Been to a good gig lately/Concerts [Merged]

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

I think you'll like him. Seen here jamming with Johnny Butler.

Mates of mine saw him at Blues Fest and couldn't stop talking about him.

Thursday night's Kaiser Chiefs gig was a wholee lot of fun - they played what you would expect, and they were very infectous onstage. Guitar came across harder (heavier) than the albums, probably for the best in a live set. Geez the guitarist Andrew White plays like Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath (maybe it's being left handed). Ricky Wlson crowd-surfed - too basd it was to the VIP area...

The Walkmen were the warm-up act. Personally, I'd find more warmth in a dead body.

Friday night was some Sean Lennon. Totally differnet gig. Tight musianship, mellow beat... If you liked his latest album (which I do) then guarantee you would like the show. Considering how little he tours, he ha great stage presence. Funny onstage banter between songs. Yoko is a lovely lady.

the word is that Axl re records EVERY time he gets a new band member as he is a perfectionist, and will only release the album once tour is completed and the band members are set. hence the ten years waiting, as he has been through a fair few muso's and has had to start all over again.

Agree that in fighting was the downfall of GnR. But grunge had a small part too. GnR are from an era much greater than this with Metallica, Skid Row etc . . . . which dissapeared into the distance to make way for the likes of pearl jam, nirvana etc. . . . . Everything has a cycle i guess.
oooohhh yeah those were the days. Whatever happend to big bands. It seems that the new generation of bands really don't do it as well as the boys frome the 80's and early 90's they all seem a bit BORING zzzzzz.....

You're probably just getting old mate.... Either that or you've actually been brainwashed into believing Skid Row were "listenable".

Guns N Roses are "ok" at best. A few beers in the belly and some 1st grade lyrics are written to a catchy melody... then a natural guitarist (Slash) adds a nice solo and we have a song. Axl shoud've just quit when they split though, he's a joke now.

Metallica, musically are brilliant. Unfortunately they sold out and now have lost a HUGE amount of hardcore fans that were always there for them. And if selling-out didn't cause them to lose their fans, i'm sure the anti-napster crap did. I remember when i bought "St Anger", i opened up the case and there was actually an extra CD floating inside of it. Wow Lars and James would've been FURIOUS if they found out about this haha. I guess some disgruntled Universal employee did it intentionally.

Anyway, these bands are a pathetic joke in comparison to bands/artists before them like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Black Sabbath et al. *smile* rock is a genre that should forever be forgotten IMO. The only sad thing about the death of it is that the guitar hero died with it. Grunge is very simplified, sure, but if it weren't for the grunge revolution we wouldn't have bands like Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl is a "grunge" rocker (not so much nowadays, sounds a lot purer to me since he joined FF). This guy has done more for the music industry than most others nowadays and has helped bands like Queens of the Stoneage and Eagles of Death Metal (very much a glam-sounding rock band, but not as fairy-like and ridiculous as 'The Darkness').

There are bands today (some have been around since the 90s) like System of a Down, Tool and RATM who, in my opinion, will influence just as many young up-and-coming musicians as Metallica and GnR did.

Anyway there is this saying, i dunno... something like "each to their own". I'm a stubborn man though and can't stand the whiny voice of Axl Rose, and his sh!thouse attitude towards life and his fellow man makes me sick. Thank god he hasn't let his manic depression influence his songwriting. The only good thing about GnR were the guitar solos (oh and that whistling part in the song 'patience').

Interesting post, enjoyed it. Don't agree with the G'N R view (except for the part of about Axl being a tool).

SOAD always struck me as a bunch of 40 year olds trying to play 20 year olds music.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

To find good music today you need to search for it. The music industry is too fragmented, Major Record Companies and Radio Stations too safe.. There is a lot of crap out there that you need to get through it. How much airplay does The Eagles of Death Metal get? How did you hear about them? More than likely directly related to Josh Homme.

