Been to a good gig lately/Concerts [Merged]

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Hey, and they have this cool thing up there: Rain!!!

We should try and get some down here in the South!

Re: Been to a good gig lately? [Merged]

Glad to hear that the people who went to the RHCP’s last night enjoyed the concert. I don’t mind the RHCP’s and would like to have gone, but surprisingly several people here at work came away disappointed.

Don’t shoot the messenger here, but their view was that they were a bit self-indulgent, going on long winded jam-like sessions and solos. They also said there was a bit of acoustic material that went a bit flat and that their ending was also a bit flat ?

The fact a few of these people said that they also would have liked to have heard them play a few more of their hits tells me that their opinion is probably worth jack sh*t anyway, (and that for all intents and purposes they’re just dumbed down generalists when it comes to taste in music), but I still wouldn’t mind hearing from those who went as to what they think of some of the above.

Back to Bluesfest:

Biggest Dud: Joss Stone. Overrated and a bit silly. Can sing ok but stage manner was embarrassing.

Out of Place: Normie Rowe! WTF?? He tried to get the audience to singalong and everyone ignored him and he cracked it and said, 'Well I am running out of time anyway.'

Biggest Discovery: Eugene Hideaway Smith. A Louisiana Blues singer guitarist. Fantastic. Sort of a cross between BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Biggest Discovery 2: Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience. Probably the best live band i have seen for years. Played Cajun party music. Sang in French and English whilst sqeezing the piano accordion and flicking necklaces out into the crowd with his bare feet!! awesome.

Couldn't get near: John Bulter, Xavier Rudd, Ben Harper.

To be continued.....

Bluesfest is a great festival. Everyone should try to go at least once. 8)

The smile off back to America Award: The Imperial Crowns. Shockers

Most pervading Smell: Ganga

Best Discovery 3: Fred Eaglesmith. A Canadian singer song writer. Bill Chambers was in his band. Sort of an amusing, wry cross between Nebraska period Springsteen and Steve Earle's less serious moments. His on stage banter was a cracker!

Aussie talent:

Saw shows from some very established aussie acts. Paul Kelly put in a great show and bobbed up with Kev Carmody. They sang 'From Little Things (Big things Grow).

I hadn't seen the Waifs before and they belted thru a great set. The crowd went right off! They are pretty good but a couple of their numbers were a bit samey.

CW Stoneking!!! What can i say about this guy. I love him. He is channelling from the 1920s and he is wonderful. I took a mate to see him and all he talked about for the rest of the festival was CW. His on stage manner is unique and i will see him every chance i get. I am on the CW bandwagon!!!

Kill Devil Hills: a great Aussie band out of Freo. Have two of their CDs but nothing prepares u for their potent live performance. Sort of an aussie version of The Band, which is a high accolade.

The Just Missed a Great Set Award: Rocked in for the last 15 minutes of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Unbelievable!!! Spewin i missed the rest. Got one of their CDs to make up for the disappointment.

The Just Missed a Great Set Award 2: Floggin Molly. Played in the Mojo tent (the biggest stage) and sounded like a new Pogues!! Absolutely ripped thru some folk punk songs and then it was over. Make mental note to seek them out. Sounded Brilliant!

I had a five day ticket which cost about 330 bucks. It sounds a lot but well worth it. The thing to realise is that you can't see everyone, and that you will see some amazing stuff from the random stuff you wander into.

The event itself is massive. They had 17000 people there on Monday alone. And for such a big crowd, its amazing how calm and friendly it was.

It rained really heavily at times, but everyone was just happy. And the age range is incredible. When Bo Diddley played the audience was made up of everyone from little primary aged kids thru to people in their 70s and 80s.

It's really refreshing to see little kids and teenagers getting into great music by people like Taj Mahal. It makes you feel good, it sort of reaffirms your own ideas and thoughts about music.

Great gig Pesto, sounds awesome. :fing32

Speaking of CW, after you brought him up, I remembered hearing him do a classic version of a White Stripes song on Triple J a few weeks ago. Well worth checking out.

Any of you going to the Apollo Bay festival next weekend? Juzzie Smith and Blue King Brown would be worth it alone for me, but there's heaps more good stuff there too.

Fred has a lot of songs about vehicles. :hihi

Yes, he commented on that. He said if we didn't like that we could smile off!!

He was great. Some great songs and really funny as well.

He sang this great song about migrant workers. Wonderful.

and another called 'when did we become white trash?'

The older acts:

Saw three performances from what might be considered the older generation.

Taj Mahal Trio was fantastic. I mentioned before about him busting the piano stool. I was releived he recovered and fired up.

Taj played a wonderful set of country blues tunes. he got the audience singing and interacting and it was one of those performances that had a lot of warmth and feeling. His playing was immaculate, but with emotion and expression. His singing was great. Love him to bits!

Bo Diddley: probably the oldest guy there. Had a cracking band that gave him a 'big' sound. Played plenty of 'Bo Diddley beat' type songs. Some slow blues and some Muddy Waters type electric blues. I rated him highly and it was great to see him. He didnt play much and relied a lot on his band to jam around him, but i this case less was more. Glad to see him. May be the last chance.

Eric Burdon (and the Animals): he was pretty good, but it was a little bit caberet. Sang the hits like 'dont let me be misunderstood' and 'we gotta get out of this place' and 'house of the rising sun'

I thought the band was great and his singing was pretty strong, but like Diddley it was a bit of a caberet thing. Nevermind, the set was strong and the crowd got into it.
