Saw the Police at Twickenham last weekend. I didn't manage to get tickets before they all sold out but a friend at work couldn't go and I was walking past just at the right time. ;D They still got it! From Summers' opening riff of Message in a Bottle to the closer, Next To You. 2 hours of just the three piece, full of energy, no additional musicians. Lots of reviews talk about them changing their songs around but I didn't notice much more than most live bands do. They played Truth Hits Everybody much slower than the recording and predictably strung Roxanne out too but not in any way that detracted from it. Song of the night for me was Synchronicity 2 although Can't Stand Losing went pretty close. The one that didn't quite work was Don't Stand So Close - the chorus sounded a bit empty without the harmonies as Copeland and Summers have their vocals low in the mix which of course is a good thing as neither can sing. Great players though. Copeland's acknowledged as a great drummer but I've always reckoned that Summers is under rated because he doesn't play the guitar hero solos.
Saw Prince last night too. The consummate entertainer. Hot band, hotter dancers - my only criticism is he did lots of covers (in his way of course) including amazingly, the Foo Fighters Best of You! His last encore came after was pushed out to the stage in a big road case well after the house lights had gone up and the band had disappeared. Half of the audience had left but it was worth sticking around for as he did one after another of his classics - just him and his sequencer/keyboards which sounded like a band in itself. Great night.
