Bachar Houli - بشار حولي,

I've done a lotta thinking bout our strucure and who to have trade. And only tonight did I get the dispensible in order in my own mind, and yeah, this could be the very time I was wrong.

So - Maric, Vickery (useless ruck div), Shane (Party tricks) Edwards, Grigg(s). Must be on the table.

But no Houli. Never Houli. I love the bloke.

Eh. GWS? Our man is a brilliant citizen. Greater. Western. Sydney. Massive market appeal to the locals. Bachar Houli is Kevin Sheedy's dream. His background is Lebanese; he is cultivated.

Want Houli? Oh, yeah. And Houli is a man who wants to succeed. A natural leader. Got the culture, the social skills, yeah.

Vlad would pay him $1M in rort bucks. A year. GWS would tout pick #1 or Adam Thingy coz Vlad would pay. (Thank Gawd for paying Daddy.)

But we hate Vlad. And we love the way we roll. *smile* em all. And when Houli goes ok, and then improves that's about the game.

Feel the temptation before you know that Bachar Houli is Richmond man. And a gentleman.

Strategy, tactics, the way we live. What matters?

Problem is that Houli as a Muslim (you didn't use the word but let's face it that's what his 'appeal' is) would be a polarising character in West Sydney. Do a word association in West Sydney using the word Islam among non-Muslims and invariably you get such responses as illegal boat people, intolerance, sharia law, welfare dependency, terrorism, rape gangs and so on. Whether these are fair responses or not are largely irrelevant, potentially for every 1 person you might attract in theory you could lose 4 or 5.

Again this not talking about him as a player or if he kept his religion private, rather this is if it's used as a marketing tool. Personally I'd trade him in a heartbeat as part of a package for pick one, their pick 9 or for Taylor Adams etc but I doubt it will happen.

There are many things we may not agree on, Tygrys, but I'm talking about a very old-fashioned value; 'm talking about some kind of loyalty.

Be he Lebanese, Skippy, Syrian, Aborigine, Muslim, Koori (et al) or Christian, I don't care. If somebody wants him just for being that I say - let's keep him. Another kind of loyalty, which some might find red-neck. But, others might trade him.

it's a big world.

For mine, Bachar is an absolute inspiration, and exactly the type of character we need at the club. We hear of his leadership as a teammate (doubling back after finishing the tan to help the back markers etc), but the way that he conducts himself as a human being is nothing short of exemplary. Which of his teammates is not challenged when they see him play during Ramadan? Who is not encouraged to speak up and become a leader? We spent many years at our club bemoaning a culture of players without leaders. Now leadership feasts on itself. Bachar is among the best. It more than makes up for the odd fumble.

Bachar is a fine young man & a fine young footballer & to blame any individuals for our final loss is wrong.
Whatever happened to win as a team lose as a team!

Bachar is improving & always striving to better himself & the club. Pretty sure there is a fairly sizable muslim population in Melbourne as well!
Plenty of new tigers due to Bachar's influence I would have thought.

Key player going forward fore mine.

He has improved out of sight in the time he has been with the club and this last season has seen his improvements in eradicating a couple of his deficiencies. He is now a top rebounding defender, a real leader in the club and in his community so we should cherish him as the valuable Tiger he is

His community efforts and leadership are one of the many reasons why I love this footy club.
Yep. Sometimes certain people are worth far more than just their footballing ability. Bachar's one of the last I'd place on the table.

If you want leadership, Jacko provides all that Bachar does and more but that doesn't stop a plethora of posters calling to trade him over the last couple of years.

I guess the errant elbows and headbutts were an added extra.

There is more to leadership than just on the field.
Bachar is a leader in the community, not just the muslim community although that is his major focus.

People like Bachar & Jacko are such fine ambassadors for the RFC>

Richmond Football Club's primary focus is winning premierships, community leadership is just a minor bonus. If we had to trade both Jacko and Bachar to gain players that will take us to that premiership then so be it.

Oh, I also believe Bachar & Jacko are fine players who can help us to a flag> :)

Community leadership is more than a minor bonus. People are more likely to support RFC because of our commitment to all parts of the community. We didn't get 60K+ members this year just because we won a few games. I grant you that is a very big reason but many joined because they saw a club that cares for all walks of life.

Where were those supporters 3 years ago when we were a good community club UK? No I believe that most of our supporters would rather win a premiership than a community award.

Not sure anyone is arguing that! More that it's fantastic that we are becoming a complete club, on & off the field.

Fair comment. We should still be a family club with strong community links as well as becoming premiers

Personally I couldn't give a damn about any community awards. I can't remember the last time I ribbed someone at work because we had someone at our club that is working with some minority etc and they didn't. As long as we don't have players doing Fevola's or Milne's etc it's all pretty much a sideshow. I suspect the 70,000 tigers that turned up to the elimination final did so because they want to see Richmond win games and premierships, and not because they want the Tigers to win the Ms Congeniality Award among football clubs. But to each their own I guess.
