i have spoken though, my humble opinion represents 99% of Australian BDO regulars.

How do you figure out your opinion represents 99% of Australian BDO regulars when the concerts sold out in record time, more a matter of minutes than of days?

Everybody I've spoken to about it, albeit that's only 10 or so, is more of the opinion of skybeau.

If you speak to people of the relevant demographic (ie the target market for BDO being young adults aged 18 to 30) then you would realise that this years BDO tickets are selling in record time because of the fact RATM are headlining. A huge majority of fans (an unbelievable amount of people) missed out on buying tickets to the RATM Festival Hall gig, which sold out in 2 or 3 minutes.....

And no, BDO didn't sell-out because of Billy Bragg et al. Sorry, but do your research and talk to some young adults (people in the know, not country fans or pop-idol fans) before trying to tell me why BDO is so fantastic this year.

Otis, they always add extra acts to the big day out after the first announcement.

I'm a BDO regular too, I'm aware of this... but the current support acts aren't "OK", they're actually terrible. RATM are the ultimate headline act, and Bjork reaches out to a totally different market which is ok if she wasn't on one of the 2 main stages, although she won't be appreciated whatsoever on the main stage. She will get booed which generally isn't fun...

Then again, I remember when Foo Fighters headlined back in '03 and Jane's Addiction was the 2nd last act to perform, everybody booed them and that was actually quite enjoyable for me to be a part of the booing.

I noticed that Crosby, Stills & Nash are playing in concert in Australia in December.

Last time I saw them in concert together was at Hammersmith stadium in London back in 1983.

I'm tempted to go but I may have to mortgage my house with the price of concert tickets nowadays.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

sorry, the target audience for BDO this year wouldn't be 18 to 30.... probably 23 to 35 (covers all the bjork and ratm fans)...

But but but but...I'm 22 ??? :'( ;D

I do agree, the sole reason BDO sold out so quick is because of RATM. It really didn't matter who else they had on the line-up...the Australian Idol final or Madga Szubanski sings opera or whatever, it was always going to sell out dead quickly. Which is a shame for any fans of music other than RATM, because it doesn't allow them to make a leisurely decision. And its going to make for a awful night, where people are going to be lining up for RATM hours in advance, the entire stage and surrounds will be packed and for an event which relies on having multiple artist appeal, it's gonna make it difficult.

Personally, I look at the first line-up and if there's 5 bands I like, I get a ticket. Last year I had 2 (and I was only interested in seeing Muse because I'd heard they were good live), so IMO last year was a terrible lineup. This year it's heaps better. And for what it's worth, RATM and Bjork were not in my list this year. I've never really been interested in the headliners anyway.

But, like you say, I'm in the definite minority.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

gold star for your post (if PRE had gold stars i'd give u one anyway).

that's fair enough... in '05 i was the minority when beastie boys performed. i love the beastie boys but i hated their set so i left early (probably because i was standing too far away). catching a train home was more important than watching their crappy live set.

You're right though... sometimes it's the 3rd, 4th or 5th artists on the bill that makes the day worthwhile though, like queens of the stone age and system of a down, who are always big drawcards.

Of the un-announced groups/artists, there has to be one bigger/better than Grinspoon. If they're 3rd on the billing then I'll start posting in the Christianity topic!

Go anyway Phants.......we have a spare room if you run into trouble.

Can't wait for the show!

The people I've spoken to are in your demographic ranging from 20 to 25. I don't need to do research cos I'm confident your 99% claim isn't accurate. What research did you do to come up with that figure?

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

a) I am a good 30-something years younger than you and know a lot more people in this 'demographic'. You don't need to do any research, nobody is holding a gun against your head. It was merely a suggestion, before opening one's mouth it is generally wise to know what one is actually talking about. I think that as long as u keep convincing yourself that you are correct then I'm obviously wrong, yeah? ::)

b) I, along with all of my friends, work colleagues, several clients (in the music industry) and other associates (ie bdo and triple j-oriented forum members) are BDO regulars and we all have the same opinion. PRE should hardly be used as a "yardstick" for what music Australians are into. Having read this topic I have dry-reached many a time. :hihi

c) 99% is just me being nice. I really mean 100% but there are always a few derros who stuff up the mix :help

You wouldn't have a clue who I know and how many more people you know than me. Interesting you claim you're under 20 years old. Not even in the demographic you claim BDO is marketed towards.  No wonder you had to pluck figures from under a hat.  :hihi

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

No Otis. I have just turned 51, so if you're a good 30-something years younger than me you must be 20 or younger. :blah

That line up is pathetic compared to what has been on offer in previous years.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

this is a music topic, not the westpac mathematics competition, i don't give a toss if you're the same age as me to be frank. :-*

i never said i knew more people than you, i am merely telling you that i know several people directly involved with BDO... i am telling you WHY it sold out so fast (and skybeau has agreed, being the only person other than yourself to discuss BDO in here).

if you're going to be smart, please give me an in-detail reason as to why i am incorrect in saying that RATM are more or less the sole reason BDO sold out in record time. Please enlighten me ;)

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Isnt there a BDO thread somewhere?

Billy Brag, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Otis was you who made an issue of my age and you stuffed up, as well as threw in a lmao into the bargain in doing so. Throw in your 99% claim which is what I was questioning and maths obviously isn't your strong point.

Yes you did actually but you wouldn't have a clue. "I am a good 30-something years younger than you and know a lot more people in this 'demographic'"

Of course RATM featuring is a large reason for BDO to sell out so quickly and haven't said differently and certainly never claimed you were incorrect in saying that. Therefore I don't see why you are asking me for an in-detail reason.

It goes without saying they are part of the lineup and people must have been happy or they wouldn't have brought the tickets. I suspect the other acts will get a lot of support too and the example you yourself used, skybeau, said RATM and Bjork were not even in his top 5 list of the acts appearing.