In the '70s they were pushing Zeppelin and Hendrix on FM radio, because they weren't being played on AM. Now Student Radio in the USA and RRR (maybe JJJ and PBS?) in Melbourne is the place to find good new music, but it all depends on the time-slot and the host. It's Doof-Doof music at 20 paces after midnight for example.

exactly NYT,

word of mouth is how you usually find out about bands that aren't so mainstream. forums are always the way to go. football forums like these aren't really that great, because everybody is here to discuss footy and other than that our interests are all very vague and not in-line with one another.

and jb, frankly i was just sick of reading about GnR. Grunge killed metal/hard rock and I couldn't be happier. That's evolution, baby! People should build a bridge :D

Agree Otis. I loved Gunners back then but that was over 15 years ago. Listened to a lot of music since then and as you say evolution! Though I did catch the Airbrone clip on TV the other day and thought I was watching Countdwon circa 1978.

Didn't their comeback concert not go to well for some reason.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Saw Tower of Power at Ronnie Scott's last night. To see a 10 piece band soul/funk band with such a big horn sound in an intimate club like this was incredible. They were as tight as any band I've seen and Larry Braggs' vocals were top quality. They had the normally restrained crowd at Ronnies on their feet and dancing so if you ever get the chance to see them, take it. At least I suggest their upcoming dvd would be worth the investment.

Soho afterwards was just as busy as ever - seems the bomb threat had little impact on people getting out and about. (And as usual, some interesting sights to be seen.)

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Still very jealous that you can even go to Ronnie Scott's TGN. Always wanted to get there!

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

;D

It's actually lost a bit of it's character M33. It was taken over a year and a half ago by Sally Greene, the women who runs the Old Vic theatre and she's spent a lot of money doing it up, then increased prices (quite a lot some nights - ToP cost £75!). The old front of house staff who knew all the regulars were sacked (including the funny guy that used to take the p!ss out of my membership card photo) and she's using a security firm instead. As a result all the old musos who used to drop past and hang in the foyer can't get in anymore.

They now have two sittings/shows a night now and also tend to hire more commercial acts. Sometimes that's good - I doubt ToP would have played there before and we saw Van Morrison do a great gig there last year, but it's status as a JAZZ club has been reduced. The use of the same house band every night hasn't helped either. I used to enjoy seeing the various local support acts. Some were rubbish but some were great and I often listen to the their cds I've bought as a consequence.

She hasn't ruined it. It's still got a great little jazz club atmosphere if a little less "special" and there was definitely a need for some renovations (the toilets in the basement were third world standard and the food - well you just didn't order the food) but there has certainly been a loss of character.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Still sounds like a "must see" venue if only for the nostalgia aspect TGN. Thanks for the info mate.

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Went to great gig on Saturday night.

Though tired, I reluctantly succumbed to my wife's calling and followed her to Toff's, above Cookies in Swanston St.

We went into the Performance Room where we had the opportunity to watch 3 bands for $12, of course, plus drinks.

The first band, Plastic Palace Alice, sung original songs heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground & like bands. Very good!

The second band, Little Red, sung original songs too, heavily influenced by bands of the '60s, Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys. Excellent!

Old age took over and we left before the third band, Belles Will Ring.

What struck me is that the fashion now has completely come around and boys, I suspect of Uni age, are wearing & looking what & like I did at Uni around 1980.

Great to see that after 20-odd years I'm finally back in fashion. ;)

i work in teens fashion and i can tell you that the 80's is back with a vengeance!! I am in an environment where legwarmers, fluro trackis, footless tights, oversized tshirts with slogans and bad blue eyeshadow is all the rage.

The youth these days cant find a way to express themselves as individuals. They feel the need to rehash fashions gone by.

Dont know if would classify as a gig but did see in Vegas "Love" Cirque du Soleil based on songs from the Beatles. Never really been interested in Cirque du Soleil as thought they're televison shows were not that exciting but live was amazing. Great acrobratics, props and choreography in with the Beatles song at the time, made for an enjoyable night. If the show comes to Australia would definately recommend going and has not got me interested in another of their shows.
