apologetic young female security guard. ::)

I've ordered it but it hasn't arrived in the mail yet. I've been drooling at the thought of the Archives collection coming out soon. Will I or won't I? A few hundred dollars is hard to justify but then again money is only money. Dunno.

For me, Neils accoustic stuff is better than his rock,

And I am probably more of a rock fan than I am accoustic ,

but when I think of Neil Young, I tend to think of his Harvest type stuff as his best work,

I saw his BDO gig, was dissapointed he did'nt play Hurricane, probably my favourite of his rock stuff.

But I enjoyed seeing him for the first time.

Interesting, I'm afraid I can't understand that. IMHO his combination of great melodies, which shine through even on his thrashiest songs, and his sheer intensity can't be beat. Plus I love his solos even though they aren't technically great, I like the way he treats solos as more of a jam. I'm more of a rock fan too and he's basically my favourite rock artist ever. I've come to appreciate his acoustic side though, Ambulance Blues is my favourite Neil Young song and its acoustic.

On The Beach and Sleeps With Angels are my 2 favourite albums of his but he's so much better live than on any of his studio albums. I'll listen to any of his live albums or the many bootlegs I've got ahead of his studio albums.

A woman justifying spending :hihi
Just get it anyway Rosy and enjoy it. Life's too short.

Saw the Stray Cats last night, at the Forum. Was absolutely awesome. I cannot believe Slim Jim still looks the same and still very skinny! LOL. Brian's guitar solos were fantastic.

And piece de resistence, my hubby snaffled one of Brian's guitar picks that he threw out to the audience!

All in all I would thoroughly recommend them if you get a chance, whether you are a big rockabilly fan or not - I think they are coming back to do one more show after going to a few other cities - and wear comfy shoes if you are in the standing room at the front!

I never understood why they moved from the Apple to the Dart.

Shane Warne the Musical. Free tickets final night.

Much better then I thought. A major urine extraction on the great blonde from Back Rock.
