Basketball

What were the Slovenia defenders doing while Lithuania were clogging the lanes for then?
Been calling Slovenia, Lithuania all day. Driving my daughter nuts too.

But, you know who I was meaning so.....

Great summary. I thought Goorg's rotations were terrible. It's the first time ever we've lacked shooters. Needed Goulding to play more, need to get DJ Vasiljevic in the squad. Both Patty and Joe looked slow and unsure of themselves. Thought we needed to pick up the pace last night and try and run and gun. White and Daniels to pick up the defensive intensity and throw Goulding out there and tell him to get us 10 in 4 minutes.
Totally agree on Patty and Joe; Joe didn't want to take any shots, why not? Patty did well and moving well, but it didn't result in much of a + for the team.

Cooks had been great on defence, and good on offence, but hardly played.

Could have gone with White, Reath and Cooks down low, with GiddyUp/ Goulding and Green/ Thybule/ Daniels up top. Instead, Goorg insisted on sticking with Mills, Kay and Ingles. For someone who has been a great coach for so long, I really think it is time for him to move aside, ideally for a top coach from Europe. Then again, what is Hardwick up to these days???

Give Exum Patties minutes, give him a green light to create and shoot it and you’ll get a similar points yield with less effort and much better defensive coverage. He was wasted in this campaign. And don’t start me on Ingles.

Yeah, I thought Exum was great! That block and then dunk at the other end, that is what we needed more of!

Our squad was shizen, not a surprise we didnt go further, Goorjian is a spud and has to go...comical coaching moves.
Our vets should've come off the beach as the 2nd unit, Mills is 35 years old he ain't the player he was obviously.

Don't get me started on Simmons never wants to rep his country always has excuses, always bails when the time comes.
Now a few days ago saying he wants to playing in the Olympics lol.
He's been salty even since he didn't make the 2014 world cup squad.

It *smile* me to tears to hear Ingles and Goorg lobbying for their trips to Paris next year - saying things like they can see the team coming together with a few changes and how excited they are to be part of it. I think this whole campaign needs to be examined from scratch - and anyone thinking that they’re exempt from that can go to buggery.

When you add in how poorly the female teams have performed this year, as well, things aren't rosy for Basketball Australia and Co.

Speaking to someone who knows, they reckon that covid gave basketball, especially girls, a huge kick in the guts across Australia, but especially in Victoria. They reckon Vic players are at least 12 months behind the same cohort in other states due to the severity of lockdowns.

Another person I was having a chat to yesterday, who is also in the know, gave pretty much the whole FIBA leadup and tournament a fair kicking, with a focus on the selections and coaching moves. Was interesting to hear.

Joe should not have been picked for this event and I'm staggered he is lobbying for Paris. Was a complete passenger this series.

Not sure on BG. But we need some changes.

From what I heard Caporn was responsible for the offence and Nielsen basically for subs. Both areas of concern in this campaign. Goorg looked after the defensive side of things. May not be that simple MD - but the coaching staff definitely need to be looked at.

We need to find the shooters. But the key to unlocking everyone is Simmons. Simmons can play 4 or 5 defensively at the Olympics and then push the ball and open up the floor for everyone. We get him and everyone looks better. And I think we lack a true point guard besides Giddey. Patty is a scorer. I'm hopeful Tyrese Proctor has a big season at Duke and is a wild card. And I think Mitch Creek or Luke Travers is close to replacing Ingless. And still need to get DJV into the team, we need gunners. No point Goulding going to the Dance and sitting on the bench for the entire time.

Simmons, Giddey, Landale are the key cogs. Exum, Green, Daniels and Cooks will all make it.

And don't count out Rocco Zikarsky, could have a huge NBL season and show himself to be true big who can run the floor.

A caller on the radio the other day said Gene Simmons is more likely to play basketball for Australia than Ben Simmons.

Ben has said he wants to, and would certainly offer A LOT more than, for example, Ingles (looks past it), Goulding (played 12 seconds of game time).

He would, but he’s said that before, too. Something always ‘seems’ to come up when push comes to shove, though.

Can’t have the situation where your leading scorer for the tournament is a 20 year point guard whose best attribute is his passing! That alone tells you the makeup of the team is wrong. Much as I love Giddey - he shouldn’t be our best offensive option. And I’m not sure of his fit with Simmons. I’d be real cautious about trying to get them both in the squad. Having said that - Simmons would add so much to our transition game capitalising on our athletic strengths. And shore up a weakness in our big man rebounding abilities. But he couldn’t share the floor with Giddey.
Would love to go the youth path and bring in Proctor and big Rocco. The sooner we can establish a core for the future comprised of the greatest talent ever assembled in a Boomers singlet the better.

I'm not sure why you think Simmons and Giddy might have issues playing together, couldn't be any worse than the way the team didn't gel at all in the worlds. Simmons is def a talent who can play 1 through 4, or the 5 in small ball defence. IMO nothing to not like.

As far as where he may fit on the team, here's an easy solution... Swap Simmons in for Kay.

Yeah - big upgrade in talent that one. Not against Simmons being in the squad in principle - but sharing the court with Giddey would be problematic - they both have similar offensive strengths and deficiencies. And there is a question mark over the cultural fit with Simmons - but that is only speculation at this stage. Another upgrade to the PF position would be Bolden - if he could get his form back.

Used to follow the Spectres, and then Magic, so a big fan of Bolden! :D

Bruce is still balling, but is up in SW Sydney, working with those who need the outlet more than most. Top guy!

Maybe we try Jonah before reaching out to Bruce. Much as I loved his battles with Dave Simmons in the day - he might just be a tad off his peak. 😀

Another matter is this idea that we’re in the throes of change – not just to a new generation of player but to a new “switchy’ style of play. Meaning that defensively, at least, we play a type of positionless style of game. With the ability to switch off opponents when defending top of the key screen and rolls, pop-outs and low post pin – downs.

If that is the case – why did we take Kay and Reath at all? Sure, a defence employing those guys can stall the offensive motion by utilising jump switches, blitzes and drop backs when the initial triple threat is neutralised – but that’s old school – it’s not really employing a switchy defence at all. And you can’t half do it. It only works when everyone is capable of switching all the time.

To truly benefit from this style we would have been better taking Maker or Pinder – centres with genuine foot speed and juice. And possibly even Froling – who has shown a very good transition / open court game in the international lead-up games he played for the Boomers. In fact – he was the only big really running the floor. Switchy defence requires great speed and skill in transitioning to offense to make it really pay off.

I can’t help feeling that the intention was right but that the selection of personnel was off the mark. It relegated the employment of the switchy defense to the second string team only – where Cooks and to a lesser extent White could be used to any effect.

In short, we didn’t really carry that idea through to the point where our identity as a team and style of play evolved to truly create something new. We were a bit of this and a bit of that – and no amount of warm-up games or time playing together was going to fix it. We need to choose the right team to employ this style of play and go from there.
